Meet Kairan Quazi: The 16-year-old child prodigy who left Elon Musk's SpaceX for fintech
At an age when most teens are busy with getting good high school results, a 16-year-old boy has achieved a milestone that most professionals spend decades chasing. With a mind far beyond his years and a relentless drive that refuses to be boxed in by age, he's caught the world's attention with his exceptional talent.
Who is Kairan Quasi, and what did he achieve exceptionally?
Kairan Quasi is a 16-year-old boy who grew up in a family with a tech and finance background. His mom, Jullia Quazi, works at Wall Street, and his dad, Mustahid Quazi, is a chemical engineer. As an American-Bangladeshi, Kairan was raised with a mix of cultures and high academic standards, which ignited his early interest in math, computer science, and technology.
While most kids were still in middle school, Kairan was already taking college classes.
He earned an Associate of Science degree in Mathematics from Las Positas College at just 11 years of age, showing not just intelligence, but also a level of focus and problem-solving skills far beyond his age.
He joined
SpaceX
at a tender age!
Kairan Quazi became the youngest graduate in Santa Clara University's 170-year history, earning his degree in computer science and engineering at just 14. Soon after, he was recruited by SpaceX to work on the Starlink project and was in the headlines for being the company's youngest engineer.
For two years, Quazi contributed to production-critical systems that worked on how Starlink satellites target their beams, ensuring fast and reliable satellite internet, which is a significant responsibility despite his young age.
Quasi is now taking up new challenges
In 2025, Kairan decided to take another huge step in his career by shifting to the financial technology sector from aerospace engineering. He is now leaving SpaceX to join Citadel Securities in New York City as a quantitative developer.
He explained to Business Insider, 'After two years at SpaceX, I felt ready to take on new challenges and expand my skill set into a different high‑performance environment.' He found Citadel appealing for its 'ambitious culture' and access to a 'completely new domain'.
Kairan Quazi turned down offers from AI labs and big tech companies to go into finance, which might seem surprising at first. But for him, the choice made perfect sense.
As he told Business Insider, 'Quant finance offers a pretty rare combination: the complexity and intellectual challenge that AI research also provides, but with a much faster pace … I'll be able to see measurable impact in days, not months or years like many research environments.
'
Now, at Citadel Securities, which is one of the top high-speed trading firms in the world, handling around 35% of US retail stock trades, he'll be helping improve the systems that help in global trading.
Kairan Quasi's previous experiences
Kairan Quazi grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. He interned at Intel Labs at the age of 10, before completing his college education, and later worked at Blackbird.AI in 2022. A significant part of his interest in finance also stemmed from his mother, who works as an investment banker in mergers and acquisitions. That blend of tech know-how and financial understanding helped shape the path he's on today, according to Wikipedia.
Twitter previously banned his account
Beyond his resume, Quazi has faced age-related biases. In 2023, LinkedIn banned his account for being underage, which he called 'illogical, primitive nonsense,' questioning how one could be qualified to work at SpaceX but not to access a professional networking platform.

Aadhaar to be used for Starlink KYC, says UIDAI
SpaceX's satellite internet service Starlink will use Aadhaar to validate Indian users under Know-Your-Customer (KYC) rules, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) announced on Wednesday. The Elon Musk-owned service has already obtained orbital slot appointments and a Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), but is yet to roll out. Parnil Urdhwareshe, Director at Starlink India, was with UIDAI CEO Bhuwnesh Kumar, where Starlink officially registered as a Sub-Authentication User Agency and Sub-eKYC user agency, allowing it to accept Aadhaar details from customers for the purpose of authenticating them. 'The use of Aadhaar authentication by a global satellite internet provider demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India's digital infrastructure,' UIDAI said in a statement. 'Aadhaar e-KYC will facilitate the onboarding of users seamlessly, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while delivering high-speed internet to households, businesses, and institutions.' Starlink has not started operations, even as its services have become available in recent weeks in Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The DoT is yet to administratively allot spectrum to the firm, and it is also likely working on compliance with security conditions imposed on GMPCS authorisation holders shortly before it received approval.

State lags in renewable energy generation despite huge potential
Ranchi: Jharkhand has made modest progress in renewable energy sector despite possessing ample resources, stated the 'Powering Progress: Jharkhand's renewable energy and storage potential' report released on the occasion of Renewable Energy Day on Wednesday. The study by the Jharkhand Sustainable Just Transition Task Force and the Centre for Environment and Energy Development (CEED) assessed renewable energy potential across 24 districts of the state. "Renewable sources contribute just seven per cent to the state's energy production. While Jharkhand has an estimated renewable energy and storage potential of 66 gigawatt (GW), its installed capacity stands at only 434 megawatts (MW) as of 2024-25 FY. The gap between the potential and the actual energy generation was due to the lack of detailed and actionable research at the block and district levels," the report stated. Out of the 66 GW energy potential, the state has an estimated potential of 46 GW from various renewable energy technologies and 20 GW from pumped hydro energy storage. Giridih, Ranchi, Gumla, West Singhbhum, Hazaribag, Palamu, and Chatra districts were identified as high-potential areas for generation of renewable energy and integrated renewable energy planning with district-specific targets for renewable energy were recommended. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Task force chairperson AK Rastogi said, "The report presents the first of its kind comprehensive, high-resolution assessment of renewable energy potential across all 24 districts of Jharkhand, which can provide a transformative opportunity redefining the state's economic and environmental future. This assessment will fill the gap and demonstrate that the transition from coal-dependent energy systems to renewable sources is not just environmentally imperative but economically compelling, offering pathways to create green jobs while attracting investments in the state. " Applauding the state govt's initiative, CEED CEO Ramapati Kumar said, "The state can ensure energy security, economic diversification, and climate resilience while setting a benchmark for eastern India's clean energy future by embracing its renewable potential. CEED is proud to provide steadfast support to the task force and the state govt in pursuit of low-carbon development pathways."
