Koraput supplies 1st batch of organic kalajeera rice to Puri temple

Koraput: In a proud milestone for tribal heartland, Koraput district administration flagged off the inaugural supply of organic kalajeera rice from Shabar Shreekhetra, Koraput to the Jagannath Temple, Puri, on Thursday.
The initiative, launched on the auspicious occasion of Netrotsav, marks the beginning of the Amrut Anna Yojana, which aims to prepare Mahaprasad using organic rice.
"It's a proud moment for tribal farmers of the district. As it has been decided by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, the rice will be used regularly in "Kotha Bhogo" and Mahaprasad during this year's Rath Yatra and beyond. Also, a dedicated Amrut Anna sales counter will be opened at the temple to offer organic Mahaprasad to devotees," said collector (Koraput) Keerthi Vasan V.
The journey from Koraput to Puri also symbolizes the socio-cultural empowerment of tribal communities, promoting organic agriculture, food safety, and natural resource conservation. The initiative is expected to enhance the economic resilience of small holder farmers while placing Koraput firmly on India's GI map, he added.
For the inaugural journey, 32 quintals of organic kalajeera rice, along with one quintal each of 'moong' and 'biri' (black gram), have been dispatched to Puri.

The GI-tagged Koraput kalajeera rice, known for its aroma and fine quality, has been traditionally cultivated by small and marginal tribal farmers. With support from the state govt and Nabard, it received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, opening new markets and boosting demand across India and overseas.
In kharif 2024, over 1,800 farmers across eight blocks of Koraput cultivated kalajeera rice on 1,365 acres. For the first time, 1,900 quintals of paddy were directly procured through independent mandis set up by farmer groups. This year, the cultivation target has been scaled up to 2,000 acres, including indigenous varieties.

Emergency drill by simulating an air crash conducted at Madurai airport
Madurai: A full-scale emergency exercise was conducted at Madurai airport on Thursday by simulation of a scenario of an aircraft crash within the vicinity of the aerodrome. According to a statement, the exercise was performed only after two levels of meetings were already held with various stakeholders of the airport, fire department, police, hospitals, and Airports Authority of India (AAI) personnel, among others. The exercise commenced on Thursday with the intimation from air traffic controller (ATC) about the full-scale emergency and subsequently declaring a crash of an aircraft. The aircraft name was presumed to be ABC-123 and people on board were 120. All concerned agencies like CISF had the role of ensuring the entry of the various mutual aid agencies inside the airside of the aerodrome in the quickest time in compliance with the security norms. Mutual aid agencies like hospitals had come prepared with their ambulances and entered the airfield which were duly guided by vehicles of AAI to the air crash site, along with the state fire department vehicle. The simulated fire was put off effectively by the fire department and a triage area was set up for priority -1, priority-2, and priority-3 casualties. Later, a de-briefing meeting was held with all the participating agencies to ensure clear understanding of their roles and address their concerns to ensure that the future exercises/ real incidents are adequately handled to ensure the quickest rescue operations to minimise loss to human lives and property.

1 2 Bengaluru: On the eve of Kempegowda Jayanti, something beautiful unfolded in Bengaluru: Revival of Bandi Devara Utsava — a bullock cart procession that reflects the agrarian traditions and cultural symbols passed on since the times of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru. On Thursday evening, decorated carts pulled by 10 pairs of adorned oxen were part of a procession that was taken out from the BBMP headquarters at NR Square to Kempegowda's statue in front of Vidhana Soudha through Cubbon Park. The spectacle, which was being taken out for the first time in the city, left motorists and onlookers spellbound. The event was organised by Bandi Devara Utsava Samiti to make the youngsters familiarise with the cultural heritage of the state, especially the Vokkaliga community in South Karnataka. The procession featured an Okala Deepa (a huge lamp made out of rice flour), followed by carts that carried sweets which were later distributed near Vidhana Soudha. Men and women, dressed in traditional attire, were part of the procession. Yakshagana, Veeragase, Patakunitha, Karadi Kunitha, Somanakunitha and Dollu Kunitha artistes added colour to the event. Pune: The first merit list for admissions to First Year Junior College (FYJC) across the state, expected on Thursday, will now be out on June 30 and students can confirm admissions in the allotted colleges from July 1 to July 7. Apart from problems with the display matrix on the website, the centralised admission process (CAP) committee said that the June 23 govt resolution stating that SC, ST, and OBC reservations would not apply to minority colleges led to last-minute changes and the delay. Mahesh Palkar, director of secondary and higher secondary education, said that after the merit list is generated, the cut-off marks must be on display which was not getting generated.
