Rihanna, A$AP Rocky watch Denzel Washington award in Cannes
The two-time Oscar-winning actor was presented with an honorary Palme d'Or by festival chiefs Thierry Fremaux and Iris Knobloch before the screening, where A$AP Rocky and Rihanna were among the VIPs.
A$AP Rocky is Washington's co-star in "Highest 2 Lowest", extending an acting career that includes "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You" by Mary Bronstein, which showed at the Berlin film festival in February.
Before handing over the prize to Washington, Fremaux introduced a montage of Washington's memorable performances including in "Malcolm X" and "Mo' Better Blues", both directed by Lee.
Clips were also shown from "Glory", which earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1989, and "Training Day", for which he won best actor in 2002.
The cast of "Highest 2 Lowest" put on a show on the Cannes red carpet, with Spike Lee in an orange pinstripe suit, round glasses and an orange-and-blue hat, and A$AP Rocky showing off a gold dental piece.
Although Cannes usually hands out honorary awards in dedicated ceremonies, it is not unusual for actors to receive them unexpectedly —- as happened with Harrison Ford at the premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" in 2023.

Dolly Parton becomes Guinness World Records icon
As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, Guinness World Records has honoured US country star Dolly Parton as one of their icons. The company – which lists world record achievements – has given Parton, 79, an Icon certificate, presented to her at her studios in Nashville, Tennessee, celebrating the fact that the 'Jolene' singer holds 11 record-breaking titles. These include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist. Parton was also the first country singer to be nominated for the EGOT – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – aka the 'Grand Slam of showbusiness'. Craig Glenday, editor in chief at Guinness World Records, said: 'Dolly is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated writers and performers in the history of country music, as reflected in her many Guinness World Records certificates, but her reach and influence extends far beyond the musical world.' He added: 'There are so many projects close to her heart – poverty relief, education, medical research and of course the Imagination Library free-books campaign – and it's these important, life-changing initiatives that propels Dolly into a different league. She truly is a living legend, and it's an honour to bestow GWR Icon status upon her.' Parton's charitable and philanthropic work includes the Dollywood Foundation, founded in 1988. The institution champions the education of children in her home state of Tennessee. As for her literacy initiative, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, it has distributed more than 285 million books globally since 1995. Besides her music career, Parton has starred in films like 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, and earned two original song Oscar nominations for '9 to 5', and 'Travelin' Thru from Transamerica' from the film Transamerica. In June, it was announced that she would be honoured in November with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award – an Oscar statuette presented to Hollywood figures renowned for 'promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities'. Guinness World Records published its first book in London in 1955 and has sold more than 143 million copies in over 100 countries since then. The Icon certificate has previously been awarded to stars including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John.

Old photo misrepresented as Lee Jae Myung's recent vacation
A post shared on Facebook on August 4, 2025 claimed the photo showed Lee and First Lady Kim Hye Kyung enjoying a holiday at the beach. Text seen in the screenshot reads: "The president is on vacation, Lee Jae Myung and first lady Kim Hye Kyung" and "Watersports are best when the country is flooded." The post surfaced as torrential rains triggered flooding and caused damage across parts of South Korea (archived link). Image Screenshot of the misleading Facebook post, captured August 4, 2025. Orange X added by AFP Other posts sharing the same image suggest it was taken as Lee is on summer leave from August 4 to 8 in the coastal South Gyeongsang province, South Korean newspaper Hankyoreh reported, citing the presidential office (archived link). "People are dying and this guy is photographed in a swimsuit, how can we call him our leader," reads one comment left in the post. Another comment reads, "The economy is dying and people are suffering but he chooses to take a swim." But the photo is old and does not show Lee on holiday in 2025. Combined reverse image and keyword searches show the same picture was posted to Lee's verified Facebook account on August 28, 2017 (archived link). Image Screenshot comparison between the photo shared with the misleading claim (left) and the original photo posted in August 2017 on Lee's Facebook page (right) In the caption, he wrote about filming for the reality show "Same Bed, Different Dreams," a program featuring celebrity couples which aired that month on SBS (archived link). A segment from the show available on YouTube shows Lee and Kim wearing the same swimsuits while surfing at the beach (archived link). At the time, Lee was serving as mayor of Seongnam, a city south of Seoul. Similar photos of the couple at the beach were also published in multiple local reports about the TV program at the time (archived here and here). Lee is a frequent target of disinformation online which AFP previously debunked multiple times.

Levi Strauss & Co. debuts The Denim Cowboy with Beyoncé
The Levi's® brand, in collaboration with global icon Beyoncé, today debuted The Denim Cowboy, the final instalment of the year-long Levi's® REIIMAGINE campaign. The film weaves together the three previous chapters, revealing the campaign as more than a reinterpretation of iconic Levi's® advertisements - it is the creation of a new narrative centred on empowerment and rewriting the rules. Shown throughout The Denim Cowboy are Levi's® icons and hero pieces from the new BEYONCÉ x LEVI'S® denim collection that serve as the film's uniform and latest cornerstone of the partnership with Beyoncé, highlighting the brand's denim lifestyle leadership. Set to an exclusive edit of the "Levi's Jeans" soundtrack from the Grammy Award-winning album, Cowboy Carter, the 90-second film includes new scenes and extended cuts from the previously released Launderette, Pool Hall and Refrigerator films - all inspired by classic Levi's® advertisements from the '80s and '90s. Once again, the Levi's® brand partnered with Grammy Award-winning director Melina Matsoukas to bring this vision to life. Recontextualising the previous chapters and unveiling new details, The Denim Cowboy reveals that Beyoncé's winning prize from the pool game is none other than the local shark's 501® jeans, played by award-winning actor, Timothy Olyphant (Justified, Deadwood). Beyoncé stuns in a crystalised '90s Shrunken Trucker paired with the 501® Curve jeans, a new and ground breaking 501® silhouette designed to celebrate and fit curves without compromising the authentic straight-leg silhouette that makes the 501® so timeless and enduring. Channelling the bold glamour first unveiled in Pool Hall, the Western Crystal '90s Shrunken Trucker and Western Crystal 501® Curve jeans emerge as the standout statement pieces of the BEYONCÉ X LEVI'S® denim collection. "The Denim Cowboy marks the culmination of the ground breaking Levi's® REIIMAGINE campaign, marking the final celebration of a partnership that has explored reinvention and reinterpretation at every turn," said Kenny Mitchell, Global Chief Marketing Officer of the Levi's® brand at Levi Strauss & Co. "The campaign represents a new level and scale of collaboration that has put women at the centre of the narrative, and set in motion a new, iconic chapter in Levi's® history that continues to reaffirm the brand's place at the centre of culture." The partnership reached a dazzling crescendo during Beyoncé's final performances of COWBOY CARTER TOUR in Las Vegas where the icon's entire dance crew lit up the stage in the shimmering new pieces from the BEYONCÉ X LEVI'S® denim collection - looks inspired by the bold spirit of the ongoing REIIMAGINE campaign. The BEYONCÉ X LEVI'S® denim collection - including the Western Crystal '90s Shrunken Trucker (250 dollars) and the Western Crystal 501® Curve (150 dollars) - along with two other head-to-toe denim sets will be available starting August 4th on and globally August 7th on and select Levi's® stores. The Denim Cowboy launches with a fully integrated global campaign, including television, digital, social media, and out-of-home. The campaign maintains the Levi's® tradition of working with the most celebrated creative talents of our time. Matsoukas collaborated with Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Marcell Rév and acclaimed photographer Mason Poole to capture the visual essence of the REIIMAGINE campaign, adding another layer to the rich tapestry of iconic Levi's® campaigns.
