NDTV4 days ago
Srinagar:
As Defence Minister Rajnath Singh began the Operation Sindoor debate in Parliament, security forces scored a massive win today by gunning down three Pakistani terrorists in an encounter near Srinagar, two of them involved in the Pahalgam attack in which 26 innocents were murdered in cold blood.
Suleman Shah, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, was identified as the mastermind of the April 22 terror attack that shook the nation. Security sources have confirmed that he was among the terrorists killed in the encounter this morning. Today's operation, named Operation Mahadev, neutralised two other terrorists: Abu Hamza and Yasir. Yasir, too, is believed to be among the Pahalgam killers. Security forces from the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police were part of today's joint operation.
Suleman served in the Pakistan Army and was also known as Hashim Moosa. In the aftermath of the terror attack at Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had announced a Rs 20 lakh reward on anyone providing information about Suleman.

The official X account of the Indian Army's Chinar Corps earlier posted that the security forces have launched Operation Mahadev in Lidwas. "Three terrorists have been neutralised in an intense firefight. Operation Continues," the Army said in an update, adding that the operation is not over yet.
All the terrorists, it is learnt, were "high-value" targets and foreign nationals. According to reports, the security forces acted on an intelligence input and launched the operation in the Mulnar area of Harwan. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area and a combing exercise is on.
NDTV has also accessed a photo of the terrorist hideout that was targeted in Operation Mahadev. The visuals show multiple guns in the hideout located deep inside a forest area. According to sources, Carbine and AK-47 rifles, 17 rifle grenades and other arms and ammunition were recovered during the encounter. Security forces suspect that the terrorists were planning a big action in Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Breaks Ranks With Rahul Gandhi Over Trump's 'Dead Economy' Remark

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly contradicted party colleague Rahul Gandhi's support for US President Donald Trump's characterization of India as a "dead economy," creating another visible fissure within the opposition party's leadership. Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Thiruvananthapuram parliamentarian firmly rejected Trump's economic assessment, stating simply that "this is not the case, and we all know it." His response directly countered Gandhi's endorsement of the American President's remarks made just one day earlier. Trump's inflammatory comments emerged this week as part of his broader criticism of India's relationship with Russia, where he declared indifference toward India-Russia cooperation and dismissed both nations as having "dead economies." The remarks accompanied his announcement of 25 percent tariffs on Indian goods effective August 1. Rahul Gandhi, serving as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had embraced Trump's economic critique as validation of his criticism against the Modi government. Gandhi claimed that everyone except the Prime Minister and Finance Minister recognized India's economic struggles, alleging that the BJP had deliberately damaged the economy to benefit industrialist Gautam Adani. Tharoor's dissent represents the latest indication of growing tensions between the senior Congress leader and his party's official positions. Unlike Gandhi's harsh governmental criticism, Tharoor refrained from attacking the Modi administration while rejecting Trump's characterization. The government has strongly defended India's economic performance through Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's parliamentary statements. Goyal emphasized India's status as the world's fastest-growing major economy and its trajectory toward becoming the third-largest global economy, while asserting that India would protect its national interests regarding US tariff implications. This disagreement compounds existing friction between Tharoor and Congress leadership, particularly regarding his public support for Operation Sindoor, which conflicts with the party's official stance. Tharoor has consistently prioritized national interests over party positioning, stating that "the nation comes before the party" when defending military operations. The rift deepened when the government appointed Tharoor to head the Operation Sindoor delegation to the United States without Congress party nomination. Sources indicate he declined participation in parliamentary debates on the operation, reportedly unwilling to contradict his established positions for party messaging purposes. This pattern of public disagreement highlights broader challenges within Congress regarding message discipline and ideological coherence, particularly when national security issues intersect with partisan political considerations.

Another accused in the case, Divya, has not yet reported. The police had informed the court that the employees needed to be interrogated in detail, following which the court denied them anticipatory bail and directed the accused to appear before the investigation team. Shocked to see CISF trooping into the House: Cong chief Kharge writes to RS Deputy Chairman

New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, dashed off a letter to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh on Friday, flagging the "shocking entry" of CISF personnel into the House and also raising an alarm over the "objectionable" practice. Congress President Kharge said that he was writing on behalf of all the Opposition parties and claimed that the members were "astonished and appalled" over the entry of CISF, a part of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), entering the Parliament with a "motive to control" the conduct of the House. 'We are astonished and shocked at the manner in which the CISF personnel are made to run into the Well of the House when the members are exercising their democratic right of protest,' LoP Kharge wrote in the letter. He professed that the CISF trooped into the House for the second-consecutive day on Friday and cautioned the government against such objectionable conduct. 'We saw this yesterday and we saw this today as well. Has our Parliament been reduced to such a level? This is most objectionable and we condemn it unequivocally,' Kharge further wrote. He added, 'We expect that in future the CISF personnel will not come trooping into the Well of the House, when the Members of Parliament are raising important issues of public concern.' Congress General Secretary and Communications incharge Jairam Ramesh shared party chief Kharge's letter and insinuated that "takeover of the chamber by CISF personnel" was in the works. 'After the sudden and unprecedented resignation of the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, we are now seeing the takeover of the chamber of the Council of States by the personnel of the CISF,' he wrote in a post on X. 'The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha has just written to the Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha on this shocking development,' he further said. Notably, both Houses of Parliament have been witnessing repeated disruptions over the Pahalgam terror attack, 'Operation Sindoor' and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Though the two Houses witnessed marathon debate on the Pahalgam attack and 'Operation Sindoor', this week, however, any agreement on SIR discussions remains elusive for now.
