Cricket chiefs stage live 'super-over' shootout for Hundred stakes

Sky News29-01-2025
Bidders for stakes in English cricket's eight Hundred franchises will this week begin taking part in live auctions enabling them to submit binding offers at 15-minute intervals, Sky News has learnt.
Sources said on Wednesday that rivals contesting for franchises including the Oval Invincibles and London Spirit would be allowed to table new offers on the condition that they were at least £3m higher than the previous highest bid.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) hopes the structure of the process will encourage a lucrative bidding war, with its 49% stake in the Oval Invincible the first to be sold on Thursday.
Three further auctions, including that of London Spirit, will take place this week, with the remaining quartet to be auctioned next week.
Insiders said the ECB hoped to be able to delay an announcement about the outcome until the latter part of next week.
Losing bidders in each franchise may be given the opportunity to participate in the remaining processes, although the mechanics of such a scenario were unclear on Wednesday.
People close to the process said they anticipated that the Ambani family, which owns the Mumbai Indians IPL team, was seen as the likeliest winner of the Oval Invincibles auction.
That would leave a consortium of technology billionaires which includes Satya Nadella, the Microsoft chief executive, and Nikesh Arora, the former SoftBank executive, as the potential favourite to buy the ECB's stake in Lords-based London Spirit.
The private equity firm CVC Capital Partners and the consortium led by Mr Arora are also vying to buy the Oval Invincibles interest.
If the tech billionaires were successful in the Oval process, they would automatically drop out of the following day's London Spirit auction.
The other remaining bidders for London Spirit are
a vehicle controlled by Todd Boehly, a shareholder in Chelsea Football Club; members of the Manchester United-owning Glazer family; and RPSG Group, the owner of the Indian Premier League team Lucknow Super Giants.
For franchises with only two shortlisted bidders, the auction will be a straightforward sealed bid shootout.
The London Spirit franchise is expected to be valued at more than £140m, meaning the proceeds to be received and distributed by the ECB would be at least £70m, the insiders added.
In total, the ECB has indicated that it could receive in the region of £350m for its 49% stakes in the eight teams.
The host counties are also allowed to sell their 51% shareholdings, although some have said they do not intend to do so.
The MCC, which controls the London Spirit franchise, does not intend to offload any of its stake at this point, according to cricket insiders.
Investors will only be allowed to own a stake in one of the eight teams, which also include Welsh Fire, Southern Brave and the Northern Superchargers.
A bigger-than-expected windfall from the process could offer a financial lifeline to a number of cash-strapped counties, with part of the proceeds likely to be used to pay down debt.
Concerns have been raised, however, that windfalls from the Hundred auction will not deliver a meaningful improvement in counties' long-term financial sustainability.
The outcome of the Hundred auction is also likely to intensify other searching questions about the future of cricket, as the Test format of the game struggles for international commercial relevance against shorter-length competition.
The Hundred auction is being handled by bankers at Raine Group, the same firm which oversaw the sale of large stakes in both Manchester United and Chelsea in recent years.

Marcus Rashford sent Barcelona warning by Liverpool icon: 'He's got an amazing agent'

Marcus Rashford ended his Manchester City nightmare by sealing a sensational loan move to Barcelona earlier this summer and has been sent a brutal message ahead of his debut Steve McManaman believes Marcus Rashford has no place at Barcelona despite his sensational loan move. The Manchester United forward finally sealed a move away from Old Trafford last month as he moved to Catalonia for the forthcoming season. ‌ The switch sees him move on loan, albeit Barcelona have an option to make the move permanent next summer for around £30m. But Rashford has had a slow start to life in Spain. ‌ Barcelona are still struggling to register him for this season's La Liga opener due to their uncertain financial situation. And Liverpool icon McManaman struggles to see Rashford getting an opportunity given the options that the club already have. ‌ 'It's certainly important that he hits the ground running,' he said at an event with ESPN. 'I thought it was an incredible move for him, to be very honest. 'The last couple of seasons at Manchester United, the way Manchester United performed - for him to leave and go to arguably one of the most exciting teams in Europe, I thought: 'He's got an amazing agent.' 'Where's he going to fit in? The answer is, I don't know. Because Raphinha, Robert [Lewandowski] and Lamine [Yamal], they had the most incredible season. 'So you think that is set in stone. You've got Ferran [Torres] behind them. They've moved a couple of players out - if anything, when you look at Barcelona's team, they need a couple of more defenders... but they go and bring in yet another forward. So we'll wait and see.' McManaman added: 'I hope he's a huge success, and I hope he does play. Because it will benefit everybody if he does play.' ‌ Will Marcus Rashford be a success with Barcelona? Barcelona are just a day from starting their latest La Liga season as they travel to Mallorca on Saturday evening. As it stands, Rashford's registration has still not been approved. But it appears that the Spanish giants are set to take emergency action to ensure that he can play sooner rather than later. According to The Athletic, Barcelona executives would be willing to put their own personal wealth at risk to secure a bank guarantee worth around €7million (£6m). ‌ Rashford is not the only player who is not eligible to play though. Goalkeepers Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny, as well as young defender Gerard Martin, are still not registered. Rashford will certainly be keen to get back on the pitch sooner rather than later having scored four goals in 17 appearances on loan at Aston Villa last season, albeit the Premier League side chose not to sign him permanently.

Man United outcast Jadon Sancho all but confirms romance with American rapper Saweetie by inking her name on his neck - and removing 'her only' tattoo for former flame

Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho has all but confirmed his relationship with American rapper Saweetie by inking her name on his skin. The 25-year-old was pictured alongside the Billboard star at the California-based Apollo Tattoo and Piercing Studio. Images from the shop's Instagram account also showed that the England star had added the word Qiava - Saweetie's middle name - to his neck behind his left ear. Sancho also had a previous tattoo on his hand which read 'her only' covered up with a colourful flower arrangement. It is not clear who that former flame was. The winger fuelled romance rumours in May when it was reported that Saweetie, real name Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, had pride of place as his phone's lock screen photograph. Sancho was celebrating Chelsea 's Europa Conference League final win on Wednesday night and held his phone aloft as he made merry with Trevoh Chalobah. Eagle-eyed fans spotted the picture of Saweetie, 32, on his phone and the speculation about his love life has been rife ever since. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that the duo shared a hug at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. The pair have been rumoured to be dating for a few months after it was revealed that the rapper was Sancho's lock screen photo Sancho's latest body art comes as he inches closer to a departure from the Red Devils amid interest from Serie A side Roma. As first reported in Daily Mail's Transfer Confidential column on Tuesday , the Italians are the latest to discuss a potential loan and option to buy for the England international but United only want a permanent sale for the 25-year-old. Sancho has been frozen out at United and isn't part of Ruben Amorim 's plans at Old Trafford. Roma have made an attempt to sign the winger on a season-long loan as they look to secure a deal before the closure of the transfer window. Given Sancho's wages of £250,000-a-week, United would prefer a sale for a fee of between £20million and £25million. Juventus and his former club Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with Sancho this summer. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea , with whom he won the Conference League. Sancho previously had a loan spell back at Dortmund. Sancho signed for United from Dortmund in 2021 for £73million. He has one year remaining on his contract although United have the option to extend it by a further year. During his time at United Sancho has made 83 appearances, while he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists.

Today's rugby news as Louis Rees-Zammit starts work and England international reveals 'perfect move' to Wales

Today's rugby news as Louis Rees-Zammit starts work and England international reveals 'perfect move' to Wales The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Louis Rees-Zammit undergos medical assessment at Bristol (Image: Bristol Bears) These are your latest rugby headlines on Friday, August 15. ‌ Rees-Zammit gets straight to work Louis Rees-Zammit will join up with his new Bristol Bears teammates today after his move to the Gallagher Prem side was confirmed last night. The 24-year-old sealed his return to English rugby on Thursday, putting pen to paper with the Bears just two weeks after announcing that he would be coming back to the sport where he made his name after spending the last 18 months trying to achieve his dream of playing in the NFL. ‌ The Wales international wing received interest from clubs in England and France, while Cardiff also emerged as surprise contenders to sign him, but Bristol won the race to secure his signature and announced the marquee signing yesterday evening, with Rees-Zammit saying joining the Ashton Gate was the "obvious choice" for him. ‌ Having flown back from America to sign the deal yesterday and undergo a medical, the former Gloucester man is getting stuck in from the off, with his new head coach Pat Lam confirming that he would be joining up with the rest of the squad on Friday. "Louis is a world-class player, and we're thrilled to welcome him back to rugby union and to the Bears this season," said Lam. "Although we have a small squad, we've been building quality depth and experience across the team, bringing in players who can cover multiple positions to help us take that next step in the PREM and in Europe. Article continues below "Louis offers exactly that to our dynamic back three, with his ability and desire to play both full back and wing for the Bears.. He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club. 'At just 24 years old, we know the athlete and competitor he is," Lam continued. "The way we play and the way he wants to play fit seamlessly together, and we're looking forward to working with him when he joins the group tomorrow." Meanwhile, Rees-Zammit said: "Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me. The style of rugby the team play - all about entertaining the fans and growing the game - perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field. ‌ 'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in the love with the game. I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values. I'm looking forward to working with my teammates, Pat Lam and the coaches and all the backroom team to bring success to the Bears." McNally: Cardiff was the perfect move Cardiff lock Josh McNally says joining the capital city region last summer was the "perfect move" for him, having been given a new lease of life since moving to Arms Park. The 6ft 7in once-capped England international joined Matt Sherratt's side ahead of last season following a five-year stint with Bath, and played a big role in Cardiff's URC play-off push as he made no fewer than 21 appearances for the Blue & Blacks. ‌ In the end, Sherratt's men finished just one point and one place outside the top eight, with McNally saying he and his teammates are now fuelled by a "huge desire" to go one step further this season. Reflecting on his first season in the capital and looking ahead to the new campaign, the 34-year-old admitted that he had considered hanging up his boots before falling back in love with rugby in Wales. 'It really rejuvenated my love for the game,' said McNally as he discussed the move. 'I think once that fire goes out it's a pretty hard sport to keep playing every week. But I love to come into work every day. It's been a perfect move for me.' ‌ Looking back on last season, he added: 'The play-offs were never really a target of ours at the start of the year. We were just talking about how we were going to grow and get better as a group and enjoy it along the way. 'But then when we got to that period around the end of the Six Nations, we set a goal and we tried to achieve something. We were underdogs all year. No-one gave us a chance. But all year we fought for everything, fought for every match, fought for every win. 'When we went to South Africa for the final two games, I felt like we had made it, that we were pretty much there. It was disappointing that the results went against us, including our own. In the end, we just missed out. But, ultimately, we left Cape Town thinking we had done a good job during the season. ‌ 'When you start goal-setting and looking at where we can go this year, I think it's a massive positive that the goal we set for ourselves midway through last year we pretty much got there and we were unfortunate not to make the play-offs. "I think it was a good season. The group, the club and the organisation grew and we were all just excited to get going this year. That's been reflected in pre-season so far.' On the upcoming season, McNally said there is now a "huge desire" to make it to the play-offs, adding: "We have shown what we can do against good teams. There's a desire now that we want to push that, get better as a group and start putting 80 minutes on the pitch. ‌ 'If you look at the fixtures this year, pretty much every team that we play at home we've got to be targeting that as a result. The way the fans came out last year, I couldn't believe it, some of the games we played here. "So going into this year, there's a huge amount of positivity around the group about what we can achieve and we are just really excited to get out there. Scarlets lock pens new deal Scarlets second row Jac Price has signed a new contract with the region. ‌ The 25-year-old has played 59 games for Dwayne Peel's side since making his debut against the Ospreys five years ago, while he also represented Wales U20s at the World Rugby Championships in Argentina in 2019. He is the latest in a string of players to commit their future to the Scarlets, with the likes of Macs Page, Joe Roberts, Sam Costelow, Taine Plumtree and Johnny Williams among those to pen new deals. 'I'm proud to have signed a new contract and to continue to represent this club," said Price. "I'm a boy from Carmarthen who used to go to watch the Scarlets play at Stradey Park as a youngster. It's big for me and my family. ‌ 'We have a young team who are determined to build on what we achieved at the end of the season in reaching the URC play-offs and qualifying for the Champions Cup. We want to start the season how we finished the last one, in a good place. 'It is great to see the players coming through the academy," he added. "But there's still plenty of older heads like Sam (Lousi) and Jake (Ball), who I can learn off and hopefully I can pass on some of my experience to the youngsters coming through – trying to do what those boys have done for me over the years. Meanwhile, Peel added: 'Jac has become a valued member of the squad having played more than a half century of games for the club. Article continues below 'He has grown up in the region and understands what it means to be a Scarlet. He has played in some big games for the club over the years and is someone who we feel will mature into a leader within the squad.'
