Chile observatory captures the universe with 3,200-megapixel camera

SANTIAGO - Chile's Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which boasts the world's largest digital camera, has begun displaying its first images of the cosmos, allowing astronomers to figure out how the solar system formed and even whether an asteroid poses a threat to Earth.
Located on Pachon Hill in the northern region of Coquimbo, the 8.4-meter (27-1/2-foot) telescope has a 3,200-megapixel camera feeding a powerful data processing system.
"It's really going to change and challenge the way people work with their data," said William O'Mullane, a project manager focused on data at Vera Rubin.
The observatory detected over 2,100 previously unseen asteroids in 10 hours of observations, focusing on a small area of the visible sky. Its ground-based and space-based peers discover in total some 20,000 asteroids a year.
O'Mullane said the observatory would allow astronomers to collect huge amounts of data quickly and make unexpected finds.
"Rather than the usual couple of observations and writing an (academic) paper. No, I'll give you a million galaxies. I'll give you a million stars or a billion even, because we have them: 20 billion galaxy measurements," he said.
The center is named after American astronomer Vera C. Rubin, a pioneer in finding conclusive evidence of the existence of large amounts of invisible material known as dark matter.
Each night, Rubin will take some 1,000 images of the southern hemisphere sky, letting it cover the entire southern sky every three or four nights.
The darkest skies above the arid Atacama Desert make Chile one of the best places worldwide for astronomical observation.
"The number of alerts the telescope will send every night is equivalent to the inboxes of 83,000 people. It's impossible for someone to look at that one by one," said astrophysicist Francisco Foster.

It is the sixth-largest cocaine haul found since records began. Border Force officers have seized 2.4 tonnes of cocaine with a value of almost £100 million in one of the biggest drugs busts in years. The enormous haul was found under containers on a ship arriving into London Gateway port from Panama, the Home Office said. Specialist officers detected the shipment earlier this month after carrying out an intelligence-led operation. With help from the port operator, they moved 37 large containers to get at the stash. Worth an estimated £96 million, it marks the sixth-largest cocaine seizure since records began. Meanwhile, a haul of 20 firearms, 320 rounds of ammunition, 170kg of ketamine and 4,000 MDMA pills have been found in a lorry at Dover Port. National Crime Agency investigators estimate the street value of the ketamine would have been around £4.5 million and £40,000 for the MDMA. The driver, a 34-year-old Tajikstan national, was arrested on suspicion of smuggling the illegal items.

Crop, Livestock Supply Stable Amid Hot, Dry Weather
SHAH ALAM, June 28 (Bernama) -- Crop and livestock supplies nationwide remain stable despite the ongoing hot and dry weather caused by the Southwest Monsoon, according to the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM). Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the ministry has not received any major complaints or reports of serious supply disruptions. There have been some complaints, but they are isolated and weather-related, whether due to floods or drought, he added. 'Overall, disruptions are minimal and the situation remains under control,' he told reporters after officiating the Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) @KPKM carnival here today. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) earlier reported that the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10, is expected to last until September. Separately, Mohamad said the coconut industry holds strong potential to become a key contributor to the national economy, similar to pineapples. He noted rising demand for both mature coconuts, which are being actively cultivated in Sabah, and young coconuts, especially from China. 'The crop is expected to generate impressive export value, just like pineapples, which have surpassed RM1 billion in sales,' he said. Mohamad had previously praised the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for driving national production and export growth in the sector.
