
Mobile operators pull the plug on Metro 3 network
Mumbai: In a move that left thousands of commuters incommunicado,
Vodafone Idea
(Vi) and
Airtel
has abruptly suspended mobile services on Mumbai Metro Line 3, including the newly launched Phase 2A (BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk) and the operational Phase I (Aarey/JVLR to BKC).
The disruption began on May 13 without prior notice, despite Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (
MMRCL
) setting up the required underground infrastructure. Reliance Jio continues to offer limited connectivity — but only at SEEPZ station, where it installed active equipment. For the underground network, MMRCL had adopted a shared In-Building Solution (IBS) model by which a single vendor installs and manages common infrastructure to be used by all operators.
ACES was appointed neutral host through a bidding process in March 2024 and installed systems at all 16 operational stations.
However, telecom companies refused to join the unified network, citing unviable rates. They offered to provide free connectivity using their own infrastructure until commercial terms were finalised — a proposal not acceptable to MMRCL.
Vi was the first to go live when Phase I launched in October 2024 and later extended coverage to Phase 2A, opened on May 10, 2025.

Airtel supported Phase I but did not commission its network on the new stretch. With both providers now offline, commuters face a blackout underground that affects calls, internet access, and UPI payments.
"There's no technical constraint. ACES installed all necessary infrastructure. We've issued notices to the telecom companies and are seeking explanations," said a senior MMRCL official. MMRCL has taken up the issue with the department of telecommunications.
"This is unacceptable and clearly amounts to cartelisation. Telecom operators cannot abruptly suspend services without warning. There are avenues to resolve such disputes — through dialogue, regulatory intervention, or even legal recourse. This act is akin to a strike by govt employees providing essential services. Such conduct is unbecoming of corporates, who are expected to act with greater responsibility," said Shirish Deshpande of Mumbai Grahak Panchayat.
Meanwhile, MMRCL has enabled free Wi-Fi access at concourse level for ticket booking via the MetroConnect3 mobile app, Ticket Vending Machines, Ticket Office Machines, and Unified Payments Interface.

India calls for dedicated global funding mechanism for tackling disaster risks
New Delhi: India has called for a dedicated international mechanism to support the establishment and strengthening of financing systems to help nations mitigate disaster risks. Speaking at the Ministerial Roundtable on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Financing at Geneva on 4 June, P.K. Mishra, principal secretary to prime minister Narendra Modi, called for the creation of a global facility, backed by the UN system and multilateral financial institutions, to provide catalytic funding, technical assistance, and a platform for knowledge exchange, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office on Friday. The roundtable was convened by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) He echoed India's longstanding complaint of the absence of global financing for addressing climate risks. On 29 May, in an address to students of Delhi University, finanace minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that even as countries like India have committed to a greener future, they are having to find their own resources in the absence of global funding, as reported by Mint. She had added that India is continuously working with multilateral institutions to make sure they have enough leverage with their funds to finance the common cause of climate action. Speaking on India's approach to disaster risk reduction, Mishra said that the country's financing system was built on four key principles. This includes dedicated financial windows for preparedness, mitigation, relief, and recovery. Second, prioritization of the needs of affected people and vulnerable communities. The third is accessibility of financial resources across all government levels—central, state, and local. Fourth, accountability, transparency, and measurable outcomes guiding all expenditures. Emphasizing on the importance of predetermined, rules-based allocations flowing from national to state and district levels, Mishra added that the Disaster Management Act of 2005 ensured that disaster financing in the country is structured and predictable rather than reactive. Mishra stressed that disaster risk financing must be nationally owned and driven, complemented by international cooperation. The G20 presidency drove efforts to reduce disaster risks by setting up the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group in the 18th meeting of the G20, hosted by India on 9 and 10 September, 2023. In the G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, the G20 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the UN's Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), which aims to reduce disaster risks and losses globally. To achieve this, they agreed to support building up capabilities of all countries, especially lesser developed countries to strengthen climate resilience of infrastructure systems.

The country has an unmatched human capital scale with a median age of 28. It produces 1.4 million IT graduates annually. India's digital infrastructure holds a massive advantage for expedited AI penetration; add to this a young population, 1.4 million IT graduates annually, and pioneering platforms like Aadhaar and UPI (Unified Payments Interface), and you have an ecosystem well-suited for rapid AI penetration across sectors. Live Events ET: Given the potential impact of AI on the job market, what steps can India take to address this issue? SC: AI is an inherently transformative technology. As AI models get more refined, they can automate more routine tasks, and that will impact certain jobs. Research suggests that over 40% of working hours could be automated by 2030, potentially affecting millions of jobs. But this isn't just about job losses; it's about job transformation. The key is how we respond. Such huge disruption will also create new jobs that will require specialised skills to develop and manage AI. India currently accounts for just 9.2% of global AI research publications, far behind China's 23.2% and the US's 15.2%. The penetration of AI also varies across different sectors. How can India ensure inclusive AI development and global competitiveness compared to nations like the US and China? SC: To make AI equitable, we need to narrow the existing digital divide in India. The focus should be on building digital infrastructure in rural areas and tier-II and tier-III cities. Affordable internet and localised AI solutions tailored for smaller businesses in these regions are key. We also need to boost research and innovation through academic partnerships and incentivise industries to explore AI. India has just 6 supercomputers in the global top 500, compared to 63 in China and 173 in the US. This highlights the shortfall in digital infrastructure. If we can tackle these issues head-on, India can compete with global AI leaders like the US and China. ET: Which sectors are poised to gain the most from the AI boom in India? SC: AI has the potential to touch every part of our economy, but some sectors are poised for major transformation. Healthcare is a big one. Think about AI helping doctors diagnose diseases earlier and more accurately. Agriculture can be revolutionised with precision farming techniques. Education can become much more personalised. And financial services can reach more people and prevent fraud. These are just a few examples. Now, will every job in these sectors be replaced? Not really. But many jobs, especially for clerical and administrative workers, are expected to become extinct. The smart move is to focus on how AI can augment human capabilities, not just replace them. ET: Despite the government's support, what are the key roadblocks that could slow AI adoption in India ? SC: In AI adoption, complacency and rigidness can be major challenges. A successful AI rollout requires a mindset geared toward continuous learning and innovation. Bridging the skills gap is crucial, as is improving data quality and infrastructure. Importantly, India must establish clear guidelines around responsible AI, privacy, and ethics to ensure sustainable, trust-driven growth in the sector.

Tech companies seek higher power limit for Wi-Fi devices
New Delhi: The technology industry wants the power levels permitted for Wi-Fi and other devices to be used under the 6 GHz spectrum band to be reviewed and aligned with global standards, so that users can get the best performances and devices remain affordable. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has come out with draft rules for use of low power and very low power wireless systems in the lower 6 GHz band, which has been delicensed, or will be allocated without auctions. Once the consultation on the draft rules is over, the final rules will be notified allowing the latest Wi-Fi routers and gaming consoles to work in India. As per experts, the current power levels proposed by DoT may limit the range and throughput of very low power devices. The DoT has proposed a maximum power spectral density (PSD) level of -5 dBm/MHz and total transmit power of 14 dBm for such devices. The industry wants it to be revised to 1 dBm/MHz for very low power indoor and outdoor devices otherwise it could have a major impact on the performance of Wi-Fi advanced applications such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) collectively, which demand high throughput and latency performance Although this increase is not beneficial to applications requiring wide channel bandwidth sizes of 80/160/320MHz, it can incrementally help with very low power applications utilising 20 MHz and 40 MHz channel sizes. As per Broadband India Forum (BIF), which counts tech majors like Meta, Google, Microsoft, Amazon as members, the permitted power levels need to be reviewed so as to permit equitable distribution of devices in indoor and outdoor environments. 'Also, it needs to be aligned with global best practices to enable use of affordably priced devices in India,' BIF President TV Ramachandran said. He also reiterated the demand to delicense another 160 MHz spectrum in the 6 GHz band so that the full economic benefits can be realised. The government has so far delicensed 500 MHz spectrum ((5925-6425 MHz) in the band. 'The complete benefits of license exemption of 6GHz spectrum band can only be realised when at least an additional 160 MHz is delicensed – bringing the total to at least 660 MHz,' Ramachandran said. Experts said the 6 GHz band can offer data speeds of up to 9.6 gigabits per second (Gbps), against 1.3 Gbps in the 5 GHz band and 600 megabit per second (Mbps) in the 2.4 GHz band. Over 84 countries, including the US, UK and South Korea, have already delicensed the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi services. Wi-Fi services are currently offered in India through the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. These are congested and offer limited speeds and capacity for data-heavy applications such as online gaming, internet of things, assisted reality and virtual reality.
