
TCS ranks 45th among top-100 global brands
TCS now ranks 45th globally, in a list that includes the world's most prominent brands across industry sectors. This year's growth marks a sharp acceleration in brand equity, favourability and awareness. In a separate independent brand audit carried out by Momentum-ITSMA, TCS demonstrated 95 per cent aided brand awareness with business executives across 26 countries worldwide, up exponentially from 29 per cent which the same audit polled in 2010.
This growth in brand value and equity highlights TCS' sustained brand building efforts, including high-impact global sports partnerships, customer-centric innovation, and consistent marketing excellence. Martin Guerrieria, head, Kantar BrandZ, said: 'By drawing on the depth of BrandZ's database over the last quarter of a century, our insights show that with the right level of investment and strategic focus, brands have huge potential to drive growth for their owners. TCS' performance this year demonstrates its ability to innovate at scale with AI capabilities now running through its portfolios.

(File) TCS market cap: Amidst the backdrop of the controversy surrounding its decision to cut more than 12,000 jobs in the current fiscal year, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services exporter, has witnessed a rout of its market cap, which slumped from Rs 16.57 lakh crore to Rs 10.93 lakh crore, a decrease of Rs 5.66 lakh crore. According to market analysts, TCS, the flagship company of the Tata Group, is going through it worst crisis since the 2008 recession, when it shares had fallen by 55 percent. TCS share prices have dipped 25 percent in 2025, and experts predict the current financial could be the worst in company's history if the downfall continues. Why TCS shares are falling? According to analysts, India's stock market has witnessed a turmoil over the past few months as foreign investors are withdrawing from the market in droves amid US President Donald Trump unleashing tariff war against India, and recently announcing 50% import duty on Indian exports. The IT industry, once considered a favorite for FIIs, is now witnessing a decline, with foreign investors reducing their stake in TCS from 12.35% in June 2024 to 11.48% in June 2025, which has resulted in the company's shares falling by over 25 percent in the current financial year. The Nifty IT index has fallen 25% so far this year, making it the worst-performing sector in the market as over half of the Rs 95,600 crore withdrawn from India by FIIs till July 2025 has come from IT stocks alone. Why mutual funds investment increased? Meanwhile, domestic mutual funds have raised their stake in TCS from 4.25% to 5.13%, making fresh purchases worth Rs 400 crore in the company, according to data. TCS' trailing PE declined from 41x to 20x, five-year CAGR stands at 8.5%, while stock CAGR is 6%, the data showed. Notably, India's IT sector has grown at a compounded annual rate of 12.5% over the last two decades, but has underperformed the Nifty over the last three to five years. TCS layoffs According to recent media reports, TCS is mulling to cut about 2 percent of its global workforce, which would result in over 12,000 TCS workers losing their jobs in the current financial year. The company's decision is being investigated, with Jefferies warning that TCS layoffs could result in a slowdown in execution in the near term and an increase in the workforce in the long term.

Transformer by Mint: The man shaping India's AI dreams, and continuing chaos at Vodafone
I've known Abhishek Singh, a senior bureaucrat, for some time now. He's been in the Indian tech ecosystem for a while, leading multiple government-backed digitisation initiatives. Now, as chief of the billion-dollar India AI Mission, he faces one of his biggest challenges in a public-service career spanning three decades. The reasons for this are varied. For one, the fact that AI presents a huge opportunity to a long-serving government official shows just how far the technology has come, and how it now affects everyone. More importantly, though, India could potentially gain or lose a lot depending on what we do with AI. Let me take you back a few decades. If you've read the venerable Chip War by Chris Miller (whom I had the pleasure to meet this January), you know that during America's push for leadership in electronic machines at the start of the world's tryst with semiconductors, India missed the bus. This allowed Japan and Taiwan to become global technology leaders despite being societies steeped in tradition. Then came the mobile revolution, and apart from emerging as a big global market, India almost missed the bus there, too. But then the Digital India and Make in India initiatives emerged, digital skills took centre stage, and India is now at a point where tech manufacturing is at least on the ascendancy. To cut a long story short, after having missed out on tectonic global shifts, India a chance to show with AI that it is not just the world's tech back-office and can lead from the front, too. Singh has a plan for this: building a voice-based foundational model that, along with India's government-supported base of thousands of Nvidia GPUs, would become India's next big export to the world after UPI. Here's why he thinks this will work. Speaking of tech's back offices… Jas Bardia, our resident correspondent for India's nearly $300-billion IT services industry, reported last week that there's a war brewing at India's mid-sized tech services firms, which truly believe they can take on the behemoths and win. India's IT services industry had began booming in the early 1990s, turning Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and the likes into the mammoths they are today. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, almost every household around where I grew up had at least one person working at these IT giants. The world, however, as changed considerably since then. Over the past two years companies such as Coforge and Persistent Services have emerged as serious competitors, pitching themselves as specialised firms with a deeper understanding of technology. Where does this leave TCS and its ilk? Will they lose out? Maybe not so soon, but market dynamics are undeniably changing. Also changing is the top job at Vodafone-Idea The beleaguered telecom operator began its India journey as Command Telecom, a telco operated under Kolkata's Usha Martin. In 2000, Hutchison Max acquired Command, leading to the creation of network provider Hutch in 2005. In 2007, Vodafone entered the market and created Vodafone Essar Limited, the entity's longest-standing identity so far. Despite its more than three decades of history, the Vodafone-Idea entity of today is in perilous financial health. Last week the telco appointed erstwhile chief operating officer Abhijit Kishore as CEO for three years as outgoing chief Akshay Moondra's term ended. Now, being a CEO is a dream for anyone in corporate India, but Vi faces a veritable nightmare. After all, it needs to catch up with Airtel and Jio on quality of service while paying off its eye-watering dues and needing $30 billion of capital immediately. Suddenly, Kishore's job doesn't seem like a dream. One thing's clear, though – whichever way this goes, Vodafone-Idea's story will make for a fascinating case study in India's telecom sector for years to come. Rs 5.6 lakh crore shock! Tata crown jewel hits worst patch since 2008 crisis. Time to panic or buy the fear?

The crown jewel of the Tata Group has shed nearly ₹5.66 lakh crore in market value, tumbling 34% from its peak of ₹4,585.90, making 2025 its worst year since that fateful 55% crash 17 years ago. The stock is down 26% in 2025 alone, slashing its market capitalization to ₹10.93 lakh crore from a peak of ₹16.59 lakh rout comes amid a weak demand outlook, the disruptive impact of generative AI and a mixed Q1 scorecard, all of which have triggered a foreign investor exodus. FIIs, who once considered Indian IT their favorite trade, have slashed holdings in TCS from 12.35% in June 2024 to 11.48% in June 2025. Their broader selling has inflicted even deeper pain across the sector with the Nifty IT index plunging 25% so far this year, making it the worst-performing pocket of the market. Out of ₹95,600 crore pulled by FIIs from India in 2025 through July, more than half came from IT stocks funds, however, have played contrarian. Domestic institutions raised their TCS stake from 4.25% to 5.13% in one year and July data showed ₹400 crore of fresh MF meanwhile, have been reset sharply. TCS's trailing PE has halved from 41x to 20x with five-year profit CAGR at 8.5% and stock CAGR at 6%. Long-term data show IT has compounded 12.5% annually over two decades yet underperformed the Nifty in the past three to five funds see opportunity in the rubble. 'With IT's weight in the Nifty near decade lows and leading firms still generating ROICs above 40%, the sector may offer relative outperformance if valuations fall further,' DSP Mutual Fund said, calling IT, banks and other large caps a defensive bucket to ride out Read | FII selling crosses Rs 50,000 crore in IT stocks in 2025. Is tech dead money or just misunderstood? BNP Paribas pointed to dividends as an anchor. TCS's yield is now 3.7% versus its five-year average of 2.9% with the last five-year peak at 3.6%, the brokerage firm said, adding that margin expansion should resume post-FY26 once the BSNL deal ramps down. BNP has an Outperform rating with a ₹4,400 target price arguing that 'resilient fundamentals and attractive valuation make TCS our top pick in the current uncertain macroeconomic environment.'Still, the headlines are not all comforting. TCS's decision to cut 2% of its workforce has drawn scrutiny. 'TCS's move to cut staff may lead to execution slippages in the near term and higher attrition in the longer run. It reflects a weak demand environment,' Jefferies warned, adding that firms unable to capture AI-led productivity gains may have to resort to layoffs. The brokerage remains selective on IT, preferring Infosys and HCL Tech, which it sees as a stronger alternative to TCS.
