Ancestry wants your dusty VHS tapes—and here's why

The transaction will combine Ancestry, which has more than 3.7 million subscribers and generates over $1 billion in subscription revenue annually, with iMemories, the 'Netflix' of old family memories that has more than 100,000 paying subscribers and has digitized over 100 million memories from VHS videotapes, photo prints, DVDs, and other video formats. IMemories was also featured on the 2023 list of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies.
'The goal is to bring all family storytelling together into one spot,' says Howard Hochhauser, Ancestry's president and CEO, in an interview with Fast Company.
Terms of the transaction weren't disclosed, although Hochhauser says it is Ancestry's largest acquisition in terms of revenue.
Blending records with memories
By integrating iMemories' content into Ancestry's platform, the combined company will build on a strategy spearheaded by Hochhauser to connect 10,000 terabytes of Ancestry data detailing birth records, marriages, deaths, military service, and immigration with archival family photos and videos.
Over time, Ancestry says it will utilize artificial intelligence to weave together visuals from iMemories and Ancestry's own bank of user-uploaded content, as well as AI-created images, to produce short films that can tell family lore stories.
'When a consumer sees a photo versus say, a U.S. census, they retain better, higher engagement, higher retention,' says Hochhauser, who first joined Ancestry in 2009 as chief financial officer and has served as an executive at the company for an initial public offering in 2009, a going-private transaction in 2012, and the 2020 sale to asset manager Blackstone.
Turning dusty records into audio
This week, and separate from the iMemories transaction, Ancestry is launching a beta AI-enabled pilot to around 500 users that can create audio files from the documents found on Ancestry. Hochhauser says these assets can be especially compelling for younger consumers. He shares an anecdote of how his own 18-year-old son showed little interest in an ancestor's written tale of fighting in World War II.
But when the text was converted into audio, Hochhauser says his son was on the edge of his seat when learning about a great uncle's experience in battle, including throwing grenades and eventually earning a Purple Heart. 'That's pretty powerful,' Hochhauser says. 'And so that's the direction we are taking the company.'
Hochhauser says prior to the iMemories deal, Ancestry conducted research that found that 40% of its users said they wanted to have a digitization and storage service offered by the company. It also polled non-Ancestry users and found that a third of them shared the same sentiment.
AI is speeding up history
Ancestry is also leaning on AI to speed up the process of digitizing census data. Thirteen years ago, in 2012, when the U.S. Census Bureau released records for every living person in the country for the year 1940, it took the company nine months and millions of dollars to digitize all of that information. But when the 1950 files were released in 2022, technology had advanced to the point where Ancestry could use computer vision and AI to transcribe the files within nine days, without any manual labor.
The company is using AI in a similar manner to comb through records from France, Belgium, and other foreign markets.
Privacy concerns loom large
The Ancestry-iMemories transaction does come at a heightened moment of consumer anxiety concerning the data protection of personal DNA information held by genomics companies. The 2023 data breach of rival 23andMe, which later fell into bankruptcy, inflamed fears about who would gain control of genetic information when one of these genealogy companies falters.
'People's confidence has been shaken, in Big Tech overall, and also in consumer genomics,' says Dr. Brandon Colby, the founder and CEO of Sequencing.com, a biotech company that performs whole genome sequencing. 'The need to be extra obvious about transparency is really important. There's no room for people to go and assume that we're trying to do something shady.'
Sequencing stresses the company's 'Privacy Forever' commitment to consumers, which details that it sells no data to pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, or other outside parties, which is how some genomics companies generate revenue. Colby says Sequencing generates revenue from monthly subscriptions and by selling reports it produces based on genome sequencing that can show consumers details about their reaction to medications or offer tips on better sleep or nutrition strategies.
Hochhauser echoes a similar refrain at Ancestry. Users control their own biological samples and DNA data, and have the freedom to delete that information from the service if they'd like. The same approach will be taken with the AI-related content that may be generated from iMemories data. It is up to users how they want to share it, he says.
'We are a family history company,' Hochhauser says. 'Consumers own their data, control their data, and we have multifactor authentication, as an example, and lots of different security protocols in place to protect and preserve data.'

AI Is Giving Rise to a Wild Range of New Slang — Including the Term ‘Clanker'
Most parents would put a hard stop to anything derogatory and mean coming out of their kids' mouths. But how do we handle it when the slur is aimed at robots? Yes, this is a real thing that's happening. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) incorporated into every area of our lives, people are falling in love with chat bots, outsourcing their thoughts (and homework) to generative AI, and, yes, slinging derogatory words to anything robotic as part of a larger 'robophobic' trend. 'Clanker' Middle school teacher and TikToker Mr. Lindsay revealed what 'clanker' means in a new video. 'The word 'clanker' is being deemed as a robophobic term and is being used humorously toward robots,' he says. 'It's meant to be an insult toward robots and that's all it means.' Like in the Clone Wars cartoon, where a droid was called 'a dirty, wire-backed clanker,' according to Mr. Lindsay. When the U.S. President refers to actual human beings as 'illegals,' then you can see how we live in a society where casual slurs are deemed appropriate. Sure, you are being derogatory to a robot, but it just paints a picture of how quick we are to diminish something just to feel better in some way. 'Slopper' Other Ai-inspired slurs are gaining steam right now too. For example, words to degrade people who use AI for everything. The popularity of AI use by the elders among us — aka, millennials and older— has given rise to terms like 'slopper' or 'Groksucker,' per Fast Company. Because anything worth doing is going to be mocked mercilessly about, right? 'Slopper' is a play on 'slop,' which is what people call low-quality text, images, and anything else created by AI that are dominating our screens and replacing work done by real people. So, in that vein, a 'slopper' is someone who is 'using ChatGPT to do everything for them,' according to Fast Company. 'Groksucker' is a more vulgar way of saying this, referring to people who rely on Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok on X. How Teens Feel About AI Do these derogatory terms give a clue into how teens really feel about AI or is it just their dark humor coming into play because they actually do like it? After all, Common Sense Media released a report last month that found 72 percent of teens have used AI companions, with 52 percent revealing that they are regular users. And 1 in 3 teens say they turn to AI companions for conversations, getting emotional support, role-playing, and romance. Nearly 1 in 3 said that these interactions were as satisfying or more satisfying than conversations with real people! SheKnows talked to teens during a Teens at a Table episode, where they reflected on the value of real friendships. 'I feel like AI won't give you a realistic expectation of what having a real partner is like,' 16-year-old Meera told us about relationships with AI. She continued, 'AI is always nice to you and, like, catering to you, and I feel like that's not actually how it works with people. My friends and I … we sometimes fight, but that's part of our friendship.' 17-year-old Greta agrees that parents should have conversations and limits around kids with AI. 'I don't think it's a good thing for kids to be looking at AI too early,' she said. 'Because it's really, like, limitless.' What Do You Think? When AI first started taking off a few years ago, teachers and parents were wary of the way students could use it to do their homework for them. Now, teachers and parents are turning to ChatGPT and other tools to help us — and kids are making fun of us for it. (Don't you know the quickest way to make something uncool for the next generation is by doing it yourself?) Maybe the trend of calling AI-powered tools and robots 'clankers' — and making fun of people who feel like they always need to turn to ChatGPT or Grok — will actually be a positive thing. These new slang terms can help shape the way people think about AI and encourage healthy practices, such as using ChatGPT to help you draft an outline for a research paper but not to replace your IRL girlfriend. On the other hand, robophobic terms like these could make people who use AI feel even lonelier and more isolated from society. It's just one more way they are being bullied and made to feel lesser than, which might make them more likely to turn to AI for companionship and support. This is one of those tricky turning points in society where we don't really know how things will affect us in the long run until time passes. In the meantime, let this be a tool to ease into conversations with your kids about our use and reliance of AI and what we want our future to look like. FatFace stores closing 2025: All U.S. and Canada locations on the doomed list as retailer goes online-only in North America
The retail clothing chain FatFace has confirmed to Fast Company that it will be closing 23 of its stores in the United States and Canada. Here's what you need to know about the company's shuttering of stores. What's happened? Retail clothing chain FatFace has confirmed to Fast Company that it will be shuttering 23 stores in the United States and Canada. FatFace is a U.K.-based lifestyle, accessory, and apparel store that was founded in 1988. In 2023, British fashion retail giant Next bought the company for around $140 million. But in the years since the acquisition, physical brick-and-mortar retailers have struggled, leading to numerous high-profile chains shuttering their stores. Major retail chains that have shuttered stores in the past few years have included furnishings retailer At Home, fashion and accessories retailer Claire's, and discount retailer Big Lots. The Express says that FatFace's decision to close its North American locations is due to economic uncertainty and increased costs. The company told Fast Company that rising costs made the physical store model unviable at this time. FatFace says the closure of its North American stores will impact 145 jobs. FatFace lives on overseas and online However, while FatFace has confirmed that it is closing its North American locations, the brand will still live on overseas and online. After the North American stores are shuttered, FatFace will continue to sell its wares to Canadian and U.S. customers online. The company will also continue to operate the 175 brick-and-mortar stores it currently has in the United Kingdom. But any future expansion plans the company has in the works seem to be digital only. FatFace says it will expand its online offerings to additional countries beyond the U.S. and the U.K. in the future. North American FatFace store locations FatFace did not provide a list of its closing locations or a date by which they would be permanently shuttered. But all of its 23 existing locations in the United States are scheduled to close for good in 2025. Those seeking a list of where the FatFace stores are in North America should be aware that the company has confirmed to Fast Company that its online store locator tool for North America is not currently accurate. As of the time of this writing, that online store locator tool lists more than 60 locations currently operating in the United States and Canada. But FatFace told Fast Company that the brand only has 23 locations left in North America. Retail store closures could hit 15,000 in 2025 FatFace isn't the only retailer facing store closings this year—and it likely won't be the last. According to a January report from Coresight Research, up to 15,000 retail stores in the United States could close by the end of the year. That would represent a 50% increase from the 10,000 that closed in 2020 as the pandemic depressed in-store shopping. The main driver behind the expected closures, Coresight says, is increased online competition and inflationary pressures.
