Jeff Bezos Says The 'Hardest Thing' Was Landing Amazon's First Million, Says He Warned Potential Backers Of A '70% Chance' They'd Lose Their Money

Yahoo03-05-2025

Jeff Bezos says the toughest test of his career wasn't building a trillion‑dollar tech empire — it was scraping together Amazon's first million dollars.
What Happened: Speaking at The New York Times DealBook Summit in December 2024, the Amazon founder recalled 1995, when "to raise the first $1 million of seed capital for Amazon, I [Bezos] sold 20% of the company at a $5 million valuation... to 22 angel investors, roughly $50,000 each."
Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing —
He said it took 60 pitches to secure those checks. "The 40 'no's were hard‑earned 'no's... The whole enterprise could have been extinguished then." Potential backers' first question: "What's the Internet?" Bezos even warned prospects that there was a "70% chance they would lose their investment."
'It was the hardest thing I've ever done," he added.
The gamble aged well. Amazon's market capitalization hovers near $1.99 trillion today, according to TradingEconomics, making that early 20 percent stake, had it survived dilution, worth roughly $400 billion. A single $50,000 slice would be about $18 billion.
Bezos told moderator Andrew Ross Sorkin that the ordeal shaped Amazon's culture of persistence. "Conviction matters," he said, adding that overcoming early skepticism was "the hardest thing I've ever done."
Amazon, launched from a Seattle garage to sell books online, now spans cloud computing, streaming, groceries and artificial intelligence. Yet Bezos noted that success began with convincing two dozen believers when the Internet itself was a curiosity. "If those 22 had said no," he said, "none of this would exist."What To Know: Bezos, in the same talk, told DealBook that founders often "overestimate risks and underestimate opportunities," so he deliberately tilts the other way. What looks like confidence, he said, is really "compensating for that human bias." Thinking small, he added, is "a self‑fulfilling prophecy" — act modestly and your results will match.
Bezos, at the time, also sounded upbeat about Donald Trump's second term as president, saying lighter regulation could spur business. He urged Washington to pair spending restraint with faster growth, aiming for 3‑5 percent annual GDP gains so the national debt rises more slowly than the economy.

The last-mile entrepreneur: How a Bay Area business owner turned Amazon deliveries into success

In August 2020, a customer came into Ronald Dubon's mechanic shop and asked him to repair an Amazon delivery truck. After completing the job, the customer mentioned that he had many more trucks needing service if Dubon could handle them. 'My eyes went big,' Dubon remembers. 'I thought I was coming up on an Amazon contract to fix vehicles.' But soon, Dubon discovered a different opportunity. The customer explained that Amazon doesn't operate the ubiquitous vans that take packages from its warehouses and deliver them to customers' homes. Instead, it contracts with more than 4,400 independent logistics companies to handle last-mile delivery. Dubon, who owned a delivery company of his own, was intrigued. He completed an online application for Amazon's Delivery Service Partner program the next day. He moved quickly through Amazon's interview process and, by October, was taking delivery of a fleet of 20 vehicles to launch his business. 'My life changed in that moment,' he said. expand Inside Amazon's DSP program Turning his Inner City Logistics business into an Amazon DSP was relatively simple, Dubon said. Amazon negotiates with vendors that supply most of the equipment DSPs need to purchase for their businesses, such as Amazon-branded vans, uniforms and handheld devices. The company also offers access to various optional business services, such as insurance, accounting and payroll software. Amazon's commitment to its DSPs is growing, too. In September 2024, the company announced it plans to incrementally invest more than $2.1 billion in the DSP program. It plans to spend the money on safety programs, rate cards, training, value-added services, incentives and other areas to support the businesses that handle its last-mile deliveries. 'I was awarded contracts with other logistics companies in the past, but it was like, 'Do you want a contract? Do you have a truck? OK, bring the truck and start running loads the next day,' Dubon said. 'The vetting process with Amazon is just a different world. When I started seeing all of these things and the level of the structure, I knew I was onto something that was going to be the future.' Today, Inner City Logistics ranks among Amazon's top-performing DSPs. Dubon's team of more than 100 employees operates 38 Amazon routes across San Francisco, Milpitas, San Jose and Fremont, scaling to as many as 100 routes during peak periods. Discovering the recipe for business success Amazon's training, structure and support to its DSPs has benefitted Dubon's other entrepreneurial efforts, including L'Roco Grill, a Salvadoran restaurant in San Jose. Dubon's wife, Lady Ruiz, runs the restaurant and handles backend responsibilities for Inner City Logistics. 'I used to operate businesses with a fear that came from not knowing if what we were doing was right or wrong because we didn't have that guidance,' he said. 'We learned a lot about how to run a good business. It's been a big change.' Amazon's training also underscored the importance of intentionally building your company culture to serve two types of customers: external customers who purchase goods and services and internal customers who work for your business, Dubon said. 'That concept alone makes a huge difference on how you walk into your building and how you treat people,' he said. 'Not only the people who come in to spend money at your business but also your employees because, ultimately, they are your clients. You need to make them both happy.' Elevating entrepreneurship Dubon's passion for entrepreneurship and professional development extends beyond his businesses. He's helped one employee go on to open his own DSP business, and two more are on their way to doing the same. Dubon has become a champion for Road to Ownership, an accelerated training program Amazon offers to help high-performing DSP employees become DSP owners. The 16-week program includes classroom-style training and mentorship by a successful DSP owner. People who graduate from Road to Ownership receive a $30,000 grant to help them launch their businesses. 'I pride myself on developing the best people and taking them up to the next level,' Dubon said. 'We've done that in the restaurant business, too, my wife and I. This is what I love doing.' The first person Dubon mentored through the Road to Ownership program was Jose Mejia, who started working for Inner City Logistics as a helper supporting the company's drivers. He moved up through the company quickly, serving as a driver, then a trainer, dispatcher and operations manager. 'This is probably the guy with the best work ethic that I've ever met,' Dubon said. 'He is an extremely amazing guy, and I thought he deserved an opportunity for something even better.' Mejia has continued his professional growth. He received a Rising Star award from Amazon for having the best DSP launch in 2023. Today, he has close to 100 employees in the Sacramento region. It is a success story Dubon said he hopes to help repeat by supporting more entrepreneurs. 'I have a motto in my company,' Dubon said. 'I want you to come to my company as a driver, but if you leave, I want you to leave as a business owner.'

Diversification Strategy Sparks Bullish Impetus in Nebius Group Stock (NBIS)

When I first invested in Nebius Group (NBIS) earlier this year, I approached it with cautious optimism—hyper-growth stocks carry inherent risk. Today, with the stock up over 50%, I remain confident and recently raised my 12-month price target to $60, implying further upside of over 50%. Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter While its EV/Sales multiple above 50x may appear steep, it's less relevant for a vertically integrated AI infrastructure leader positioned to capitalize on current momentum. In my view, Nebius remains one of the most compelling growth stories in tech today. Nebius's recent growth is off the charts. Nebius posted exceptional growth in Q1 FY2025, reporting $55.3 million in revenue—a 385% year-over-year increase—driven by surging global demand for AI and generative computing solutions. Management projects annual recurring revenue (ARR) between $750 million and $1 billion by year-end, underscoring the company's ambitious trajectory. What sets Nebius apart is its diversified, vertically integrated approach. Beyond its core AI cloud services, the company operates in several high-growth areas: Avride, an autonomous mobility venture; Toloka, a data-labeling and AI development platform backed by Jeff Bezos's venture arm; and TripleTen, an edtech startup focused on tech career reskilling. This strategic breadth positions Nebius to tap into multiple revenue streams within the expanding AI ecosystem. While some still associate the company with its Yandex origins, Nebius has taken definitive steps to establish its independence, restructuring in 2022, relocating its headquarters to Amsterdam, and relisting on Nasdaq. Its $700 million funding round in December, led by investors including NVIDIA and Accel, affirms growing confidence in Nebius as a credible and emerging leader in global AI infrastructure. While Nebius continues to invest aggressively, it is beginning to demonstrate operating leverage. In the same quarter that delivered standout revenue growth, the company reduced its adjusted EBITDA loss from $70.9 million a year ago to $62.6 million—an encouraging sign of improving cost efficiency. A year ago, operating expenses stood at an unsustainable 827% of revenue; that figure has since declined to 334%. Though still high, the downward trend points toward greater operational discipline. Nebius's cloud-based model is inherently scalable, allowing margins to expand as revenue grows and fixed costs are spread across a larger customer base. Management is targeting adjusted EBITDA profitability in the second half of FY2025—a goal that appears increasingly attainable given the company's accelerating top-line growth and improving cost structure Let's tackle the elephant in the room—valuation. Based on an EV/Sales multiple of approximately 50x, Nebius appears expensive. For reference, Snowflake (SNOW) had a near-peak multiple of around 150x EV/Sales in early 2021 and fell rapidly to around 20x as revenues scaled. It's reasonable to expect Nebius's valuation will experience a similar development. Currently, Nebius stock exhibits extreme bullishness, as indicated by technical indicators, including the 14-day RSI, which stands at around 70. High volatility and irrational exuberance are typical among rapidly growing stocks, so investors should prepare for volatility, even when it's unlikely or difficult to ascertain, by examining the stock's price performance relative to its peers. Sentiment is always a risk with highly valued hyper-growth plays. However, when I consider the company's peers, Databricks or CoreWeave, Nebius's valuation is not entirely out of sync with the valuation models I commonly see across the AI infrastructure space. High multiples today can come back to earth in the near future as revenues move on up, making the current premium worthwhile. On Wall Street, Nebius has a consensus Strong Buy rating based on three Buys, zero Holds, and zero Sells. The average NBIS stock price target of $52.33 indicates a 37% upside potential over the next 12 months. However, if it reaches $60, we're looking at a return of over 50% within 12 months. I continue to view Nebius stock as one of the more compelling high-growth opportunities in today's market. While the stock may appear volatile and expensive by traditional metrics, its strong revenue growth, improving margins, strategic geopolitical positioning, and diversified revenue streams justify the current valuation. I maintain a bullish price target of $60, reflecting my confidence in management's execution capabilities and the potential for a favorable macro environment next year. For investors seeking high-risk, high-reward opportunities, Nebius stands out as a resilient and promising player in the AI space.
