Cheers! San Miguel's Tiongson, Cahilig, Rosales, Calma celebrate first PBA title

It took them a while, but finally, they can call themselves PBA champions. Last Friday, Juami Tiongson, Andreas Cahilig, Kris Rosales, and JM Calma relished their first title as the San Miguel Beermen defeated TNT in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals. Tiongson, Cahilig, and Rosales have been in the PBA for quite a while. Tiongson was drafted in 2014, while Rosales made his PBA debut in 2016. Cahilig, meanwhile, entered the league in 2017. "It means more to me. Obviously, with everything I went through in my career. Baka nung nag-start ang career ko, nawala ako sa PBA," Tiongson said. "I made it back and glory to God, and hopefully, win more championships," he added. ? Cahilig, who was also Tiongson's teammate back in Terrafirma, echoed the same sentiment. "It feels very good, I'm very happy. It's been a hard couple of years but it finally paid out," he said. Although Cahilig was able to play in two games only because of his hyperextended knee, the Filipino-Swedish big man said he is now more motivated after winning his first title. "I'm very hungry to play in the finals again," he added. "It's been like 10 years, four or five teams, so this one means a lot to me," Rosales said. "This is one of my goals in my career and I'm able to achieve it with San Miguel." "There's a lot of stuff that I did behind the scenes to get to this point and for me to get this, it really means a lot," Rosales said, especially after revealing he almost retired during the pandemic. "It's really dear to my heart and hopefully I can get some more." ? Kris Rosales, also a first time champion @gmasportsph — JK Carandang (@jk_carandang) July 25, 2025 Calma, while relatively new in the league being drafted in 2022, said this is the first trophy in his career. "Unang-una, sobrang saya, di mo ma-express 'yung feeling, sobrang sarap," the former San Sebastian big man said. "First time ko rin mag-champion sa career ko. Thank you sa San Miguel, binigyan ako ng opportunity para mag-champion." ? Gallo to shut California winery

US-headquartered Gallo is planning to close its Courtside Cellars winery in Saint Louis Obispo County, California. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice filed by the Barefoot winemaker confirmed the closure of the site. The move is expected to impact 47 employees. The site on Mission Street, San Miguel, will close permanently on 8 September, according to the official WARN filing. Just Drinks has contacted the company for additional details on the winery closure in California and what wines were produced at the facility. The winemaker bought the Courtside Cellars site in 2012. The facility was a 34 acres at the time and had the capacity to crush 60,000 tons of grapes The move was intended to support the company's continued growth in California's Central Coast. Gallo had also purchased 300 acres of vineyards in Monterey County earlier that year. Last year, the group sold another California site, the Wild Horse winery, to Continental Wine Collection. The deal included the 'real estate and equipment', but not the brand, the group said at the time. A month later, Gallo also sold two wineries based in Washington state in 2024 to local peer Ackley Brands. The US wine giant offloaded Columbia Winery and Hogue Cellars for an undisclosed sum. Seattle-based Ackley Brands agreed to buy the facilities, stock and equipment of both wineries. A Gallo spokesperson said at the time: 'As a company, Gallo continually evaluates our operating models. We have made the business decision to sell both properties, as well as the related brands, Columbia Winery and Hogue Cellars, to Ackley Brands, a family-owned company based in Seattle.' 'This will allow a local Pacific Northwest wine group with a growing portfolio to move forward with building brand equity and customer relationships on a local, regionalised basis.' Calvin Oftana doubtful for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup

Calvin Oftana's health status puts his availability for Gilas Pilipinas in doubt ahead of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. National team head coach Tim Cone revealed on Monday that Oftana is uncertain to suit up after the sharpshooter sustained injuries during TNT's finals series against San Miguel in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. Oftana hurt both of his ankles in the grueling finals clash as the Tropang 5G eventually fell to the Beermen in six games. "We're not sure about Calvin. The medical reports are that he might be out a little bit longer," Cone said following Gilas' 103-98 win over the Macau Black Bears in a friendly encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. "We were given a medical report from his camp so we're not sure if he's going to be available for the whole tournament." Cone, though, isn't worried about the manpower shortage with his trusted wards in Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos ready to step in whenever necessary. "We're gonna try to address that today or tomorrow and we got Troy and RJ in the wings to step in if necessary," Cone added. Cone also added that June Mar Fajardo, who sat out the send-off showdown against Macau, will take another three-day off before rejoining physical activities once they land in Jeddah, where they will figure in another friendly game against Jordan before the Asia Cup proper. "But June Mar, we expect him to start practicing when we land in Jeddah," Cone shared. "He changes the game for us, we have to play a different way with June Mar on the floor and that's the only concern because we haven't had practice time with him. We'll see what's going on with him." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

PBA: Chot Reyes says TNT has nothing to be ashamed of even as Grand Slam quest falls short

The TNT Tropang 5G's Grand Slam hopes may have slipped away, but for head coach Chot Reyes, the journey was nothing short of commendable. The multi-titled tactician praised his players for enduring a grueling PBA season, one that saw them capture the Governors' Cup and Commissioner's Cup before falling short in the season-ending Philippine Cup against San Miguel. "So, so proud of this team. I think our chairman MVP put it best, he said, 'Our heads bowed in sorrow but not in shame,'' Reyes said following their 107-96 loss in Game 6 on Friday. "I told the players hindi biro yung ginawa natin na nagtatlong finals tayo and we won two of them. There's absolutely no bitterness in my heart. Like we said, time for the players to rest, 75 games is no joke in one year." [I told the players what we did was no joke, making three finals and we won two of them. There's absolutely no bitterness in my heart. Like we said, time for the players to rest, 75 games is no joke in one year.] It has been a difficult campaign for TNT with a string of injuries ultimately derailing their Grand Slam bid. They first lost the backcourt tandem of Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac before another guard in Simon Enciso and veteran big man Poy Erram also joined the injury list, leaving TNT with a thin lineup heading into the finals. Still, they kept up with the Beermen, drawing first blood with a slim 99-96 win in Game 1. They, however, lost the next three games before mounting a huge fight in Game 5 to extend their life and drag San Miguel to a Game 6. But San Miguel proved too much for the undermanned Tropang 5G, as the Beermen made sure to close out the series and deny TNT any chance at a comeback. Reyes, though, stressed there were no regrets despite missing out on the historic Grand Slam. "I have absolutely no regrets. Like I said, when we started the series, I never coached for the Grand Slam. I'd rather almost have it than not get there. Okay na sa akin 'yun, palagi akong muntik muntik, okay na sa akin 'yun," he added. "I'm sure there are 10 other coaches in the league who would be in my position. Okay na sa'kin yun, pamuntik muntik, at least umaabot ako doon. I'll take that pain anytime." [I have absolutely no regrets. Like I said, when we started the series, I never coached for the Grand Slam. I'd rather almost have it than not get there. That's okay with me, always coming close, that's okay with me… I'm sure there are 10 other coaches in the league who would be in my position. That's okay with me, coming close. At least, I reached that point. I'll take that pain anytime.] —JMB, GMA Integrated News

'Unexpected' Finals MVP award just a bonus for Jericho Cruz

(Photo: PBA Media) San Miguel's Jericho Cruz has been one of the names usually heard over the course of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals series. His name has been involved in a post-game fuss back in Game 3 of the finals where he was allegedly 'showboating' in which he denied. But more than that, Cruz has been one of the consistent players for the Beermen for the finals series as he finished with 13.83 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.33 assists per game to help San Miguel win the All-Filipino crown. With his strong showing in the series, Cruz was named as the Most Valuable Player of the finals which is the first in his career. For him, it was an unexpected one and was just cherry on top of the championship. "Yung championship na 'to, sobrang sarap kasi kakabalik lang ni Coach Leo [Austria]. Nanalo rin ako ng award which is bonus lang naman. 'Di ko maisip, 'di ko maipinta ang words na dapat sabihin ko ngayon," Cruz said in the post-game conference. "'Di ko in-expect pero binigay sa akin kaya maraming salamat," he said in a separate interview. He also clarified that there is no bad blood with him and TNT officials such as manager Jojo Lastimosa. "Shoutout pa rin sa Talk 'N Text kasi hard fought series. Shout out din kay Coach Jolas, alam niya naman na mahal ko 'yan, and Coach Chot [Reyes]... At the end of the day, it's just basketball. Tapos na 'yun, move on na and prepare for the next conference," he said. After a grueling series, Cruz is also expected to join Guam in the FIBA Asia Cup. However, he revealed having some knee issues and will still determine if he will join the tournament. "Pag-isipan ko in the next two days if papahinga ako or tutuloy ako," he said. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
