Q&A: Azzi Fudd dishes on Paige Bueckers, UConn life, and more
UConn Huskies guard Azzi Fudd is up for the challenge that life brings. The Huskies star is entering her fifth season with head coach Geno Auriemma and the program. Under Auriemma's guidance, Fudd has numerous accolades to her name, including making the 2022 Big East All-Freshman Team and the 2025 First-team All-Big East team. Fudd also had a fantastic NCAA Tournament run with UConn this year as the program took home its 12th championship under Auriemma. During the tournament, she also earned Most Outstanding Player honors. As she prepares for the next phase in her hoops career, Fudd connected with Instagram and its Close Friends Only podcast to dive into her connection with Paige Bueckers, basketball, how she uses the app to stay connected to friends and more. Fudd told For the Win that she thought the whole experience would be fun and cool, and there was another thing that enticed her. "To do it with Paige [Bueckers] is another perk," she said. (We agree, Azzi Fudd. We agree.) For The Win chatted with Fudd about life at UConn, her favorite WNBA players, Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier (and, of course, Bueckers), plus what she really thinks about her famous "People's Princess" nickname. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. Why are Napheesa Collier and Paige Bueckers your favorite WNBA players? Are there any parts of their games that you would add to yours? Napheesa [Collier's] my favorite. I just think she is such a talented and skilled player and watching her play, it's just flawless. I would definitely take her footwork. She makes it look so easy, and I feel like no matter what ― she's one of those unguardable players because she always has a counter to what the defense is doing. There's nothing you can do to kind of stop her, which I love. ... You can tell she's a boss, and I love it. But she's also very chill throughout the game. And Paige [Bueckers], I love watching her play. I think she brings so much to the game, on both ends of the floor, and I love her energy and her passion that she plays with. You can tell how much she loves the game, but I definitely wouldn't take anything from a game because I'm better than her. [laughs] I would take her passing. She's a great passer. Do you feel any pressure now as the leader of UConn women's basketball? No, I don't feel any pressure. I'm excited. I think it's definitely gonna be a challenge for me because it's kind of outside of my comfort zone to use my voice as much. That's something I don't really do, but something that I know I need to work on. So, I love a challenge, and you know everyone's challenging me. So I gotta step up and do it. So I'm excited for that. Is there any advice that Geno Auriemma gave you about taking over? I think, you know, what the coaches have just been saying is, "You've been here the longest. You know what you're doing. You know what you're talking about. So trust that." What past UConn legends have shared wisdom with you? Sue [Bird] always has a bunch of wisdom, and I texted her about talking to her just to pick her brain, ask some questions, because when you think about leaders, I mean, UConn has created so many incredible basketball players. But I feel like when you think of one of the best generals, you think of her. So just picking her brain. I wanna pick her brain and ask her things and just how it was for her and how she's been able to be this incredible leader. We heard you like cooking videos. What's your best dish you would put up against anybody? My teammates make fun of me for everything I make because I'm healthy, and so they think everything is gross. Also, I only cook for myself. You know, when you cook for yourself, it's what you wanna eat and whatever. I feel like I love making breakfast. ... Or last year I made a bunch of salmon bowls, so with like quinoa, some sort of green, a grain, salmon and like other veggies on top. I'm also probably the biggest cottage cheese fan you'll ever meet. So I always put cottage cheese in whenever I'm eating, which is a hot take, but I'll stand by it any day of the week. But I do make a good salmon bowl. ...I feel like stir fry is another go-to. How do you feel about your "People's Princess" nickname? I mean I feel like when someone gives you a nickname, the odds it being a good nickname like this are very low like. I think this is a great nickname. I feel like there could be some really bad ones people came up with. So I'm, I'm happy that it was this. Will you continue using it this season? I have no idea. I don't talk about myself, I don't say like, "Oh,. I'm Azzi. You can call me the "people's princess." I don't say that. So [if] people continue to call me that, I won't be upset. But if people stop, then that's fine. Who is someone that you admire in women's college basketball that you feel like deserves more recognition? I'm gonna go with Ashlynn Shade and KK Arnold. I admire them a lot, and I feel like they could never have enough recognition for what they do and what they bring on and off the court for our team ― just the energy, the intensity and just the constant work ethic they have. I feel like they're two staples and a big part of the core of our team.

Fight breaks out, 3 ejected in Sun's win over Sky after Bria Hartley and Rebecca Allen get into it
Things completely erupted in a battle between the two worst teams in the WNBA on Wednesday night. A fight broke out in the second quarter of the Connecticut Sun's 71-62 win over the Chicago Sky at Mohegan Sun Arena on Wednesday night after Rebecca Allen and Bria Hartley got into it under the basket while fighting for a rebound. Those two, along with Sky guard Ariel Atkins, were all ejected. Neither player actually got the rebound, but Hartley threw Allen down to the ground hard as play started going the other way. Allen tried to grab Hartley's jersey to pull her down too, but she missed, and Hartley then stood over her appearing to taunt as players and coaches came in to try and break it up. Suddenly Atkins entered the skirmish, too, and she immediately shoved Hartley in an apparent retaliation effort. She was livid and had to be held back well after the two groups were separated. "It was unfortunate," Sky coach Tyler Marsh said. "Things like that have a tendency to happen when there's not a control put on the game prior to it. Sky star Angel Reese, who is out with a back injury, immediately supported Atkins on social media. Leïla Lacan led the Sun with 17 points and five assists in the win, which pushed them to 6-26 on the season. Tina Charles added 15 points, and Marina Mabrey had 10 points. The win snapped a five-game losing skid. Kamilla Cardoso led the Sky with 24 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Elizabeth Williams had 12 points and 15 rebounds. The Sky sit at 8-24 on the year, and have now lost three straight. Though both teams are well out of the playoff race, they will have a chance to run it back twice more before the regular season ends. Even though it won't mean anything, those two contests are sure to be heated after what went down Wednesday night.

But the teams that eventually make it to October still have some work to do before they get there. With that in mind… Here is one realistic goal that each of our top 10 teams should pursue from now until the end of the regular season, courtesy of Yahoo Sports' Jordan Shusterman. Brewers — Secure the best record in baseball: This, of course, should be the bare minimum expectation given Milwaukee's magical summer. More important is finding their way back to the NLCS or beyond for the first time since 2018. Phillies — Enter October with momentum: Since reaching the World Series in 2022, Philly's season has ended one round earlier each successive year. They've got the roster to reverse that trend; now they just need to go out and do it. Dodgers — Figure out who their 13 best pitchers are: On paper, this pitching staff is as loaded as it gets. But sifting through injuries and inconsistency to find the right mix of arms will be of paramount importance as they seek to repeat as champions. Blue Jays — Win the AL East for the first time in a decade: They've come a long way since last year's last-place finish and this spring's contract talks with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now all that's left is to secure what should be a raucous home-field advantage north of the border. Cubs — Restore juggernaut status as an offense: The North Siders' success in October will hinge on whether or not they can find the offensive firepower that carried them in the first few months of the season. Tigers — Secure a top-two seed in the AL: Despite recent stumbles, Detroit still figures to win its first division crown since 2014. But this is a team that would seriously benefit from earning a bye to ensure its top arms are rested and ready to roll. Astros — Reclaim full-blown villain status: The laundry list of injuries, most recently to closer Josh Hader, can't be overlooked. But with Carlos Correa back in the fold they look far more intimidating and far more familiar as the league's ultimate heel. Padres — Chase down the Dodgers: It's been almost 20 years since their last division title, but here they are on the doorstep of finally slaying the "dragon up the freeway," holding sole possession of first place after winning their fifth straight game on Wednesday. Mariners — Win the AL West for the first time since 2001: After winning an MLB record-tying 116 games, they vanished from the postseason for two decades. Now, just one game behind the Astros, is this the year they finally reclaim the crown? Red Sox — Finish ahead of the Yankees and make the playoffs: Missing the playoffs would make this the first time since the 90's that Boston failed to reach October in four consecutive seasons. For a team that spends this much money, that's simply inexcusable. Teams 11-30 📸 Through the lens Udine, Italy — Paris Saint-Germain staged a thrilling comeback against Tottenham to win their first UEFA Super Cup, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to tie the game before finishing the job in penalties. Another trophy: PSG have won the Super Cup, Champions League, Coupe de France, Ligue 1 and Trophée des Champions this year, with their only blemish coming in last month's Club World Cup final loss to Chelsea. Anaheim — Shohei Ohtani had his longest outing of the season (4.1 IP), struck out seven and tripled against his former team. But the Dodgers still fell to the Angels for their fourth straight loss, and for the first time since April 27 the defending champs are out of first place. Coming up: The Dodgers are off today, but this weekend they host a massive series against the Padres, who've taken advantage of their prolonged slide (10-14 since the break) to leapfrog them into first. Mason, Ohio — The weather has made for a challenging week at the Cincinnati Open, with multiple days delayed by storms and numerous players forced to retire due to extreme heat. But at least it gave us this gorgeous photo. San Francisco — The Olympic Club is a seriously stunning setting for the U.S. Amateur (yes, that is the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance), which opened match play on Wednesday. Highlights include 16-year-old Miles Russell and John Daly II both advancing to the Round of 32. 📈 NFL valuations: Business is booming The NFL long ago surpassed the imaginary threshold of being "too big to fail." Now it's just showing off. Business is booming: The average NFL team is worth $7.13 billion — a staggering sum and a 20% increase over last year according to Sportico's annual valuations, released on Wednesday. The Cowboys again lead the way at $12.8 billion. But after becoming the first team to cross the $10 billion threshold last year they're now joined by two others in the Rams ($10.43B) and Giants ($10.25B). 13 teams are worth at least $7 billion and even the last-place Bengals are worth $5.5 billion — more than every NHL team, all but four MLB teams and all but seven NBA teams. Big picture: If a 20% increase in a year sounds big (which it most certainly should), consider this: the average NFL franchise has more than doubled in value just since 2021.
