American Olympic champion Sha'Carri Richardson arrested for alleged domestic violence

Olympic sprinting legend Sha'Carri Richardson withdrew from the US Track and Field Championships in Oregon on Friday as it emerged she had been arrested over an alleged domestic violence offence. Reigning world 100m champion Richardson, one of the US's biggest stars, was detained by police at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Sunday. She was released the following day, with NBC reporting the incident was related to a domestic violence accusation. According to NBC, the police report states that Richardson and her boyfriend, fellow American sprinter Christian Coleman, were arguing as they exited a security checkpoint. Surveillance video also allegedly showed Richardson pushing Coleman into a column as he tried to walk away from her. The report also states Richardson continued to allegedly bump into Coleman before throwing a pair of headphones at him. Police arrested Richardson for fourth-degree domestic violence assault as a result of security camera footage of the incident. According to jail records she was booked into South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington on Sunday evening before being released on Monday afternoon. The case against her has since been cleared, with Coleman refusing to press charges and 'declined to be a victim,' according to a report from The Athletic. News of Richardson's arrest came as USA Track and Field confirmed she would not continue competing at this week's championships in Eugene despite racing in the opening heats of the women's 100m on Thursday. Richardson – who famously was barred from competing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana use after her victory at the US trials – gave no indication she had been arrested last weekend and was not questioned about it following her heat. As a defending world champion, Richardson already has a bye into the World Championships in Japan and was under no obligation to race in Eugene. She clocked her fastest 100m of the season in Thursday's heat, with a time of 11.07sec. A smiling Richardson said on Thursday she had been happy to compete in Eugene, knowing that her place on the team for Tokyo was already assured. 'USA is one of the hardest teams to make, so it definitely is a kind of a release of pressure knowing I have a bye,' she told AFP. 'It feels really good to not have that pressure and still be able to go to Tokyo. 'Right now I'm cruising under the radar, but when it's time to hit – it's gonna be a bang where y'all see my name.' Richardson's exit came as men's 100m world champion Noah Lyles withdrew from the remaining rounds of the short sprint. Lyles, who is also already qualified for Tokyo, will race in the 200m on Sunday.

Hollywood's richest actress Jami Gertz spotted looking unrecognisable

Eighties actress Jami Gertz has been spotted looking unrecognisable years after she ditched Hollywood and became a billionaire. Gertz acted in 1980s classics like The Lost Boys and Sixteen Candles, and also made an appearance in the original Twister in the 90s. She has since amassed an estimated USD$8 billion (AUD$12.5 billion) fortune, putting her ahead of Hollywood greats including Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon and Brad Pitt and making her the richest actor in the world. She was spotted this week having lunch at a private members' club that attracts some of Hollywood's most powerful elite. Gertz kept things low-key in a light blue blouse, white trousers and matching shoes as she chatted with a pal. The former Hollywood star worked as a child actress before scoring her breakthrough role the 1987 drama Less than Zero with Robert Downey, Jr. In 1989, Gertz married banker Tony Ressler who over the course of the following decade forged an incredibly lucrative career in private equity. Ressler co-founded Apollo Global Management in 1990, which has since gone on to be worth an estimated $125 billion. Seven years later, he launched a second firm, Ares Management, which also skyrocketed in success. The husband and wife duo have since collaborated on numerous business ventures, including Gertz's own production company, Lime Orchard Productions, which has developed movies including like Heretic, Dune: Prophecy and One Piece. In 2015, the couple then bought the NBA team the Atlanta Hawks for a reported $720 million. 'I get it,' she told Hollywood Reporter. 'It's not your everyday Hollywood actress tale.' 'Everyone thinks I married a rich guy. But I made more money — way more money — than Tony when I met him. I paid for our first house. I paid for our first vacation. I married him because I fell in love with him.' She went on to open up about quitting Hollywood, confessing that her duties with the Atlanta Hawks became too time consuming to juggle both careers. 'It just seemed like a natural moment for me to take a break from acting,' she said. 'It's hard to even say it out loud, because I love what I do. It's given me so many beautiful things in my life, taught me so many things about myself and the world around me.'

Statement issued after Formula One star Max Verstappen throws towel from car at Hungarian Grand Prix

Lando Norris completed an impressive practice double over his McLaren teammate and championship rival Oscar Piastri at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Friday. Norris trails Piastri by 16 points heading into Sunday's round at the Hungaroring - the final race before the summer break. But the British driver laid down an early marker in the first running of the weekend when he beat Piastri to top spot by just 0.019 seconds. He then extended his advantage to 0.291 seconds in the day's concluding session. Norris' world championship bid suffered a setback at last weekend's rain-hit Belgian Grand Prix when Piastri overtook him on the first racing lap and went on to claim a comfortable win. Piastri is happy to be back in Hungary where he enjoyed his breakthrough F1 victory last year. The 24-year-old Melburnian has developed into a genuine title contender over the last year and said on Thursday: 'I have a lot of confidence in myself that I can do it. 'The pace in the last few weekends, especially (Belgium), I've been very confident in and very proud of. I'm more than capable of continuing that for the rest of the year.' However, it was Norris - never previously out-qualified by a teammate in six visits to the Hungaroring - who stole an early advantage with an impressive performance on Friday at a circuit he has declared among his favourites on the calendar. There was one moment of concern for Norris when he ran wide at the final turn. But he managed to retake control of his McLaren, and survived without ending up in the wall. Charles Leclerc finished third for Ferrari, four-tenths off the pace, but three places clear of team-mate Lewis Hamilton. In the first session, Hamilton complained his car didn't 'feel good', and ran off the road at the first corner following a major lock-up. He was then beaten by both Aston Martin drivers in the second running. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso were fourth and fifth respectively - the latter returning to his cockpit after he missed the opening session with a back injury - while George Russell ended the running in seventh. Max Verstappen, who ended speculation on Thursday that he could leave Red Bull at the end of the year, finished a distant 14th in practice, more than 1.1 seconds slower than Norris. Red Bull were then reprimanded for a bizarre incident involving a face towel which Verstappen threw out of his car and on to the track. The four-times world champion was summoned after the second session at the Hungaroring as stewards reviewed the video evidence. 'Shortly after Car 1 was released from its garage, the driver of Car 1 (Verstappen) was observed to have thrown a towel out of the cockpit,' they said in a statement. 'The driver explained that while in the garage, the face towel had slipped from his lap to the side of the seat and the team was unaware that it remained in the cockpit. 'When the driver realised it was there, he moved to the far right of the track and attempted to throw it as far away from the car and the track as possible.' The towel landed on the asphalt, however, and remained there to the end of the session. The stewards accepted that the towel was more dangerous inside the car than out, with the potential to become lodged in the footwell and interfere with Verstappen's ability to control the car fully. They also ruled that Red Bull had therefore released the car in an unsafe condition, although less serious than leaving a hard object in the cockpit.
