KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- Japan has lauded Malaysia, the 2024 ASEAN Chair, for its growing leadership in addressing regional security challenges.
Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Noriyuki Shikata said Tokyo reiterated strong support for Malaysia.
On the bilateral front, Shikata also highlighted the growing importance of Japan-Malaysia relations, spurred by the elevation of their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership last year.

He noted that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's decision to make Malaysia his first overseas visit in January this year further reflects the importance Tokyo places on its relationship with Kuala Lumpur.
The ambassador reaffirmed Japan's commitment to deepening its defence posture and working closely with Malaysia to safeguard regional peace and security, in line with a rules-based international order.
'In the face of unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force, particularly in the East and South China Seas, Japan is steadily advancing the fundamental reinforcement of our defence capabilities,' he said during the celebration of the 71st anniversary of Japan Self-Defence Forces (JSDF) Day, held at his official residence here on Tuesday evening.
Shikata said Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy - which aligns with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) - seeks to promote cooperation over conflict by upholding international law.
He said the JSDF play a vital role in supporting this vision by bolstering deterrence, improving response capabilities, and fostering deeper security collaboration.
On Japan-Malaysia security cooperation, he said the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force and the Royal Malaysian Navy have conducted three iterations of the bilateral exercise 'MALPAN' in the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea.

US holding peace talks with Iran, says special envoy
Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff attends a meeting in the Situation Room of the White House, in Washington, D.C., U.S., June 21, 2025. The White House/Daniel Torok/Handout via REUTERS THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY A THIRD PARTY. NEW YORK (Bernama-dpa): The US has begun talks with Iran on a permanent peace agreement, according to special envoy Steve Witkoff, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. Speaking on Fox News late Tuesday (June 24), Witkoff said that the talks are "promising." "We're already talking to each other, not just directly, but also through interlocutors," he said. The possible agreement would envisage Iran having a civilian nuclear programme but without the enrichment of uranium on Iranian territory, he said. Witkoff dismissed as "completely preposterous" media reports that the US attacks on Iran over the weekend had only set back the nuclear programme by a few months. The centrifuges at Natanz and Fordow were "damaged or destroyed in a way that it'll be almost impossible for them to resurrect that programme for - in my view and in many other experts' views who have seen the raw data - it will take a period of years," he said. On Tuesday, several US media outlets reported, citing an intelligence assessment, that only the entrances to the facility in Fordow, which was built deep into the mountain, had been destroyed, but not the underground buildings themselves. Destroying Iran's nuclear capability was the key stated war aim of Israel's government when it launched attacks on June 13. The US then joined the assault on the nuclear facilities with massive "bunker-busting" bombs. - Bernama-dpa

Chow-Ramasamy defamation mediation resumes July 2
P Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow Kon Yeow on July 18 last year over a Facebook post which he claims seriously harmed his reputation. GEORGE TOWN : The Penang Court Mediation Centre has fixed July 2 for a further mediation session between chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and former deputy chief minister P Ramasamy in connection with defamation proceedings linked to the disputed Batu Kawan land deal. Ramasamy's lawyer, Shamsher Singh Thind, confirmed that an e-review is scheduled for tomorrow before sessions court judge Helmi Ghani to provide an update on the proceedings. 'The new date was fixed as both parties need to confirm something. 'Today is the second mediation session after the first one on April 14,' he said. Chow also confirmed that mediation is ongoing, with the next session scheduled for July 2. 'Today's mediation involved defamation suits stemming from the cancelled land deal between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Umech Land Sdn Bhd. 'Ramasamy filed the first defamation suit against me, while PDC filed the second suit against him,' he said. Today's session was presided over by mediator S Selvaranjini, with V Sithambaram representing both Chow and PDC. The mediation concerns remarks made by Chow about the now-scrapped land transaction between PDC and Umech Land. Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow on July 18 last year over a statement published on the latter's official Facebook page on Oct 3, 2023, which Ramasamy alleged gravely damaged his reputation.

Kota MADANI in Precinct 19 not ‘Second Putrajaya'
PUTRAJAYA: The Kota MADANI development project, which is slated to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tomorrow, is not the 'Second Putrajaya' as claimed by certain parties, said Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud. Instead, it is part of the existing Putrajaya development master plan, he said. He added that the project is a continuation of the implementation of the Putrajaya project, which was outlined previously, involving the division of the area into 20 main precincts covering a total of 4,931 hectares. 'We stress that the development of this Kota MADANI is at Precinct 19, and it is situated inside the 4,931-hectare area of Putrajaya. Only that the context of the Precint 19 development, namely Kota MADANI, is in the form of compact development. 'For context, we have named Precinct 19 as Kota MADANI. We also have developers using a different name for marketing purposes. But Kota MADANI is situated in Precinct 19 of Putrajaya. That needs to be clarified, and it is not another Putrajaya,' he told Bernama and RTM here today. He also explained that compact development is a concept that enables various facilities, such as residences, schools, commercial spaces and public facilities to be built nearby within an area, thus reducing the need to travel far. Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has also taken to social media to explain that the Kota MADANI project is not a waste of public funds. She stressed that the project is being developed through a public-private collaboration by Putrajaya Holdings using the Build-Lease-Maintain-Transfer (BLMT) concept, with the RM4 billion cost of development fully borne by the developer. 'The developer will also bear the maintenance cost and, after 25 years, this whole project will belong to the government,' she said. In addition, she said the construction of Kota MADANI is necessary as it will provide 10,000 residential units for civil servants, especially with over 17,000 existing applicants still on the waiting list due to a shortage of housing units. As for the choice in naming the project, Dr Zaliha explained that 'MADANI' is not a political label, but instead carries the values ??of humanity, balance, justice and sustainability. Spanning 41.28 hectares, Kota MADANI is set to feature 10,000 high-density vertical residential units capable of accommodating over 3,000 residents. Its design will integrate artificial intelligence technology, efficient digital infrastructure and a green mobility system. The project begins with the development of its first phase, expected to commence in September, involving the construction of approximately 3,000 residential units and a vertical school, which is slated to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2027. The development of Kota MADANI is a long-term strategic investment to shape Putrajaya's future as a model city that upholds MADANI values and aligns with the vision of Bandar CHASE - a clean, healthy, advanced, safe and eco-friendly city.
