Police launch probe into viral video linked to hate content

GEORGE TOWN: Police have opened an investigation following a report lodged on Aug 12 regarding a viral video shared on Facebook under the name Akmal Salleh.
The video reportedly contains statements categorised as "hate content" and is believed to have the potential to cause public anxiety among the local community as well as disrupt public order.
State police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said investigations had been initiated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 506 of the Penal Code.
"Initial investigations were carried out by Penang police before the case was taken over by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit of Bukit Aman today," he said.
Azizee said that, to date, two reports had been lodged by members of the public.
"Both cases are currently being investigated under the relevant legal provisions," he added.

Fahmi: Don't turn Zara Qairina's death into a populist cause

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil urged the public not to make the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir a populist cause. Fahmi was responding to public rallies and online calls for justice as National Day on Aug 31 approached. "Don't build a palace above a grave. Don't take advantage to popularise yourselves. We want justice and the law must take its course." He said Bukit Aman had taken over the probe and that it was investigating three officers over alleged procedural lapses during the initial investigation. Fahmi added that he wanted justice for Zara; Reserve Officers' Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, who died last month: and tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, who died 12 years ago. He also said bullies could face legal action. The Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code were amended in Parliament in December last year, and the new provisions came into force last month, strengthening the scope for prosecution.

Chinese national faces charges over attack on immigration officer at KLIA

SEPANG: A Chinese woman who was detained in connection with injuring an immigration officer at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last Wednesday will be charged in the Sessions Court here tomorrow. KLIA deputy district police chief Superintendent Albany Hamzah said statements from five individuals, including the counter officer involved, had been recorded in the case. "The Chinese woman will be charged in court tomorrow," he told BuletinTV3, today. On the woman's entry record into Malaysia, Albany said the matter was being investigated by the Immigration Department. The incident, which occurred at about 7.40pm at the Departure Hall of KLIA Terminal 1, involved four Chinese nationals — two adults and two children — undergoing immigration clearance. The woman was detained for acting aggressively and injuring an Immigration counter officer during clearance, allegedly because she was worried about missing her flight. She is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, Section 332 for causing hurt to a public servant and Section 353 for using criminal force against a public servant.
