MAY 19 — I grew up in military camps.
It was the only childhood I ever knew — spent among rows of army quarters, parade squares, and the ever-present rhythm of discipline and duty.
Like many children of armed forces personnel, I often rode in the back of a three-tonne army truck. Not just to school, but to competitions too.
I can still see it like it was yesterday. I was representing my school in a district-level choral speaking competition in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Other teams arrived in neat school vans and chartered buses.
Then came us. Climbing out of a three-tonne army truck like we'd taken a wrong turn from a military drill. People stared. Some looked puzzled. Others looked concerned.
We didn't win the competition, but we definitely won for the most dramatic entrance. But for us, it was normal. That's just how army kids showed up.
There were no seat belts. No air-conditioning. Just wooden benches, the smell of diesel, and a canvas top that barely kept out the sun or rain. The ride was bumpy, loud, and uncomfortable — but that was our routine. We never questioned it.
As I got older, what once felt normal began to feel deeply troubling.
Even today, decades later, I still see our soldiers and police officers being ferried in the same kind of open-backed trucks I once rode in as a child. The same bare benches.
The same lack of protection. It feels as though nothing has changed — as if the safety of those who stand guard so the rest of us can sleep soundly has long been an afterthought.
We've upgraded everything else — uniforms, weapons, communications systems. Yet somehow, we're still ferrying our personnel around in trucks that look like they've rolled straight out of a war museum. And every time I see one of those trucks hurtling down the highway, I don't wonder if something might go wrong with it. I wonder when.
On May 13, 2025, something did go terribly wrong. A truck carrying Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers collided with a gravel-laden trailer near Bidor, Perak. They had just completed their duties in Teluk Intan and were returning to their base in Ipoh.
Nine officers never made it to Ipoh.

They did not fall in the line of duty. They died on a routine journey along a Malaysian road because of a transport system that failed them. A system we should have fixed long ago.
Beyond the understandable anger directed at the trailer driver, we need to examine this tragedy with a wider lens. Yes, the driver has been charged. The transport company is under investigation. Puspakom, the vehicle inspection authority, has pledged its cooperation.
But focusing solely on individual fault risks missing a deeper, more uncomfortable truth: this was not a random accident. It was the foreseeable consequence of a system that has tolerated outdated practices for far too long.
In the days that followed, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain announced that safety upgrades were being considered — including reinforced vehicles, buses instead of trucks, and police escorts. These are welcome steps. But they also beg the question: why did it take nine deaths for action to even be discussed?
The fact is, in most modern militaries and police forces around the world, open-backed trucks are no longer used to transport personnel. Officers travel in buses, vans, or purpose-built carriers fitted with seat belts, reinforced frames, and other basic safety features. These are not luxuries. They are the minimum standard when lives are on the line.
From an Islamic perspective, hifz al-nafs, or the preservation of life, is among the highest objectives of the maqaṣid al-shariah, the higher intents of Islamic law.
Preserving life is not simply a moral aspiration; it is a duty. It is a sacred amanah — a trust — placed upon those in positions of leadership. When lives are lost due to preventable neglect, especially among those who risk their own for the safety of others, it reflects a serious failure to uphold that amanah.
We need more than condolences and cosmetic fixes. We need a national-level policy on the safe transport of uniformed personnel — one that clearly defines safety standards, mandates the replacement or retrofitting of unsuitable vehicles, institutes regular audits, and ensures accountability at the leadership level.
Because behind every uniform is a person. A father. A mother. A son. A daughter. They deserve more than ceremonial burials after a tragedy. They deserve safety while they serve. And dignity in how they are transported.
I think of those lives. And I think of my own childhood. Climbing out of that same kind of truck in the middle of Kuala Lumpur, unaware of the risks we took as a matter of routine.
I didn't know then how dangerous it was. But now I do.
And now, so do we all.
Let this not become another tragedy we mourn and forget. Let it be the turning point — the moment we say, clearly and collectively: this ends here.
Only then can we say their lives truly mattered.
Only then can we stop asking 'what if.' And start building a system that ensures 'never again.'

Melaka student kills mother, brother in suspected revenge attack over exam pressure
MELAKA, June 12 — A 17-year-old Form Five student has been arrested as the prime suspect in the double murder of his mother and elder brother at their home in Taman Rambai Mutiara, Bukit Rambai early this morning. The Star Online reported the Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar as saying, the teenager allegedly stabbed his 51-year-old mother multiple times while she was asleep in her bedroom around 5am. The suspect's 21-year-old brother, who attempted to intervene, was also fatally attacked. 'Both victims died at the scene from their injuries,' Dzulkhairi reportedly told reporters at the Melaka police headquarters in Bukit Beruang today. The suspect also allegedly assaulted his 13-year-old brother, who remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Melaka Hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed the teenager was unhappy with his mother — a teacher at a vernacular primary school — over constant pressure to excel in his studies and score high marks in examinations. 'He was reportedly told to study late into the night and was often reprimanded by his mother,' Dzulkhairi said, adding that neighbours had heard frequent arguments between the suspect and his family. Police believe the suspect used a 20cm penknife in the attack, which they later found in his school bag. When officers arrived, the teen was seen sitting calmly on the porch of the house. Initially, he claimed the murders were the result of a robbery. However, police said CCTV footage and his eventual confession led to his arrest. Investigations also revealed the suspect had planned the attack, having purchased the knife several days earlier. 'We consider the case solved, with revenge as the likely motive,' Dzulkhairi said.

Cops: 49 probed, S$200,000 seized in Singapore-wide bust over crypto-linked laundering
SINGAPORE, June 12 — Singapore police are investigating 49 individuals suspected of being involved in money laundering activities using cryptocurrency accounts, following a recent island-wide crackdown. According to The Straits Times, the group, made up of 35 men and 14 women aged between 18 and 58, was rounded up during a series of operations conducted between May 13 and 30 by the Anti-Scam Command. Officers were supported by digital payments platform StraitsX, which helped flag suspicious activity. Over S$200,000 (RM660,000) has been seized so far. Preliminary findings suggest the suspects may have sold access to their cryptocurrency accounts or Singpass credentials for payments ranging from S$400 to S$3,000. Contact was often initiated via messaging apps such as Telegram or WhatsApp, through which unknown parties instructed them on how to proceed. These instructions reportedly included submitting screenshots, personal details, and login access, which were then exploited to channel proceeds from scams. In a statement today, police said their partnership with StraitsX 'enhanced capabilities to detect suspicious financial activities', ultimately leading to the identification of those under investigation. Authorities reiterated their zero-tolerance approach to money laundering. 'Anyone who allows their personal bank accounts or cryptocurrency accounts to be used to receive and transfer money or cryptocurrency for others will be held accountable if these transactions are linked to crimes,' police warned. They urged the public to be wary of offers that promise fast, easy money in exchange for the use of personal accounts and to reject such requests outright. Under Singapore law, those found guilty of helping someone retain benefits from criminal conduct can face up to three years in jail, a fine of up to S$50,000, or both.

August hearing for Najib's contempt proceedings against ex-AG
Najib Razak is pursuing contempt proceedings against former attorney-general Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh over the latter's alleged failure to reveal the existence of a royal decree allowing him to be placed under house arrest. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court has set Aug 19 to hear Najib Razak's application to cite former attorney-general (AG) Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh for contempt of court. The former prime minister wants the court to hold Terrirudin in contempt for his alleged failure to reveal the existence of a royal decree, made by the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the end of his tenure, placing Najib under house arrest. Justice K Muniandy said the present application, filed on May 21, was not caught by an earlier ruling halting all proceedings in the case pending the disposal of the current AG's appeal to the Federal Court. Justice Hayatul Akmal Aziz, who previously presided over the case, issued the order on April 28. 'The judge (Hayatul) has qualified herself to say that she is leaving it to the discretion of the succeeding judge. 'This court is bound by the earlier order which reflects the intention of the parties and the order. 'Therefore, the earlier order prevails, but it does not include the present contempt application,' he said. Muniandy took over the matter from Hayatul, who was elevated to the Court of Appeal on May 20. During submissions earlier this morning, senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan called for the court not to fix the application for hearing, arguing that it was caught by Hayatul's stay order. In reply, senior lawyer Shafee Abdullah contended that contempt proceedings were independent of the suit, and therefore not subjected to the order. 'So, a contempt application is definitely in a class of its own and it cannot be included within the so-called stay ordered by the court,' he said. On July 28, 2020, the High Court convicted Najib of seven charges and sentenced him to 12 years in prison and a fine of RM210 million. His subsequent appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court were dismissed. On Feb 2 last year, the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced that former king Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had halved Najib's prison sentence to six years, and reduced his fine to RM50 million. However, it made no mention of any decree allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. On Jan 6, Najib obtained leave from the Court of Appeal to begin judicial review proceedings to enforce the former king's decree. Najib is currently serving his reduced jail term at Kajang prison.
