Could a special vitamin D3 boost ease core autism symptoms in children?
While standard vitamin D3 supplements increased blood levels without affecting behaviour, the nanoemulsion version — a next-generation supplement — delivered measurable clinical benefits over six months. The findings are detailed in a peer-reviewed study titled 'Improved core manifestations of autism following supplementation with vitamin D3-loaded nanoemulsion', published in Nutrients.
What is autism pectrum disorder (ASD)?
Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental condition affecting how individuals communicate, interact, and behave. It usually manifests in early childhood and can range from mild to severe.
According to the World Health Organization, about 1 in 100 children globally has autism. A 2024 paper in Indian Pediatrics estimated that approximately 1 in 68 Indian children are affected.
Why is vitamin D3 important for children with autism?
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin produced naturally when skin is exposed to sunlight. It is essential for calcium regulation and bone health, but it also plays a role in brain development and immune system function.
The study highlighted that many children with autism have lower-than-normal vitamin D3 levels. Previous research on supplementation yielded inconsistent behavioural results — until now.
What makes the nanoemulsion form different?
The clinical trial involved 80 children diagnosed with ASD, split into two groups. One received standard vitamin D3; the other, a nanoemulsion formulation — an ultra-fine oil-and-water mix designed for superior absorption.
After six months, only the nanoemulsion group showed:
Significantly higher vitamin D3 levels
Reduced autism severity
Improvements in social and adaptive behaviours
Enhanced receptive and expressive language skills
Researchers noted that nanoemulsions improve bioavailability, allowing nutrients to be absorbed more efficiently into the bloodstream than conventional supplements.
Could this be a breakthrough in autism care?
According to the authors, nanoemulsion technology may become a promising, non-invasive intervention for managing neurodevelopmental disorders like autism. However, they caution that larger studies with longer follow-ups are necessary to confirm these benefits.
Should parents consider D3 nanoemulsions for autistic children?
Dr Astik Joshi, Child, Adolescent & Forensic Psychiatrist at Veda Clinic, Delhi, and Fortis Shalimar Bagh, said the findings are encouraging, but families must proceed with guidance.
'Vitamin D is vital for brain development and function — including neuroprotection, neurotransmission, and cognition,' he said. 'But before changing any supplement routine, parents should consult a developmental specialist and test vitamin D levels. Personalised care is crucial.'
How should vitamin D3 be integrated into autism care?
While promising, vitamin D3 is not a standalone cure. Experts stress that it should be integrated into a comprehensive, individualised care plan that may include:

2 Indian aquanauts make record-breaking dives into Atlantic Ocean
In preparation for the country's Deep Ocean Mission, two Indian aquanauts have undertaken dives to nearly 4,000 metres and 5,000 metres in the Atlantic Ocean, on board the French vessel, Nautile. These are the deepest ocean dives ever made by Indians, with most submarine dives being restricted to above 500 metres, and a previous record of 670 metres being set by aquanaut Commander (Retd) Jatinder Pal Singh. The dives took place on August 4 and 5. While Singh descended 5,002 metres, R Ramesh descended to 4,025 metres. An Indian flag, along with a French one, was floated during the dive. From deployment to retrieval, the mission to travel to the depths of 5,000 metres took about 9.5 hours. 'It took about two and a half hours to reach the depth. Once there, I spent around four hours at the depth working with the robotic arm, checking how to work with and without the light at a place where there is never any sunlight, how to work with the life support system if the CO2 systems are shut off, what has to be done in case of power failure, or how long will it take for the vessel to reach the surface in case of an emergency,' said Singh, who was a Naval submarine pilot. The experience from the two dives would help India's upcoming Samudrayaan mission. India plans to build its vessels to send three aquanauts to the depths of 6,000 metres by 2027. 'These dives was meant for our team to gain hands on experience on several aspects of such deep sea missions such as pre-dive preparatory tasks, piloting the vessel, ascending, descending and living in the vessel, using the robotic manipulator to collect samples from the outside, tracking the vessel, and retrieving it after the mission,' said Dr M Ravichandran, Secretary, Department of Earth Sciences. Another important learning from the dives was on communication protocols with the use of acoustic telephones. 'Thousands of metres underwater, you cannot use normal communication methods. Our phones use air as a medium to transmit radio waves to enable communication; these cannot penetrate the depth of water. So, for underwater communication, sound waves are used, and there is a delay of a few seconds in that,' Ravichandran said. The collaboration with France came after years of negotiation, as most countries are reluctant to share deep-sea technologies. In fact, India developed its own acoustic phones and will manufacture the titanium sphere that will carry the aquanauts. 'For depths of 6,000 metres, a titanium sphere will be needed for the crew. This sphere is currently being manufactured by the Indian Space Research Organisation,' he said, adding that it requires highly specialised and precise manufacturing techniques. He explained that the sphere has to be of 80mm thickness uniformly, 'even if at one place it is 79.8 mm thick, it will collapse under the immense pressure'. Under the Samudrayaan mission, a shallow water dive up to 500 metres—using a steel sphere instead of the more complex titanium one—is likely to take place in mid-2026. The integration of the titanium sphere and deep water testing is likely to occur by mid-2027, before the final mission scheduled for 2027-28.

Humane solution to street dogs: It's as simple as ABC
About 14 millennia ago, somewhere in Europe and probably simultaneously elsewhere, a unique bond developed between humans and wolves. Provided with scraps of food when approaching the early encampments and settlements of man, the wolf soon became a frequent and welcome visitor, warning man of imminent danger and later assisting him in the hunt for wild animals. Thus, began the domestication of the dog and the establishment of a bond between man and animals that has no equal. Today, man violates that bond by allowing dogs to breed excessively and then abandoning them in great numbers, thus creating hazards for the dogs themselves as well as a considerable health risk to human society. In 1990, Dr K Bogel, chief veterinarian of the World Health Organization (WHO) said: 'All too often, authorities confronted with the problems caused by these dogs have turned to mass destruction in the hope of finding a quick solution, only to discover that the destruction had to continue, year after year, with no end in sight'. Moreover, by reducing temporarily the population of free-roaming dogs, the authorities had improved the chances of survival of the remainder and provided fresh opportunities for newly-abandoned dogs. It is now becoming recognised that removal of surplus dogs cannot solve the problem unless combined with other measures such as registration and neutering of dogs and education of the public The Blue Cross of India in Chennai was the first to start sterilisation programmes for street dogs--indeed it was the first to propose such a programme and set up its first free clinic in 1966. Thirty years later in 1996, they were able to convince the Chennai Corporation headed by M Abul Hassan, IAS, regarding the viability of such an approach. We called it the ABC programme to show the authorities that control of the street dog population was as simple as ABC. The Blue Cross of India took up the total funding and was soon joined by People for Animals led by Maneka Gandhi. The Corporation's only expense was to continue to provide the dog-catching staff and vehicles. The number of cases of rabies which had been rising every year and had reached a high of 120 reported cases in 1996 began a steady decline and by 2007 it had dropped to zero. After three successive years of zero rabies, Chennai was declared rabies-free in 2010--the first metropolis in India to achieve this. Jaipur had also reached zero even earlier after starting a similar programme in 1996. Seeing the success of ABC-AR in Chennai and Jaipur, the Government of India's Animal Welfare Board adopted ABC-AR as its policy and recommended the Government to adopt it. Things moved swiftly and Parliament approved the ABC Rules in 2001 which stopped the poisoning or electrocution of street dogs and made ABC mandatory for all local bodies. With increased awareness and vaccination drives, rabies cases dropped by over 95% from WHO's 29,000 in 1996 to about 500 in 2024. Sadly, most municipalities did not implement ABC aggressively to reach the 70% coverage which would have stabilised the population. Sporadic ABC camps will not suffice. Since catching street dogs is the most traumatic part of the programme, many animal welfare groups supported street dog feeders only to get them to befriend the dogs so that they could be easily caught and sterilised and vaccinated. Many feeders, unfortunately, stopped with the feeding part and just began to dump newborn puppies at animal shelters. Armchair critics and keyboard warriors, in the meantime, instead of helping those groups struggling with overloaded shelters and large numbers of sterilisations, just kept using the double-edged sword of social media to find fault with what municipalities and local organisations were doing. The onset of Covid stopped most ABC programmes for well over a year, undoing years of work and virtually bringing everything back to square one. Having said all this, the recent order of the Supreme Court is totally impossible to implement. Putting captured street dogs into massive pounds will lead to massive and unbelievable cruelty. Such an experiment was tried out by a group called EAST in Taipei about 25 years ago. Virtually every dog of the thousands put in died due to infighting and unequal feeding--a clear case of the survival only of the fittest--till infections killed these too. Fortunately, a Buddhist monk who took over the organisation convinced the government to stop this inhuman practice and go in for an ABC programme. The Supreme Court order also goes against the ABC Rules and the orders of another two-judge bench. The order was also passed without giving a chance for other stakeholders to be heard. No municipality has the space or the funds required to run such pounds--euphemistically referred to as shelters. That ABC-AR works is not in doubt. Indeed, in Radford University's Milestones in World Environmental History ( , the ABC programme of the Blue Cross of India is listed as one of the milestones, right after Jane Goodall, in 1959. Let all of hope that better sense prevails and the three-judge bench formed by the Chief Justice of India, following protests from all over the country, puts the onus on all local bodies to fulfil their mandate of properly carrying out aggressive ABC programmes--the only viable solution to this important issue. Just as we have reduced rabies to a minor fraction over the last quarter century, a few years of an aggressive, sustained ABC-AR programme all over the country will ensure this. Let us be very honest about this--urban human population densities and road traffic make life for the dogs on the street difficult, too. But, as the nation that gave the world the word and the concept of ahimsa, and where Section 51(a)(g) of our Constitution requires us to show compassion to all life, we all have the moral obligation to tackle this issue in the most humane way possible.
