Undermanned and all, San Miguel still managed to beat Blackwater in a dominant fashion 115-78, as the Beermen claimed solo third spot in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup on Sunday at the PhilSports Arena.
The Beermen turned up the heat in the third quarter to pull away for good despite missing the services of several key players in Marcio Lassiter, Juami Tiongson, and Jeron Teng.
With the absence of the three, CJ Perez, June Mar Fajardo, and Don Trollano stepped up as the Beermen now broke the tie with Barangay Ginebra to rise to solo third with a 6-2 card.
Perez waxed hot early on, dropping 16 of his overall output in the first half to allow San Miguel to mount a 52-39 halftime lead as Christian David and RK Ilagan showed the way for the Bossing.
But the Beermen stepped on the gas in the third frame, which they opened with a sizzling 11-0 run capped by a massive four-point shot by Trollano as they zoomed to a 63-39 cushion.
Trollano would lead another 15-6 rampage with Chris Ross and JM Calma contributing to the breakaway, 78-45. They ended the penultimate period enjoying an 86-57 advantage as Blackwater only scored 18 in that juncture.
Perez finished with 20 points while Fajardo churned out a double-double outing of 17 markers and 13 rebounds laced with two blocks and one assist.
Trollano and Ross tallied 15 and 11 points apiece as Calma put together 16 points off the bench together with six rebounds as he provided the help to Fajardo and Mo Tautuaa.
David and Ilagan led the struggling Blackwater with the former collecting 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists while the latter poured in 14 markers, four rebounds, and five dimes as they absorbed their fifth loss in a row for a 1-7 record.
