Calvin Oftana doubtful for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup
National team head coach Tim Cone revealed on Monday that Oftana is uncertain to suit up after the sharpshooter sustained injuries during TNT's finals series against San Miguel in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup.
Oftana hurt both of his ankles in the grueling finals clash as the Tropang 5G eventually fell to the Beermen in six games.
"We're not sure about Calvin. The medical reports are that he might be out a little bit longer," Cone said following Gilas' 103-98 win over the Macau Black Bears in a friendly encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
"We were given a medical report from his camp so we're not sure if he's going to be available for the whole tournament."
Cone, though, isn't worried about the manpower shortage with his trusted wards in Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos ready to step in whenever necessary.
"We're gonna try to address that today or tomorrow and we got Troy and RJ in the wings to step in if necessary," Cone added.
Cone also added that June Mar Fajardo, who sat out the send-off showdown against Macau, will take another three-day off before rejoining physical activities once they land in Jeddah, where they will figure in another friendly game against Jordan before the Asia Cup proper.
"But June Mar, we expect him to start practicing when we land in Jeddah," Cone shared.
"He changes the game for us, we have to play a different way with June Mar on the floor and that's the only concern because we haven't had practice time with him. We'll see what's going on with him."

Jack Animam draws inspiration from Ja Morant
Ja Morant (in white) and Jack Animam (beside Morant, fourth from right) in the Make Them Watch Tour (Photo: Make Them Watch Tour/Nike) Jack Animam has weathered her share of highs and lows in her ongoing quest to uplift the local women's basketball scene. As she continues that mission, she also draws strength from a mantra by NBA star Ja Morant that resonates deeply: 'Nobody said it's gonna be easy.' Morant made his first visit to the Philippines last Friday as part of his 'Make Them Watch' tour, giving players like Jack Animam a rare opportunity to showcase their game in front of the Memphis guard. "The lesson is that nobody said it's gonna be easy but you have to continue working and keep going and keep the faith," Animam told the media after the exhibition game. "...because darating 'yung one day mo na you're gonna be in the spotlight. All the lights are gonna be on you and that just shows Ja Morant's journey." For Animam, Morant's journey is one that extends beyond personal inspiration, saying it echoes the aspirations of many in the basketball community, including those of the Gilas Pilipinas Women. The youth-laden Filipinas are coming off a gallant stand at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. Gilas kept its Division A status after pulling off a narrow 73-70 win against Lebanon with Animam joining forces with young guns Naomi Panganiban, Sumayah Sugapong, Kacey Dela Rosa, and Kent Pastrana. "Hindi medyo, bata talaga. But I think that just shows how resilient we are, us athletes, especially Filipina athletes," Animam added. "Kahit na kung sinuman ang nasa harap, walang aatrasan 'yan. Laban talaga 'yan and I think that's what we showed." Animam also hopes to see more international basketball stars engage with the local scene, especially with the Philippines being one of the most passionate basketball nations in the world. "Personally, makita 'yung ganitong karaming babae to join in this event, sobrnag happy. We're a basketball-crazy country so dapat lang 'yung mga basketball stars dito pumunta," Animam said. "And the kids can see kasi representation matters and to see these girls play, and hindi lang basta maglaro kasi talagang may skills at talent, just wow. Amazing." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Gilas Pilipinas reasserts mastery vs Jordan in friendly game ahead of FIBA Asia Cup
Gilas Pilipinas continued its mastery over Jordan with a decisive 75-61 victory during their friendly encounter on Sunday at the Al Ahli Sports Club in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The Filipinos held firm after taking an 11-point lead at halftime, keeping Jordan in check down the stretch thanks to timely triples from Scottie Thompson, Calvin Oftana, Dwight Ramos, and Kevin Quiambao in the payoff period. The game served as a rematch between the Philippines and Jordan since their gold medal tussle at the 19th Asian Games in 2023, which the Filipinos ruled by taking a 70-60 triumph to deliver the country's first gold in more than 60 years. It also marked the second straight friendly game for Gilas following their 103-98 comeback win over the Macau Black Bears last Monday. For head coach Tim Cone, these games serve as a valuable gauge of the team's readiness for the FIBA Asia Cup next week. "Well, I'm just looking for a measurement of where we are in terms of preparedness. So I think that is really the key, to see how prepared we are," Cone said in a report from the PBA website. "I don't think we're there yet, but I think these games will go a long way in helping us where we want to get to." The 14-point win over the world no. 35 Jordan was the last tune-up match for Gilas before the Filipinos plunge into Asia Cup action. Gilas will open its campaign on early Wednesday against Chinese Taipei before locking horns with New Zealand and Iraq on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News
