The home colour trends set to sweep Australia in 2025 - and the ones to avoid if you want a room that ages well

Daily Mail28-04-2025
Burgundy, yellow, sage green and misty blue are going to be the trending home interior colours in 2025, according to a design expert.
These dramatic shades are shaping up to be the go-to for renovators looking to add warmth and vibrancy to their interior home spaces.
Dulux's Colour and Communications Manager Andrea Lucena-Orr explained that this year's trending shades have the potential to 'create atmosphere, connect with your home's surroundings, and make your space feel as unique as you are'.
The expert added that the trending shades were featured throughout many of the home renovation projects that have been selected as finalists in the 2025 Dulux Colour Awards.
Burgundy and deep reds
Starting with arguably the most divisive trending shade for 2025, Andrea confirms that deep red tones like burgundy along with terracotta are 'back in a big way'.
'From living rooms to outdoor spaces, terracotta and burgundy bring richness and confidence. Its timeless appeal suits a wide range of architectural styles,' she told FEMAIL.
She cited residential interior finalist project Claremont by WOWOWA Architecture in Melbourne for cleverly incorporating burgundy along with other warm earthy tones.
Andrea explained that the Spanish-style home featured 'a romantic mix of pastels and rich burgundy to infuse the space with warmth and nostalgia, turning it into an intimate sanctuary'.
The Lava Flow by Pac Studio project in New Zealand was another great example of this hue being well used.
'Volcanic reds throughout the home reflected the surrounding Auckland landscape,' Andrea explained.
Joyful yellow
Yellow is the other surprising colour Andrea singled out as one to watch this year.
'Yellow is making a joyful return, especially when paired with bold contrast colours,' Andrea said.
However, she cautioned that the sunny hue is best used 'sparingly' as an accent to 'add vibrancy without overpowering the space'.
A prime example was in New Zealand finalist Pac Studio's Mt Eden Garden House project, which Andrea says utilised yellow in light wells and on walls to add an energising feel.
Sage green
Sage green is also having an interior colour moment, with Andrea explaining it's the perfect shade 'for creating calm, harmonious spaces'.
Andrea points to Sydney project finalist Balmain East House by Studio Johnston as a prime example of the soft green hue being used to 'bring calm to the kitchen and ground floor' areas.
Misty blue
For those that are only prepared to dip their toe into the world of coloured interiors, Andrea suggests misty blue as the ideal entry point.
'In the world of neutrals, 'greige' (a mix of grey and beige) paired with misty blues is one of the most powerful and peaceful combinations of the year.'
Finalists like Melbourne's Stellar House by Robson Rak is a shining example of 'how this colour combination works in harmony to create serene, sophisticated spaces'.
Colours to avoid
Although some homeowners may be wary of coloured interiors cheapening the overall look of a house, Andrea insists that this year's trending shades can have the opposite effect when used with 'subtlety and finesse'.
'Colours like deep burgundy, rich sage green, and soft blues make a space feel sophisticated and luxurious,' the interior expert explained.
However, Andrea concedes that not all colours 'stand the test of time' – and cautioned home renovators against using certain fast-ageing shades.
'Bright, bold primary colours used in large doses can feel too intense and date quickly,' she advised.
'Flat, stark whites also fall into this category, as they can make a space feel cold and impersonal.

Her wardrobe has always stood out for its mix of simplicity, elegance and thoughtful detail. Whether she's wearing an oversized blazer or a sleek evening gown, Meghan has a clear sense of personal style that blends classic pieces with a modern edge. What I've always appreciated about her fashion choices is how she keeps things polished without overdoing it. Farm Rio co-ord Meghan marked Independence Day 2025 with a relaxed family celebration in Montecito. I've worked in beauty for 16 years. These are the makeup tricks every woman should know - but hardly any do: POLISHED with Elise Wilson

Welcome to Polished with Elise Wilson, where FEMAIL's qualified makeup artist and hair stylist answers your questions, shares advice and trials the up-and-coming beauty and skincare trends so you don't have to. Don't you just love it when a friend or colleague lets you in on a little life hack? Well, the same can be said for beauty tips and tricks too. As someone who has been deep in the glam game for over 16 years - from makeup artist gigs to editing glossy magazine shoots as a beauty editor - I like to think I know a thing or two, especially when it comes to shortcuts in how to look and feel great. But cockiness aside, I can confidently say the best makeup tricks aren't always found on TikTok or in a YouTube tutorial – although let's never underestimate their power. (This year I sat next to makeup queen Chloe Morello at a fashion show and chewed her ear off!). Instead, they're whispered backstage, handed down from top makeup artists, or uncovered after years of trial, error, and accidentally overdoing it with the bronzer. (We've all been there.) I've spent my entire career elbow-deep in foundation swatches, mascara wands and contour sticks, not just for fun (though it is fun), but to find what really works. And let me tell you, it's often the smallest tweaks that make the biggest difference. We're talking skin glow-ups without buying new products, flawless lashes without the clumps, and concealer tricks that actually hide those 6am eye bags. So, whether you're a beauty beginner or a full-blown glam queen, here are the makeup tips and tricks you never knew you needed straight from the pros, road-tested by me, and ready to change your routine for good. Here's the clump-free mascara trick that will change everything Turns out, that humble little fan brush in your kit is more than just for sweeping away drop-down product. It's the secret weapon to achieving the flutteriest, separated, clump-free lashes, especially on the bottom. Here's the method: Instead of brushing on mascara straight from the tube, grab a small, flat fan brush and dip it directly into the mascara. Then gently paint the product onto your lashes from root to tip, focusing on pulling each lash out and up. It takes a bit longer, sure, but the payoff is ultra-defined lashes with zero clumping and that 'are they extensions?' kind of finish. Colour correcting makeup really works It might look like something out of a painter's palette, but colour correcting concealer is not just for beauty influencers doing complicated tutorials. Used right, it's the ultimate cheat code to flawless skin with no full-coverage foundation required. The science is simple: colours opposite each other on the colour wheel cancel each other out. So green cancels out redness (think: angry breakouts, rosacea, around-the-nose redness), peach and orange tones counteract bluey-purple under-eyes, and lavender brightens dull or sallow areas. Dot on sparingly before your regular concealer, tap it in with your finger or a damp sponge, and watch your skin transform. Your dark circles are cancelled out. Literally. The science is simple: colours opposite each other on the colour wheel cancel each other out. Pictured: Kind Collective Cover Up Colour Correcting Concealers ($19ea) The weird film on your powder isn't the end - just grab this tool Makeup artist Genevieve Turley said the hard film is usually a buildup of facial oils transferred back into the powder but can be fixed with a spoolie brush Ever opened your favourite pressed powder only to discover it's gone all... crusty? That weird, hard film that appears on top makes it basically useless, no matter how hard you swirl your brush, nothing picks up. But don't toss it just yet. Makeup artist Genevieve Turley showed it perfectly on her Instagram, explaining that film is usually a buildup of facial oils transferred back into the powder. The fix is a clean spoolie (yes, the one you'd normally use for brows). Gently rub the surface of your compact in small circles with the spoolie to slough off the hardened top layer. Within seconds, the powder underneath is fresh, soft and ready for action. The TRUE way to find your perfect nude lipstick shade Match your lippy to the natural colour of your gums, or your nipples. Both are surprisingly accurate indicators of what a flattering neutral looks like on your skin tone Okay, hear me out, this one sounds weird, but it works so well. Finding the perfect nude lipstick can be surprisingly hard. It's either too pink, too brown, or too grey, and the wrong shade can wash you out faster than you can say 'Kylie Lip Kit'. Instead, match it to the natural colour of your gums, or your nipples. Both are surprisingly accurate indicators of what a flattering neutral looks like on your skin tone. I promise this creates a nude that looks natural, brightens your face and doesn't make you look like you're in desperate need of caffeine. You'll never swatch blindly again. How to make your 'summer' foundation shade match for longer Goldee Bee Ultra Fine Face Tanning Mist ($39.99) To drag out your summer skin glow, introduce face tanners to your skincare and makeup lineup. They've come a long way since the orange-streak days of old and now offer sheer, buildable colour that blends seamlessly with your skincare. Pop a few drops into your serum or moisturiser before bed and wake up looking like you've had eight hours sleep, a green juice, and a light jog on the beach. My top picks: Isle of Paradise and St. Tropez for lighter tones, and Goldee Bee (pictured) or Bondi Sands Face Drops for deeper, golden finishes. The easiest fix for a broken makeup palette Fix a broken powder by blending the broken pieces then add a few drops of rubbing alcohol and mix until it's smooth, press it down and let it dry. Viola (almost) as good as new If you ever drop your favourite palette, don't worry you can fix it. Using a toothpick, blend the broken pieces then add a few drops of rubbing alcohol and mix until it's smooth. Then find something the same shape to press it down - a flat spoon works well. Let it dry completely before using it again. It won't be brand new, but it'll still work just fine. BONUS tricks I swear by... Original Beeswax Moisturising Lip Balm Tame crazy brows with lip balm - In a pinch, swipe a bit of waxy lip balm through your brows and brush them up with a spoolie. I love the Burt's Bee's formula (pictured) for this. It gives an instant feathered look and they stay put all day. Heat your eyelash curler with a hairdryer - Like a curling iron for your lashes - just a quick blast (and let it cool slightly) will help your lashes hold curl way longer. Apply blush before foundation for a natural flush - Otherwise known as 'underpainting', blending cream or liquid blush onto bare skin before applying a light CC Cream over the top gives that 'real skin' look, as if you're genuinely glowing from within. Honestly, I could be here all day, but I hope you find these makeup tricks useful. Half the time, they sound so simple you'll wonder how you never thought of them before. But now you're in the know, you'll never look back.
