Cybercrime plaints rise, but losses reduce in Raj
2
Jaipur: Cybercrime-related losses in Rajasthan dropped by Rs 26 crore in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year, while Rs 23 crore was held or refunded, police officials said Saturday.
Data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal showed complaints rose slightly from 53,975 in the first half of 2024 to 54,879 in 2025, but FIRs dropped from 250 to 132. The total reported fraud amount went down from Rs 354.66 crore to Rs 328.64 crore, while the amount held or frozen increased from Rs 43.93 crore to Rs 66.58 crore.
The decline followed special operations and widespread awareness drives. The launch of the cyber helpline 1930 and WhatsApp helplines 9256001930 and 9257510100, along with regular advisories in print and electronic media, led to more prompt reporting and quicker intervention, officials said.
Police have urged people to call the helpline 1930, use the WhatsApp numbers, file a complaint on the cybercrime portal, or reach out to the nearest police station or cyber police station if they face any online fraud.

Drugs trafficked through food delivery-style apps in Delhi; ₹100 cr drugs seized
In one of the biggest international drug busts in recent months, Delhi Police have seized narcotics worth ₹100 crore and arrested five foreign nationals linked to a Nigeria-based cartel that used encrypted apps and food delivery-style drop-offs to push drugs to young consumers in south Delhi. The crackdown began last month when constable Hemant of the crime branch, acting on a specific tipoff, intercepted a suspicious courier parcel from a Moti Nagar facility. (HT Photo) The syndicate, which ran on an encrypted call-centre style network, was led by a Nigerian national identified as Callistus alias Kalis. 'Customers placed orders through encrypted WhatsApp calls to international numbers, deliveries were made by Nigerian nationals living in India, and money was laundered through a hawala-like network that bypassed formal banking channels. It was a complete corporate-style structure,' said Mangesh Kashyap, additional commissioner of police (crime branch). The crackdown began last month when constable Hemant of the crime branch, acting on a specific tipoff, intercepted a suspicious courier parcel from a Moti Nagar facility. Hidden inside packages of Indian suits and shoes was nearly 900 grams of MDMA, meant for export. 'This interception opened the lid on a sprawling international drug network stretching across Australia, the UK, Malaysia, Japan, and New Zealand,' said deputy commissioner of police (crime branch) Harsh Indora. Investigations led police to Kameni Philipp, a 44-year-old Cameroonian national believed to be the India operations head. From his possession, police recovered 2.01kg of high-purity Colombian cocaine, tightly packed in waterproofed brick form. 'Philipp, who had earlier been deported from India, returned using a fake Cameroonian passport arranged by his uncle, Callistus. He had taken over local operations from a man identified as Adore, 53, who was later arrested from Chhatarpur,' Indora said. Police said Philipp revealed how the syndicate operated from Nigeria, issuing instructions to on-ground delivery agents via WhatsApp calls. The couriers — including Koulaie Philipp alias Tall Guy and Kelechi Chikwe alias Victor — wore distinctive clothing such as checked shirts and black helmets, and dropped off consignments at pre-determined locations without ever meeting the buyers. Tall Guy was arrested on June 29. Victor, who entered India illegally in 2011, was arrested on July 10. Police said he rose from street-level peddler to area coordinator, maintained detailed ledgers of drug sales, and managed safe houses where narcotics were stored. From his residence in Kishangarh Village in Delhi, police recovered 185 grams of cocaine, ₹91,500 in cash, forged Aadhaar cards, and notebooks tracing drug sales back to 2019. 'The monthly sales from the Vasant Kunj belt alone fetched them over ₹1 crore,' said a senior police officer, part of the investigation. Victor also led police to another peddler — a namesake — who was subsequently arrested. Police said drug proceeds collected in India were converted into Nigerian currency (Naira) and deposited in overseas accounts. In return, the cartel arranged for equivalent payouts in rupees to relatives of Nigerians living in India, after charging a 3–5% commission. In the past six months alone, transactions worth over 85 crore Naira (approximately ₹76 crore) have been linked to this network. 'This was a completely insulated setup,' Indora said. 'Each person only knew the link before and after them — delivery agents didn't know who they were delivering to or receiving from. That way, even if they were caught, they couldn't compromise the chain.' All five accused are currently in judicial custody. Police said further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.

7 kids die, 21 injured as classroom roof collapses in Jhalawar village
Kota/Jaipur: Seven children were killed and at least 21 injured when a classroom ceiling collapsed on them at Piplodi Govt Upper Primary School in Jhalawar district Friday morning, moments after a teacher who had been alerted to "falling brick pieces" allegedly asked them to "sit quietly". Ten of the injured students were hospitalised in a critical condition, officials said. Principal Meena Garg and four teachers were suspended for alleged negligence pending a high-level inquiry, while state school education minister Madan Dilawar owned moral responsibility for the 7.40am tragedy. "I won't engage in a blame game. Being the education minister, I am responsible for this…We will conduct a fair investigation and strict action will be taken against those found guilty. We allocated funds for the maintenance of 2,000 dilapidated govt schools in phases," Dilawar said. Late night, minister Dilawar announced that families of the deceased children will be given Rs 10 lakh each and one family member each will be given a contractual govt job. He also announced that classrooms in the new school building that would be built at the same place will be named after the deceased children. Outrage over the ceiling collapse triggered violence in Jhalawar in the evening, prompting police to baton charge groups of protesters blocking roads and pelting them with stones at Guradi Circle and outside SRG Hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The victims, between 10 and 15, were among 31 students of different classes inside the classroom when cracks in the ceiling suspected to have been caused by rainwater seepage purportedly opened up before their eyes. "We told sir that pieces of the ceiling were falling on us but he ignored it," said a teary-eyed girl. Within seconds, screams of children drowned in the ominous noise of brick and mortar coming down in a heap. Villagers who had sprinted towards the school compound on seeing clouds of dust spiralling into the air were the first rescuers, sources said. Witnesses said parents frantically searched for their children in the mounds of debris. "At least 13 kids were pulled out within 20 minutes of the ceiling collapse," said village sarpanch Ram Prasad Lodha, who drove his payloader to the site to assist in the rescue. Lodha alleged that an ambulance reached the village 45 minutes after being informed of the accident. Most of the injured students were taken to hospital on motorcycles, he said. While the education minister's office said 21 students were injured, Jhalawar district education officer Narso Meena's official report mentions injuries to 24 people. Preliminary reports suggested the students had been made to wait in their classrooms instead of going to the ground for morning prayers, as usual, because it was raining at the time. The classroom's rear wall collapsed first, causing the stone-slab roof to fall on the students. The classroom whose ceiling collapsed was one of two built in 1994 with funds from the gram panchayat. "Funds were released recently for repairs. We aren't sure if the rooms built by the gram panchayat were renovated or not," said an official. Collector Ajay Singh Rathore said the district administration recently instructed the education department to draw up a list of dilapidated school buildings. Piplodi Govt Upper Primary School, whose building is three decades old, didn't figure in that list, he said. Education secretary Krishna Kunal said the school's roof had been repaired in 2023. "If a little caution were exercised, such a tragedy wouldn't have occurred. We are appealing not only to teachers but also to parents and village representatives that children should not be sent to schools with dilapidated rooms." The district administration has already razed other rundown portions of the school to avoid another potential disaster during the monsoon. Jhalawar adjoins Kota district, which school education minister Dilawar represents in the assembly. Congress demanded Dilawar's resignation, saying the tragedy occurred in the minister's backyard and on his watch. People took to social media to question the accountability of ex-CM Vasundhara Raje and her parliamentarian son Dushyant Singh also, as the family has been representing Jhalawar for nearly four decades.

Param Bir gets CBI clean chit in third MVA-era case, 2 pending
Mumbai: CBI has filed a chargesheet against Thane Anti-Extortion Cell cops, including former senior inspector Pradeep Sharma, late ACP N T Kadam and inspector Rajkumar Kothmire, and private individuals for allegedly extorting Rs 1 crore from bookie and businessman Ketan Tanna by registering a false case against him in 2018. However, it found no evidence against the then Thane police chief Param Bir Singh, DCP Deepak Deoraj, businessman Bimal Aggarwal, gangster Ravi Pujari, and others initially named in the FIR. This was one of the 5 cases involving Singh— he later headed Mumbai police— transferred to CBI on an SC order. They were registered when MVA was in govt. He has already been given clean chit by CBI in 2 other cases, while 2 others are pending. Cops from Thane Anti-Extortion Cell including, former senior inspector (now retired) Pradeep Sharma, have been chargesheeted by the CBI for allegedly extorting Rs 1 crore from bookie and businessman Ketan Tanna. The CBI has alleged that the accused conspired to extort huge sums of money from Tanna and others by falsely implicating them in a false case. The chargesheet was filed earlier this month before the chief judicial magistrate court in Thane. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Bookies Sonu Jalan and Tanna's allegations are that the accused police officers in 2018 framed them in a false case and extorted Rs 5 crore from them and other bookies. Tanna alleged that one Ritesh Shah, with whom he had a financial dispute, filed a false complaint alleging that Tanna took help from gangster Ravi Pujari in recovering betting money from him. Shah alleged that Tanna and his aide kidnapped him and forced him to hand over power of attorney for a flat. Following this, Thane police arrested Jalan, Ketan Tanna, and a few others and invoked MCOCA. Shah alleged that he was kidnapped on Jan 22, 2018, but when Tanna produced travel documents to show he was in Dubai on that particular day, Shah changed his statement to say he was kidnapped on Jan 17. "This shows that Shah willingly changed his statement to support the allegation against Tanna," says the chargesheet. The CBI has also raised questions over the decision to invoke the stringent act of MCOCA against Tanna. "A proposal for invoking MCOCA was initiated on June 3, 2018, and the approval was received the very next day. Shah claimed that he received threat calls from Pujari, but the recording was not available at the time of invoking MCOCA." The chargesheet also names suspended constables Suresh More, Sunil Desai, and private individuals including Vikas Dahabde, Ritesh Shah, and Sanjay Punamiya. The chargesheet says sanction from the Govt of Maharashtra is awaited.
