Hoërskool Marais Viljoen's rugby coach fresh from a match against Kenya
Hoërskool Marais Viljoen rugby coach, Shane Kirkwood, who is also the director of the Alberton Rugby Club, has just returned from co-captaining the Super Barbarians in their match against Kenya's 15s rugby team, the Simbas. The match formed part of the Simbas' tour of South Africa and was played on Tuesday, June 24, in Nylstroom, Limpopo. 'Shane Kirkwood, a proud Marais Viljoen alumnus and current rugby coach at our school, has been selected as co-captain of the prestigious Super Barbarians rugby team,' said Hoërskool Marais Viljoen in a statement. Kirkwood joined forces with his long-time friend and former Pumas teammate, Etienne 'Mot' Taljaard, for the game. The Simbas, however, secured their second win of the South African tour, narrowly defeating the Super Barbarians 27–24 despite the Barbarians' determined performance. 'A special memory. Hoërskool Marais Viljoen learners' incredible display of athleticism
Learners from Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School have again proved why their school was declared the sports school of the year 2024 in the Ekurhuleni South District. During school holidays, they competed against other schools. Marais Viljoen's rugby, netball, and athletics teams were among the best during recently held matches and tournaments. Rugby: During the school holidays, the school's rugby team went on tour, and they came back as victors. The U16 rugby team won the Hansie Week Tournament in Mookgophong (formerly known as Naboomspruit), in Limpopo. Their visit saw Hoërskool Marais Viljoen's Josh O'Brien being named the best U16 player of the week. 'These boys showed incredible skill, teamwork, and determination throughout the week. A special shoutout to Josh,' the school said in a statement. Netball: After several rounds of trials, their netball teams' Hlengiwe Ngcobo (U18), Georja Joubert (U17), Za'Nyah Hartley (U15), Alida van Dyk (U17) and Nonhlanhla Sithebe (U15) were all selected to represent Gauteng at national level. The school released a congratulatory statement: 'We would like to congratulate these netball players on their exceptional performance and recognition at provincial level.' Athletics team: Hoërskool Marais Viljoen athletes brought four medals back to Alberton from the recently held SA Schools Athletics Championships in Bloemfontein, Free State. 'Competing against the country's best, they delivered exceptional performances. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, determination, and achievements,' said the school in a statement. Luanne du Plooy placed second in the 200m sprint (U17), Molefe Molefe placed second in the 400m (U17), Ashlynn Norman placed second in long jump (U17), Luanne du Plooy placed third in high jump (U17), Heylinn Nelson placed fourth in the 5000m walk (U15), Brandon Redgard placed fifth in 400m hurdles (U17) Ashlynn Norman placed fifth in the 100m sprint (17) and Janine Berry placed sixth in long jump (U17).
