Naomi Osaka Accused Of Being 'Sore Loser' After Final Loss

Naomi Osaka Accused Of Being 'Sore Loser' After Final Loss originally appeared on The Spun. Four-time major champion Naomi Osaka didn't just lose the National Bank Open final on Thursday night, she received backlash for questionable comments she made after the match. Despite winning the opening set, Osaka suffered a brutal collapse against Mboko. She ultimately lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. While it was a disappointing result for Osaka, it was pure jubilation for Mboko, who captured her first WTA Tour title. Obviously, the 18-year-old Canadian had the home crowd on her side in Montreal. Following the match, Osaka was supposed to deliver a speech in front of the fans in Montreal. Unfortunately, it didn't last very long. "I don't really wanna take up too much time. I'll just say thank you to everyone," Osaka said. "Thank you to my team, the ball kids, organizers and volunteers. I hope you guys had a good night." After Osaka delivered this brief speech in Montreal, tennis fans ripped her for showing zero class towards Mboko. "Could Naomi Osaka be more of a sore loser right now? You don't need to give a massive speech but at least congratulate your opponent," one fan commented. "You gotta feel for her but this is not how things are done, pretty much tennis protocol congratulating your opponent," a second fan said. "That was a snarky comment. I can't imagine having to play Mboko and the crowd- but show some class. That was a terrible comment," a third fan added. "Of all people, Naomi Osaka should know how to be gracious to a younger opponent during the post-match ceremony. To not even congratulate Victoria in the speech was a bad look," another fan wrote. Mboko wasn't offended by Osaka's comments. In fact, she showed her a ton of appreciation. "I wanna thank Naomi for an incredible match. I've always looked up to her when I was really little. It's great to play with such an amazing player like you," Mboko said. There'll be plenty of fans cheering on Mboko when the US Open begins later this month. As for Osaka, she'll be left wondering what went wrong in the National Bank Open final. 'It's hard for me to be upset,' Williams added. 'I know that I lost this match because I just, I need more matches. 'I could have played better. But the thing I feel good about is that I did go for it. It's not that I didn't know what to do. It's just that I need to keep working on it.' 'It was not easy at all,' the Spaniard said of taking on Williams. 'She's a legend, it was a privilege to play against her.' Bouzas Maneiro said her 87-minute win was 'like a dream'. 'I never thought that I would ever play Venus,' the 22-year-old said. 'I was just lucky with that. 'I tried to have a lot of intensity, but I had no rhythm. She hits so hard. I tried to focus. I had to be positive to win the points.' Williams was playing Cincinnati for the 11th time. She reached the semi-finals in 2012 and in her most recent prior appearance had lost in the second round to China's Zheng Qinwen in 2023. The 22-year-old will rise one place to sixth in the world rankings, overtaking 24-time Grand Slam singles champion Novak Djokovic in the table. 'It's a surreal feeling,' said Shelton, who is the first American since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win the Canadian trophy. 'It's been a long week. It was not an easy path to the finals. Mboko, who was ranked outside the top 300 to start the season and had climbed to 85th entering the week, is now projected to rise to 34th in the world.
