Special task force gets 30 days for initial FRU crash report
In a statement today, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the task force commenced its investigation into the May 13 accident last week.
The task force comprises various experts and representatives from key agencies, and is chaired by the MOT's Chief Air Accident Inspector, Brigadier General Tan Chee Kee.
Its members include Simpang Renggam MP Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad; Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin; Prof Dr Kulanthayan K.C. Mani @ Subramaniam of Universiti Putra Malaysia; independent engineering expert Datuk Foong Choy Chye; as well as representatives from the Road Transport Department, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Armed Forces.
'MOT will ensure that every recommendation and finding submitted by the task force is thoroughly reviewed for appropriate follow-up at both policy and operational levels,' he said.
He added that the task force was established to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the root cause of the incident, including identifying any systemic weaknesses in road safety measures.
'They must also reassess existing guidelines, infrastructure and the application of safety technologies to help prevent similar incidents in the future,' he said.
He stressed that the primary objective of the investigation is not to assign blame but to identify and address deficiencies in the current system.
'This includes proposing systematic and effective improvement measures to ensure the safety of road users, particularly concerning heavy vehicles,' he said.
The nine FRU personnel from Unit 5 Ipoh were killed in the fatal crash along Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam at 8.50 am, while the convoy was returning from duty during the Chitirai Pournami celebration in Teluk Intan.
Eight died at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital.

KUALA LUMPUR: The police Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) Intelligence Unit raided two premises selling electronic cigarettes illegally in Kangar, Perlis, seizing goods worth RM315,900 on Friday. Federal police Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the Integrated Operation Op Taring Alpha 3 was conducted together with the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) in the district. He said the raid followed intelligence and public complaints over the illegal sale of e-cigarettes in the state. "The first raid was carried out in Kampung Baru, Kangar, where 2,083 units of devices and electronic cigarette liquids of various brands worth RM104,150 were seized. "The second raid in Kampung Padang Behor, Kangar, resulted in the seizure of 4,235 units of devices and electronic cigarette liquids of various brands worth RM211,750," he said in a statement. Azmi said the total number of items seized was 6,318 units valued at RM315,900. "MPK issued offence notices and compound offers to the premises caretakers for violations under the Local Government Act 1976. "All the seized items were believed to be intended for sale despite the Perlis government having enforced a ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes and vape liquids since Aug 1," he said. He added that the operation was carried out under the "reform" approach, a collaboration of expertise across various agencies to maximise enforcement effectiveness. "Police together with related agencies will continue to conduct operations periodically to curb the sale of illegal vape and safeguard community wellbeing," he said.

AGC warns Malaysians against vigilantism in Jalur Gemilang offence after Umno Youth's Kepala Batas protest
The AGC says members of the public must not assume the role of the authorities, such as ordering the removal of flags or seizing materials without legal power. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has today warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over Umno Youth's protest in Kepala Batas, Penang over the matter. The AGC said such actions could include raiding premises, spreading personal details, or making unfounded accusations on social media. 'The Chambers also reminds the public not to take matters into their own hands against anyone suspected of such acts,' it said in a statement here. The AGC also warned the public against provoking or issuing threats against the individuals or organisations concerned. It added members of the public must not assume the role of the authorities, such as ordering the removal of flags or seizing materials without legal power. All complaints or related information should instead be channelled to the relevant authorities for appropriate action, it said. It cited several recent incidents including the Malaysian flag being mounted upside down at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, at a school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, and the depiction of an incomplete Malaysian flag in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination result slip. Other examples included the depiction of an incomplete Malaysian flag on the official social media accounts of news publications Harian Metro, Sin Chew Daily, and Kwong Wah Yit Poh. 'The Chambers emphasises that all parties are responsible for respecting the Malaysian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty, and for complying with all laws and guidelines in force governing its use. 'Any offence involving the improper mounting or display of the Malaysian flag, which could cause confusion, misunderstanding, or public unrest, may be subject to legal action,' it said. Earlier, DAP instructed its youth wings nationwide to lodge police reports against the Umno Youth protest under Section 503 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements conducing to public mischief.
