PM Modi pays tribute to Santhal revolution heroes on occasion of Hul Diwas
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to the heroes of the Santhal Revolution on the occasion of Hul Diwas.
He honoured leaders like Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano, remembering their courage and sacrifices in fighting against foreign rule.
In a post on X, Narendra Modi wrote, 'Hul Diwas reminds us of the indomitable courage and remarkable valor of our tribal society. On this special occasion connected to the historic Santhal Revolution, I wholeheartedly pay tribute and honor to Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano, along with all those brave heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives fighting against the atrocities of foreign rule. Their saga of bravery will continue to inspire every generation of the nation to protect the pride of the motherland.'

Hul Kranti Diwas is observed nationwide on June 30 to honor the brave revolutionaries who fought fiercely against British rule. On this day in 1855, tribal leaders Sidhu-Kanho and Chand-Bhairav led around 50,000 tribals in Bhognadih (now part of Sahibganj) to revolt against the exploitative money-lending system and settlement policies imposed by the British.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey condemned the Jharkhand government for allegedly attacking the descendants of Sido Kano, a hero of the 1855 uprising, in Bhognadih on Hul Diwas.
He accused the government of targeting innocent people, including women, children, and the elderly, and questioned whether this was a sign of respect for tribal families who contributed to India's independence.

PMC promises to reopen Vishrambaug Wada by end of July

Civic officials said delays were due to the intricate nature of wooden restoration work, which aimed to retain the original Maratha-era architecture. (HT FILE) Vishrambaug Wada, located opposite Tulsi Baug, has been closed to the public for the past few years due to restoration work. Built in 1807 AD in the Peshwa architectural style, the wada was designed by Mansaram Laxman and Daji Suthar. Some sections were damaged in a fire in 1880, and the building later housed the Pune Municipal Council office between 1930 and 1960. Khardekar, who visited the site with PMC's heritage cell officer Sunil Mohite on Sunday, said, 'Though the restoration of the back section was completed long ago, the work of front portion was delayed. After our visit, PMC chief engineer Yuvraj Deshmukh assured us that the wada would be reopened in the last week of July.' Civic officials said delays were due to the intricate nature of wooden restoration work, which aimed to retain the original Maratha-era architecture. The structure features cypress-shaped columns, each carved from a single teak tree — a hallmark of traditional Maratha residential architecture. The wada is spread over an acre and a half. Khardekar demanded that PMC either manage the site or appoint a dedicated agency that handles heritage structures.

Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into 3 BJP workers' murder in Sandeshkhali
Six years after three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were allegedly killed and their bodies mutilated in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, the Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. Justice Joy Sengupta directed that the CBI's Joint Director lead the investigation, with progress monitored by the trial court. In June 2019, BJP workers Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal and Sukanta Mondal were found dead. Their families, Supriya Mondal and Padma Mondal, filed two FIRs, and the state CID initially handled the case. Sheikh Shahjahan, a prime accused, was later dropped from both charge sheets, according to the victims' relatives. On January 8 last year, backed by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the families returned to the High Court, seeking a CBI probe. Shahjahan has been in judicial custody since his arrest on January 5, 2024, following an alleged assault on ED officers during a raid at his Sandeshkhali home. His bail plea is pending before the High Court. Locals, especially women, have long protested Shahjahan's influence, accusing him and his associates of land grabs, forced fish pond construction on occupied fields and harassment of residents. Opposition parties, including the BJP, staged demonstrations in response to these allegations. In June 2019, three BJP-affiliated workers were found murdered in Sandeshkhali (North 24 Parganas) amid violent street clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP. Investigators initially linked the killings to local TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, but the state CID later removed his name from the chargesheet. The families alleged police inaction on a 2019 FIR that named Shahjahan. They even sought court protection and a CBI probe. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said the victims' relatives feared reprisals and were placed in a police safe house for protection.
