SK Networks President Sunghwan Choi encounters former UK Prime Minister

Korea Herald23-05-2025
SEOUL, South Korea, May 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- SK Networks, aiming to evolve into an "AI-focused business holding company", is intensifying its initiatives to enhance collaboration and expand its operations through a global network. In this context, Sunghwan Choi, President & COO of SK Networks, who has been steering the tech-focused AI operations of the headquarters and its subsidiaries, reportedly met with former UK Prime Minister Sunak to explore methods for improving exchanges and corporate collaboration between the two nations.
As stated by company representatives, this Tuesday at The Shilla Seoul, President Choi and former Prime Minister Sunak held a breakfast meeting to exchange global trends and discuss AI and other technological collaborations between nations and corporations. SK Networks founded Hico Capital (now SK Networks Americas) in Silicon Valley, USA, in 2020. The company has been concentrating on global investments in and partnerships with technology firms centered around Hicosystem, the human network associated with future expansion sectors. The opportunity for an unexpected in-person meeting between Rishi Sunak, who visited South Korea for an international conference, and Sunghwan Choi is believed to stem from this network.
During this meeting, the pair shared perspectives on the current state of the global economy. They also discussed approaches to enhance relations between the two countries from the viewpoints of a politician and a business leader, as well as the possibilities and examples of AI collaboration at both national and corporate levels. In this context, President Choi presented innovative AI-based cases and global strategies from SK Group and SK Networks, expressing optimism that, in line with current trends, the company's AI endeavors would grow in the UK and across Europe, aiding the advancement of human civilization.
The industry has high expectations for the future potential of SK Networks, which is evolving into an AI company. In particular, NAMUH x held a showcase last month and received a favorable response from participants for its groundbreaking air purification and vital sign monitoring capabilities powered by AI. The brand intends to expand into the international market, including the US and Malaysia, following its official launch in Korea in July. It was established from the resources of SK Magic and is strategically overseen by SK Networks. NAMUH x manages its brand communication independently, emphasizing innovative technologies and services that differentiate it from SK Magic's existing products. PhnyX Lab, an AI startup comprised of Silicon valley talent, introduced a modular RAG (retrieval augmented generation) solution for the pharmaceutical sector named Cheiron at the end of last year and is preparing for market growth by forming tailored partnerships with businesses. The heads of SK Magic and PhnyX Lab attended the meeting alongside President Choi and former Prime Minister Sunak. Former Prime Minister Sunak stated, "AI holds the key to transforming the future of drug development. It promises new levels of speed and precision that could help hundreds of millions of patients around the world." He added, "Phynx Lab's Cherion looks like the kind of technology that has the potential to play an important part in this revolution."
SK Networks' efforts in collaborating and partnering with prominent global personalities and firms are expected to enhance its position as an AI enterprise.

Outgoing Indian envoy, Herald CEO discuss India-Korea ties

Outgoing Indian Ambassador to Korea Amit Kumar and Herald Media Group CEO Choi Jin-young underscored deepening India-Korea ties in a courtesy meeting on Wednesday. They discussed bilateral dimensions and mutual perceptions amid global economic uncertainties, with Kumar praising the Herald Media Group's commercial forums and events for connecting Korean and Indian businesses. 'I'll leave a note for my successor,' Kumar said, referring to Herald Media Group events and content such as the Hello India series, which helped bridge the information gap between Korea, India and the wider world. He cited HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering's memorandum of understanding with India's largest state-owned shipbuilder, Cochin Shipyard Limited, for long-term cooperation in the shipbuilding value chain. "In green hydrogen, we have known four companies, four Indian companies, which are accredited by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy," Kumar added. Choi urged deeper strategic cooperation and stronger economic diplomacy between India and Korea to ensure future economic security, while thanking Kumar for his efforts in boosting ties and hosting the India-Korea Business Partnership Forum in November 2024. 'India and Korea together can respond to global challenges more effectively,' said Choi, suggesting ways to 'strengthen networks' for strategic goals through stronger economic diplomacy. Kumar will return to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi after completing his tenure in South Korea this month. sanjaykumar@

Speaking during a conference call following Naver's second-quarter earnings release, Choi highlighted the strength of Naver Cloud in building and operating data centers, developing large language models and managing advanced graphics processing unit infrastructure. 'We see sovereign AI as a tremendous opportunity. Years of investment in AI technology are now laying the foundation for long-term growth,' Choi said. The CEO further emphasized that the IT giant is actively expanding its sovereign AI business globally. 'Leveraging our domestic experience in technology and service operations, we aim to meet the AI sovereignty needs of overseas governments and institutions,' she said. 'With the reliability and stability that only Naver can provide, we plan to broaden our global footprint.' SK hynix overtakes Samsung to lead global memory market for 1st time with HBM surge

SK hynix has claimed the top spot in the global memory chip market for the first time, overtaking long-time leader Samsung Electronics on the back of its dominance in high bandwidth memory chips, the highly lucrative artificial intelligence products. According to market tracker Counterpoint Research on Thursday, SK hynix recorded 21.8 trillion won ($15.6 billion) in memory sales, including both DRAM and NAND products, in the April-June period, narrowly surpassing Samsung's 21.2 trillion won. SK hynix also hit an all-time high quarterly operating profit of 9.2 trillion won from its chip sales alone. This is almost double Samsung's total operating profit of 4.6 trillion won across all segments, including smartphones, consumer electronics, memory, logic chips and contract chipmaking. SK hynix' rise is largely attributed to its leadership in the fast-growing HBM memory chips, a critical component for AI processors. Since becoming a key supplier of cutting-edge HBM chips to Nvidia, the world's largest graphic processing unit supplier, the memory chip maker has seen a consistent increase in profitability, while Samsung's earnings have been on a downward trend, reflecting its weaker position in the HBM market. According to Counterpoint's Memory Tracker, Samsung's share of HBM shipments plummeted to 17 percent in the second quarter of this year from 41 percent a year earlier, trailing behind SK hynix and US-based Micron Technology. SK hynix accounted for 62 percent of global HBM shipments, followed by Micron with a 21 percent share. The decline in Samsung's share was attributed in part to US export restrictions to China introduced earlier this year, which limited the company's sales channels. As SK hynix is seeing soaring sales by supplying Nvidia with its most advanced 8-layer and 12-layer HBM3E products, Samsung is struggling to pass the GPU maker's qualification tests and remains largely dependent on older-generation HBM3 chips for its HBM sales. 'The good news is that Samsung's HBM sales appear to have bottomed out in (the first quarter of) 2025 and are showing signs of recovery in (the second quarter),' Choi Jeong-ku, Counterpoint Research analyst, said. 'To regain lost market share, however, it is critical for Samsung to diversify its HBM3E customer base and pass Nvidia's stringent quality tests.' Choi also noted that Samsung should focus on achieving stable yield levels to supply next-generation HBM4 for Nvidia's upcoming Rubin platform. "Considering the recent announcement that Samsung Foundry has won orders from Tesla, there is growing expectation for an overall improvement in Samsung's future performance," Choi added.
