Stocks slip as market awaits Nvidia, Salesforce earnings — here's what we expect

CNBC28-05-2025

Every weekday the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer holds a "Morning Meeting" livestream at 10:20 a.m. ET. Here's a recap of Wednesday's key moments. 1. The stock market is slightly lower ahead of major earnings Wednesday evening. This follows the S & P 500's 2% rally on Tuesday in reaction to President Donald Trump's 50% European Union tariff pause and a better-than-expected consumer confidence report. "People are a little more nervous [today]," said Jim Cramer, pointing out that investors may be taking profits after Tuesday's big move up. The 10-year Treasury is higher but still sitting under 4.5% 2. Nvidia and Salesforce are two big names reporting earnings after the bell. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will join "Mad Money" later, when Jim Cramer plans to ask more about trade deals and China. At Salesforce, we're eyeing growth from the company's core business amid fears that CEO Marc Benioff has neglected it to aggressively roll out Agentforce, its platform of autonomous AI agents that isn't expected to contribute material revenue for a while. "That's a problem. It better start producing revenue," said Jim, adding that the company's other big deals should be bringing in cash too. 3. Broadcom's price target was raised to $283 from $198 at Melius Research, which said stock still has room for growth as its number of custom AI accelerator customers more than doubled (to 7 from 3). Analysts also pointed out that the spending of two of its largest customers, Alphabet and Meta Platforms , hasn't slowed down. Melius kept its buy rating on the stock. The Club used Tuesday's rally to trim 50 shares of Broadcom and downgraded our rating to a 2, meaning we would buy more shares on a pullback. 4. Stocks covered in Wednesday's rapid fire at the end of the video were: Okta , Macy's , Abercombie & Fitch , and Dick's Sporting Goods (Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust is long AVGO, CRM, NVDA. See here for a full list of the stocks. As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio. If Jim has talked about a stock on CNBC TV, he waits 72 hours after issuing the trade alert before executing the trade. Xcel Brands Inc (NASDAQ:XELB) closed a strategic transaction with United Trademark Group, enhancing global distribution and supply chain capabilities. The partnership with UTG provided $3 million in liquidity and reduced interest and principal payments by over $1 million annually through March 2027. Social media reach expanded significantly from 5 million to 45 million followers, enhancing brand visibility and potential for video commerce. C. Wonder and Christie Brinkley brands are the fastest-growing on HSN, indicating strong market performance. The company has successfully reduced operating costs by nearly 50% year over year, improving financial efficiency. Total revenues for Q4 2024 and the full fiscal year were significantly lower compared to the previous year due to the sale of the Lori Goldstein brand and exit from wholesale operations. The company reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of $792,000 in Q4 2024, although it was an improvement over the previous year. Net loss for Q1 2025 was approximately $2.8 million, reflecting ongoing financial challenges. The impact of tariffs and the consolidation of HSN's operations into QVC's headquarters pose potential risks to future performance. Liquidity remains a concern with only $0.3 million in unrestricted cash as of March 31, 2025, despite recent refinancing efforts. Q: Robert, you mentioned an adjusted EBITDA forecast for 2025 between $1 million and $2.5 million. Does this include the impact of tariffs? A: Yes, it includes potential impacts from tariffs and any disruptions from HSN's move from Tampa to West Chester, PA. We are working on mitigating measures, including domestic production options. Q: Jim, you mentioned a run rate of $1 million. Is this per month? A: The run rate refers to overhead costs, which are less than $2.5 million per quarter, or about $9 million annually. Q: Can you remind us of the guarantees from G-III on Halston, and when do those royalties start? A: The guaranteed minimum under the license is $1.7 million per year. We plan on the minimums with some pick-up in Q2, and expect to exceed minimums as they ship for fall. Q: How do you view your liquidity needs for this year, especially with new brand launches? A: Our liquidity is currently good. We have more transactions in the pipeline and will address additional capital needs if they arise. For now, we believe we are okay. Q: Can you discuss the revenue potential of your recently launched brands? A: All brands are exciting, especially Cesar Millan's pet products, which we expect to be strong. Gemma Stafford and Jenny Martinez also have significant potential in retail and e-commerce. These brands collectively reach over 30 million social media followers. Q: Regarding the Isaac Mizrahi brand, are you considering monetizing your minority interest? A: Isaac Mizrahi has been a great brand for us. We oversee the QVC business and will continue to support the brand as needed. WHP partners handle third-party licensing. Q: What types of acquisitions are you interested in? A: We are interested in brands with significant social media followings and media companies that can extend our reach. Q: How do you view the revenue growth associated with the increase in social media followers? A: Each opportunity has the potential to generate $5 million to $10 million of royalty income per year. It will take time to ramp up, but we are optimistic about the potential. For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. Markets mixed as investors turn their attention to ECB rate decision

Markets are widely expecting the European Central Bank (ECB) to cut interest rates again at its monetary policy meeting later today. "At its most recent meeting in April, the ECB reduced its key interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing the deposit facility rate to 2.25%. Markets are now pricing in another cut in June, though expectations for further easing beyond that remain uncertain. A potential pause in July is gaining traction, as the ECB evaluates incoming economic data and inflation dynamics," market analysts at said. The latest decision will come as inflation in the euro area cooled more than expected in May, bolstering expectations that the ECB will announce another interest rate cut. Annual consumer price growth slowed to 1.9% in May, down from 2.2% in April, according to a flash estimate from Eurostat this week. The figure came in below economists' forecast of 2%, and marks the first time inflation has dipped below the ECB's 2% target since September 2024. The decline in headline inflation suggests that business uncertainty, partly driven by renewed global trade tensions and soft consumer demand, is weighing on pricing power across sectors. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, also showed signs of easing. It slowed to 2.4% in May, from 2.7% in April, falling below expectations of 2.5%. On a monthly basis, core prices rose by just 0.1%. US futures edged lower and oil prices declined. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 shed 0.2% to 37,658.46, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 declined nearly 0.1% to 8,535.10. In South Korea, the Kospi jumped 2.1% to 2,829.48 after the country's new president and leading liberal politician Lee Jae-myung began his term, vowing to restart talks with North Korea and beef up a trilateral partnership with the US and Japan. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.9% to 23,856.54, while the Shanghai Composite was little changed, inching down less than 0.1% to 3,374.30. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 finished the day virtually unchanged at 5,970.81 and remained 2.8% below its all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.2% to 42,427.74, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite added 0.3% to 19,460.49. The action was stronger in the bond market, where Treasury yields tumbled following weaker-than-expected economic updates. In other dealings early Thursday morning, benchmark US crude fell 8 cents to $62.77 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, edged up 1 cent to $64.87 a barrel. The US dollar rose to 142.87 Japanese yen from 142.78 yen. The euro cost $1.1413, little changed from $1.1418.

CNBC Daily Open: The health of the U.S. economy can depend on your viewing angle

Based on payrolls processing firm ADP's jobs report and the U.S. Federal Reserve "Beige Book," the United States economy appears to be slowing. The number of private sector jobs created in May rose by a mere 37,000, almost three times lower than the Dow Jones forecast. And the Fed report noted that "economic activity has declined slightly since the previous report" released April 23. The ADP report, however, isn't always aligned with the Labor Department's jobs report, which will be released Friday. For example, the former stated that private companies added 107,000 jobs in January 2024, but the latter posted a 353,000 gain in nonfarm payrolls for the same period. Meanwhile, the Fed's "Beige Book" report is based on "reports from Bank and Branch directors" and "interviews and online questionnaires." Hence, while it provides a useful snapshot of economic sentiment, it is a "qualitative" report, as the Fed acknowledges, that might not capture economic data. According to Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, the speed at which an object is traveling depends on the position of an observer. Wednesday's reports can give an insight into the economy, but they could also be skewed by the vantage point of the observers. Dow snaps consecutive gainsU.S. stocks were mixed Wednesday. The S&P 500 was flat and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.32%. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.22%, ending a four-day winning streak. Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed Thursday. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.47% at 1:30 p.m. in Singapore as Asian technology stocks such as Meituan, Alibaba and Kuaishou Technology extended gains for a second session. Slackening labor market in the called on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to "LOWER THE RATE" after payrolls processing firm ADP reported the lowest level of private sector jobs creation in years. Payrolls increased just 37,000 for May, below the downwardly revised 60,000 in April and the Dow Jones forecast for 110,000. It was the lowest monthly job total from the ADP count since March 2023. Fed's 'Beige Book' reports slowing U.S. economyThe U.S. economy has contracted over the past six weeks as hiring has slowed and consumers and businesses worried about tariff-related price increases, according to a Federal Reserve report Wednesday. In its periodic "Beige Book" summary of conditions, the central bank noted that "economic activity has declined slightly since the previous report" released April 23. Circle prices its IPO higher than expectedCircle Internet Group, the issuer of USD Coin, one of the world's biggest stablecoins, priced its initial public offering at $31 per share late Wednesday stateside. That's above the expected range of $27 to $28 and gives the company a total market value of $6.8 billion. New York-based Circle, its founder and some original shareholders will raise $1.05 billion in the offering of 34 million shares. White House imposes travel banThe Trump administration signed a proclamation Wednesday suspending travel to the U.S. for citizens from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Citing national security interests, the proclamation states that the identified countries lack sufficient vetting and screening processes, which could increase the risk of terrorism threats to America. [PRO] Financial sector stocks slowingThe financial sector, seen as a potential winner of the Trump administration, is starting to cool. While the group is still outperforming the S&P year to date, the gap has been closing in recent weeks, wrote Wolfe Research analyst Rob Ginsberg, who highlighted one aspect of the sector that is the "most concerning." Auto industry sounds the alarm as China's rare earth curbs start to bite Several European auto supplier plants and production lines have already been shut down because of China's recent export controls, according to Europe's auto supplier association CLEPA, which warned of more outages as inventories deplete. CLEPA said Wednesday that while hundreds of export license applications have been submitted to the Chinese authorities since early April, only around 25% appear to have been approved. China's Ministry of Commerce in early April imposed export restrictions on several rare earth elements and magnets widely used in the automotive, defense and energy sectors. The curbs came as part of a response to Trump's tariff increase on Beijing's products.
