Hoërskool Marais Viljoen's rugby coach fresh from a match against Kenya

The Citizen6 hours ago

Hoërskool Marais Viljoen rugby coach, Shane Kirkwood, who is also the director of the Alberton Rugby Club, has just returned from co-captaining the Super Barbarians in their match against Kenya's 15s rugby team, the Simbas.
The match formed part of the Simbas' tour of South Africa and was played on Tuesday, June 24, in Nylstroom, Limpopo.
'Shane Kirkwood, a proud Marais Viljoen alumnus and current rugby coach at our school, has been selected as co-captain of the prestigious Super Barbarians rugby team,' said Hoërskool Marais Viljoen in a statement.
Kirkwood joined forces with his long-time friend and former Pumas teammate, Etienne 'Mot' Taljaard, for the game.
The Simbas, however, secured their second win of the South African tour, narrowly defeating the Super Barbarians 27–24 despite the Barbarians' determined performance.
'A special memory. Super Barbarians vs Kenya, 27–24 loss. Great effort,' said John Kirkwood after the match.

Austrian Grand Prix: FINAL grid positions after ALL driver penalties

Lando Norris delivered a superb final flying lap in his McLaren on Saturday to end Max Verstappen's run of domination in qualifying at the Red Bull Ring by claiming pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix. The race is due to start at 15:00 (SA time). The 25-year-old Briton clocked an outstanding lap in one minute and 3.971 seconds to outpace nearest rival Charles Leclerc of Ferrari by 0.521 seconds, with McLaren team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri third. Norris, who is 22 points behind Piastri in the drivers' title race, erased any hangover from his collision with Piastri in Canada two weeks ago with a thrilling demonstration of his speed and talent. Verstappen had taken pole position at the Red Bull-owned circuit in the Styrian Alps for the last five F1 races before Norris succeeded and seized his first pole in Austria, his third of the season and 12th of his career. Team-mate Piastri was disappointed and frustrated. 'I had (Pierre) Gasly spin at the first corner so I didn't even open my second lap. Lando's been very quick all weekend so it would have been a tough challenge, but we had the pace to be on the front row. 'We can still have a good race from there and we are not here to come home third.' Leclerc's team-mate and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was an encouraging fourth ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls, four-time champion Verstappen of Red Bull and Gabriel Bortoleto of Sauber. Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli was ninth in the second Mercedes and Gasly 10th. Johannesburg teen to represent SA at Youth World Climbing Championships in Finland

Roux Wentzel (14) from Helpmekaar Kollege in Johannesburg has recently been chosen to represent the South African Protea Climbing team at the International Federation of Sport Climbing Youth World Climbing Championships in July in Helsinki, Finland. The climber who began the sport two years ago said his latest accolade is a silver medal he received from last year's national championships, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reports. Roux explained the process of being selected: 'To be selected to compete at the Youth World Championships, you have to make the podium at the Youth World Championship selection event that was held in Johannesburg this year. 'For speed climbing specifically, you also have to make a cut-off time that depends on your category.' The climber said that because it would be his first year competing internationally, he did not have any goals in terms of how far he wanted to rank, but simply wanted to climb faster than he ever had and enjoy the experience.

Banyana camp dispute suggests SAFA still don't take women's football seriously

Taken for granted Banyana Banyana players are taken through their paces as they prepare for the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Image: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix The latest news coming out of the Banyana Banyana camp as they prepare to defend their Women's Africa Cup of Nations title is concerning, and fingers should once again be pointed at the South African Football Association. According to reports, the players boycotted a number of training sessions during the week as they had some outstanding payments. It's something that's not new in South African football. Prior to the previous tournament, in Morocco like this year's one, the players went on strike to let SAFA know they were not happy with the bonuses they would be getting for being at the competition. It was an ugly saga that never should have happened. To their credit, the team rose above the storm and came back home with the trophy. But that's a bit of a stretch. Addressing the situation, SAFA vice-president Linda Zwane said they had dealt with it 'swiftly.' 'It was made known to us. It's a minor issue. The payments of the previous games that they played, particularly the Malawi game, which the association had undertaken to address – that particular matter. 'So, there is an agreement that has been reached with the team through their captain [Refiloe Jane]. As far as we are concerned, that particular matter is now buried. The association has made commitments to address that, making sure that players continue with preparations.' That things got this far suggests SAFA care very little about the women's game. There is also the issue with head coach Desiree Ellis' contract, which has yet to be renewed after expiring in 2024. SAFA say 'the contract is in place but awaits guidance from the technical committee on a reappointment.' Surely this is something that should have been dealt with last year when they knew her contract would be up soon. It's hard to shake the feeling that Banyana Banyana's success is being taken for granted. The players have proven time and again that they can rise above adversity, but they shouldn't have to. If SAFA are serious about progress and pride in the women's game, then it must start treating these champions with the respect, planning, and professionalism they've more than earned. Anything less sends a clear message – that even triumph on the continental stage isn't enough to earn the basic dignity of proper support. South African football cannot continue to rely on the resilience of its women while failing them behind the scenes.
