Lahore hosts Pakistan's first Farm Animal Welfare Conference
Marking a significant milestone for animal welfare in Pakistan, the country's first-ever Farm Animal Welfare Conference concluded in Lahore with a compelling declaration. The conference urged policymakers to reform national laws and policies in accordance with Islamic values, scientific research, and international standards of animal well-being.
Organized by the Pakistan Animal Rights Advocacy Group (PARAG), the one-day summit brought together leading voices from academia, veterinary sciences, law, agriculture, environmental science, and faith-based communities.
Keynote addresses were delivered by Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, Chairman of the Punjab Higher Education Commission and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, and Dr. Muhammad Arshad.

Other prominent speakers included Islamic scholar Mufti Syed Adeel, environmentalist Dr. Mahnoor Fatima, renowned veterinary expert Dr. Zahid Mehmood, animal rights lawyer Uzma Qureshi, and farmer representative Chaudhry Naeem.
Speakers highlighted the multifaceted dimensions of animal welfare, advocating for humane treatment, ethical farming practices, and the need to integrate animal compassion into national values.
The conference declaration voiced deep concern over outdated animal welfare laws in Pakistan and emphasized the urgent need for reforms in animal housing, farming, and slaughtering practices. It also noted a significant lack of training among farmers and slaughterhouse staff.
Participants unanimously asserted that kindness to animals is not merely a moral obligation but a religious duty, reinforcing that under Article 14 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the state is responsible for upholding dignity including that of animals.

Panel discussions addressed a range of critical issues including legislative reform, improved nutrition and housing for animals, Shariah-compliant slaughter methods, protection of native flora and pollinators such as bees, and hands-on farmer education.
Speaking on the occasion, PARAG Chairperson Ayeza Haider emphasized that the summit marks a transformative step toward reshaping public consciousness. 'It is time we move beyond viewing animals solely as commodities. Treating them with empathy and compassion should be seen as a hallmark of a truly humane and noble society,' she said.

Three PTI lawmakers: ECP issues disqualification notifications
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued disqualification notifications for three Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers, including Senator Ejaz Chaudhary, following their convictions by an anti-terrorism court. In seperate notifications issued Monday, the ECP confirmed the disqualification of Chaudhary, MNA Muhammad Ahmad Chattha, and Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Ahmad Khan Bhachar. Leghari stressed the need to reverse this trend.. photo: file Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have pledged to expand bilateral trade to $100 million and signed multiple agreements to boost cooperation in trade, energy, health, investment, and education during the 5th Session of the Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) held in Islamabad. According to an official statement released on Monday, the meeting, co-chaired by Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari and Kyrgyz Deputy Chairman Edil Baisalov, marked a renewed push to strengthen economic, scientific, and technical collaboration between the two countries. Trade between the two nations has declined from $11.2 million in 2022-23 to $5.18 million in 2024-25. Leghari stressed the need to reverse this trend. "We acknowledge the pressing need to revitalise our trade engagement and reaffirm our shared aspiration to elevate bilateral trade up to $100 million," he said. Both sides agreed to diversify exports and imports, revive the Pakistan-Kyrgyz Joint Business Council, and organise B2B exchanges, business forums, and trade fairs. Three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed. The first was between Kyrgyzstan's Centre for Standardisation and Metrology and Pakistan's Standards and Quality Control Authority to collaborate on conformity assessment, metrology, and quality systems. The second MoU was between Kyrgyzstan's National Investments Agency and Pakistan's Board of Investment to promote investment, especially in textiles, minerals, IT, pharmaceuticals, and tourism. The third MoU involved Halal trade cooperation between Pakistan's Halal Authority and Kyrgyzstan's Halal Development Centre. Energy and environmental cooperation were also discussed. Kyrgyzstan proposed joint work on a power transmission line linking Kyrgyzstan, China, and Pakistan. Both sides agreed to explore electricity imports, renewable energy, hydrocarbons, mining, and institutional partnerships. Connectivity and logistics were key themes. Both sides agreed to strengthen postal services, cargo, civil aviation, and rail transport. Pakistan urged Kyrgyz airlines to shift from charter to scheduled flights. Kyrgyzstan proposed a new air route via China and invited Pakistani participation in a high-speed fibre-optic cable project. On finance, the State Bank of Pakistan and the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic agreed to cooperate on Islamic banking, financial innovation, and training programmes through Pakistan's National Institute of Banking and Finance. Health and pharmaceutical cooperation were also advanced. The sides agreed to support Pakistani pharmaceutical exports to Kyrgyzstan, ease medicine registration, and explore joint vaccine production with the National Institute of Health. Discussions also focused on public procurement participation and regulatory alignment. Cultural exchange was highlighted as essential to people-to-people ties. Both sides agreed to increase cultural events, sports participation, and content sharing between media outlets. Cooperation in cinema and broadcasting training was proposed. Education and scientific collaboration were emphasised. Pakistan pledged continued support to Kyrgyz students through the Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme (PTAP). Joint research, academic exchanges, and training in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) will be encouraged. The two countries also agreed to explore labour cooperation through a Joint Working Group. Tourism and hospitality also featured in talks. Both nations agreed to finalise an MoU and promote tour operator exchanges, joint exhibitions, and marketing of natural and cultural heritage. Agriculture cooperation gained momentum with the signing of an MoU on trade in Kyrgyz legumes and Pakistani Basmati rice. Veterinary and phytosanitary control collaboration will ensure food safety and efficiency in trade. Pakistan welcomed Kyrgyz interest in investing in its mining sector, especially in copper and gold. Discussions also included digital commerce and implementing cargo operations under a 1995 transportation agreement. Leghari called the At-Bashi Logistics Centre offer to Pakistan's National Logistics Corporation a model of enterprise-level cooperation and proposed enhancing online visibility of investment opportunities through updated SEZ and tax incentive information. On energy, Pakistan reiterated its interest in the proposed 500 kV TorugartXUARGilgit Baltistan transmission line as part of a KyrgyzstanChinaPakistan electricity corridor. In conclusion, both sides agreed to hold the 6th IGC session in Kyrgyzstan, with dates to be decided through diplomatic channels. The Ministry of Economic Affairs called the session a key milestone in Pakistan's engagement with Central Asia. "These initiatives will contribute to sustainable development, shared prosperity, and stronger people-to-people ties," the ministry stated. Leghari echoed this vision in his concluding remarks: "Let us reaffirm our commitment to fostering a stronger, integrated, and resilient partnership anchored in mutual respect, cooperation, and regional peace."

Saif-led KP team arrives in Beijing
PESHAWAR: A 12-member Pakistani delegation led by Advisor to KP CM on Information, Barrister Dr. Muhammad Ali Saif, arrived in Beijing on Sunday following visits to Urumqi and Kashgar. The delegation comprises prominent religious scholars, academics, and political figures. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the group with a warm welcome. During their stay in Beijing, the delegation visited China's first official mosque and held a detailed meeting with the leadership of the Islamic Association of China, including the Chairman and Vice Chairman. The delegation was briefed on the current state of Islamic affairs in China. Officials shared that there are approximately 35,000 mosques, 55,000 imams, and more than a dozen active Islamic centers across the country. Beijing alone hosts 72 mosques. Additionally, the Islamic Association operates eight sub-divisions nationwide and organizes various national-level religious competitions. The briefing also highlighted the availability of Quran and Hadith translations in the Chinese language. It was noted that 10,000 Chinese Muslims performed Hajj this year, and several students are currently pursuing religious education at Al-Azhar University in Egypt. Barrister Dr. Saif expressed gratitude on behalf of Pakistan and termed the visits to Urumqi, Kashgar, and Beijing highly productive. Other delegation members included Mufti Zubair Ashraf Usmani (Vice President, Darul Uloom Karachi), Maulana Abdul Qudoos Muhammadi (Spokesperson, Wifaq-ul-Madaris), Mufti Anwar Shah (Head, Jamia Ahsanul Uloom, Karachi), Haji Muhammad Ibrar (Tablighi Jamaat), Maulana Muhammad Ahmad (Darul Uloom Haqqania) and Syed Shah Faisal (Sadat Movement). The delegation invited Chinese Islamic leaders to visit Pakistan and offered free education, accommodation, and essential facilities for Chinese students in Pakistani religious institutions. They emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral religious and academic ties and acknowledged the efforts of Israr Madani and the International Research Council for Religious Affairs in facilitating this initiative. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Minister for Religious Affairs Sahibzada Adnan Qadri and Minister for Social Welfare Syed Qasim Ali Shah praised the visit as a significant step in Pakistan-China relations. Syed Usama Ajmal (Chairman, Pakistan Peace Council) and Syed Shah Faisal also expressed their appreciation to the Chinese government and Islamic Association. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq presented copies of the 'Paigham-e-Pakistan' document to Chinese counterparts, highlighting its message of peace and unity. The Chinese hosts also arranged visits for the delegation to the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and other key historical and cultural sites. The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs, marking a meaningful step towards enhanced religious, educational, and cultural cooperation between Pakistan and China.
