Cuddly toys get their own beds at Japanese hotel

Times3 days ago
In Japan, even adults treat their stuffed animals to trips, dinner dates and visits to museums. Now a hotel in Osaka is letting people give their nuigurumi a good night's rest after a busy day out.
Nui-katsu — 'doing things with stuffed animals' — has become increasingly popular, especially on social media where people share pictures of their favourite soft toys at events such as Expo 2025 in Osaka.

The hotel chain Toyoko Inn is hoping to cater for the the trend by offering mini-beds, complete with bedclothes and tiny pyjamas, so the toys can sleep beside their owners for an extra 300 yen (£1.50).
A hotel representative, who led the project, told the J-Cast News website that he often travelled with a stuffed animal, and hoped the service would appeal to Gen Z travellers.
'I thought that if Toyoko Inn has a plan where you can stay with your dog, we should be able to offer something similar for stuffed animals,' he said. 'We've kept it to the bare minimum so that stuffed animals can stay with peace of mind at a stable price, just like at Toyoko Inn, and created this set with the idea of a sleepover together in mind.'

The service has been introduced as a trial at the Toyoko Inn Osaka Dome, and has exceeded expectations. The representative said the company was seeking to expand the project.
The response online has been overwhelmingly positive. The hotel's website encourages guests to take photographs of their toys, and offers a small gift if they show a social media post with the hashtag #ForYourOshiActivityToyokoInn at the front desk.

'What a cute and perfectly sized bed!! Getting ready in pyjamas too,' one guest wrote on X under a post showing a stuffed horse and a unicorn sharing the small bed.
Another wrote: 'It was just the right size and absolutely adorable. The stuffies are sleeping soundly in dreamland.'

From Byron to Elvis, history's most adored sex symbols: Swoon by Bea Martinez-Gatell

Swoon by Bea Martinez-Gatell (Biteback £22, 368pp) During one performance on Taylor Swift 's Eras tour in 2023, fans dancing in a Seattle stadium generated seismic activity to the equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake. On hearing of the death of Hollywood heartthrob Rudolph Valentino, a pair of Japanese schoolgirls dived into a fiery volcano. And while doggedly pursuing the mad, bad and dangerous-to-know Lord Byron, Lady Caroline Lamb sent the poet a lock of her own pubic hair complete with the blood from slightly too close a cut. Bea Martinez-Gatell's Swoon, a raucous prehistory of the fangirl, proves that rather than vacuous and foolish, fangirls have always been the 'central engine of pop culture'. She begins with Byron, as he is arguably the mould from which all modern celebrities are cast. His public and private personas, his affair with Caroline Lamb, his failed marriage to her cousin Annabella, his supposed incestuous affair with his half-sister, and the cult-like devotion his poetry garnered would slot him perfectly into today's media culture. Women adored the 'Byronic Hero' depicted in his poetry, but to the men in society Byron was a rakish, corrupting force from whom no woman was safe. Replicas of this 'Hero' are found throughout literature – most famously Emily Bronte's Heathcliff. After 'Byronmania' came 'Lisztomania'. According to Martinez-Gatell, 19th century composer Franz Liszt was the 'first proper pop star'. A beautiful young protege, he stole the hearts of Europe's elites. Hans Christian Andersen described how when he entered the room 'it was as if a ray of sunshine passed on every face', but when Liszt sat down at the piano, he 'was a demon nailed fast to the instrument'. There was something about the way he played that took emotional hold of women. The turn of the century brought with it Rudolph Valentino, a southern Italian who rose to peak swooniness in 1921's The Sheik. His dark good looks captured the hearts of women all over the world and struck fear into the hearts of many husbands. He was 'the physical embodiment of desire'. As the American film magazine Photoplay put it, after the premiere of The Sheik, 'never in the history of the screen has the public fallen so prostrate before an idol as they have before Rudolph Valentino'. Swiftly following on from Valentino were two of the swooniest crooners of all time – Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. One night, at New York's Paramount Theatre, a girl was so overcome when Ol' Blue Eyes walked on stage that she fainted. As for Elvis, his gyrating hips made him a 'cultural lightning rod'. Then came four boys from Liverpool, who aligned themselves perfectly with the 'sexually charged winds of change' that were sweeping the country. The Beatles' lyrics brought the realisation that 'sex, emotion and desire were shared experiences' and their special brand of vulnerability took over the world. Nor was their popularity limited to teenage girls. At a party at the British Embassy in Washington, one older man slipped behind Ringo and snipped off a lock of his hair. Caroline Lamb would be proud...

'Insecure people, diet culture, toxic men' But the SylvanianDrama TikTok account sees the creatures in costumes and fake eyelashes, with captions saying things like "My marriage is falling apart" and "My boyfriend won't post me on Instagram".Court documents filed by Epoch with the Southern District of New York on 4 July and seen by the BBC accuse Ms Von Engelbrechten of infringing the company's copyright without its permission, causing irreparable injury to its goodwill and court document states that in an interview with influencer marketing company Fohr, Ms Von Engelbrechten said her inspiration for the storylines came from "cringey TV shows and early 2000s comedy".She went on: "I'm also really inspired by my cats because they are extremely sassy and self-obsessed and can be so cute, but they also have no morals when it comes to killing other animals. I try to embody that with the Sylvanians."Asked why she thought her videos were so popular she told Fohr: "Maybe it's because it's coming from the voice of a 22-year-old who struggles with the same things as [they do]. I have a lot of storylines about insecure people, diet culture, toxic men, and sustainability, which I think other girls my age are also thinking a lot about." A date has been set for 14 August for a pre-trial conference. This is when legal teams from both sides meet to explore settlement options or prepare the case for Company Ltd and Ms Von Engelbrechten did not respond to the BBC's requests for comment.

Wall to Wall (2025) Ending Explained – Why does Woo-sung burn the ledger?

Wall to Wall Plot Summary Helmed by Kim Tae-joon, who is known for his iconic Netflix thriller, Unlocked, Wall to Wall has all the makings of an adrenaline-filled, gritty mystery. Along with Kang Ha-neul, the cast includes familiar faces such as Seo Hyeon-woo, Yeom Hye-ran, Jeon Jin-oh, Park Sung-il and Kang Ae-sim. Wall to Wall is said to be a psychological thriller, complete with mind games, twisted schemes and traitorous characters. Real estate rates are skyrocketing and Seoulites have to bend over backwards to even rent a place. Noh Woo-sung gets what he thinks is the deal of a lifetime, even though he has to take out a hefty loan to buy the apartment. 3 years later, he is unable to pay his bills and his neighbours are making his life miserable. He is what they call 'house poor' as he now owns an apartment but cannot afford anything else. The rates are going down and he cannot sell it without going into a heavy loss. One day, he is confronted by his downstairs neighbour who blames him for the constant noise coming from the unit above him. He decides to take matters into his own hands but for the life of him, he cannot find the source of the noise. Is he imagining things or is someone out to get him? Who is the source of the noise? The residents of 1301 and Reporter Yeong Jin-ho from 1501 are responsible for the noise. To make it seem like Woo-sung is responsible, the noise is heard only when he is home. 1501 hacks into everyone's security system and uses the intercom camera to keep a tab on Woo-sung's whereabouts. When 1501 wants to look innocent, 1301 makes the noise while he visits Woo-sung. To stop Woo-sung from cashing in on his crypto stocks and leaving the place, 1501 breaks into his place and installs a speaker and plays construction sound. He then gathers all the residents to create a ruckus. The husband from 1301 pretends to get hit so that Woo-sung is arrested and unable to sell his crypto stocks. Why does 1501 target Woo-sung? 1501 has a grudge against the building representative, landlord and former prosecutor, Jeon Eun-hwa, as she is responsible for burying his exposé on the poor construction and corruption involving the apartment complex. However, he is quite psychotic and has no qualms about killing other people to expose her. Out of all the residents and tenants, Woo-sung lives alone and can be framed easily. He isn't likeable either, so it is easy for 1501 to turn the other residents against him. To create a sensational story that no one can bury or ignore, 1501 plans to kill some of the residents, including Mrs Jeon. He will then frame Woo-sung, kill him and make it look like a suicide. After stealing Jeon's ledger which records the corruption, the new exposé will have proof and paint the building's poor construction as the reason for Woo-sung's breakdown. Because of 1301's premature death, 1501 is forced to rush his plans and Woo-sung makes him doubt his success. This way, he is able to save himself as he allies with 1501. What is Mrs Jeon's plan? Mrs Jeon secretly buys as many units as she can with the money she got during her stint as a corrupt prosecutor. While she takes advantage of Woo-sung's situation and buys his unit at a much lower price, she doesn't want the property value to drop. Via her contacts, she knows that there will be a metro line running near the complex which will instantly raise the property value. She can then sell them at a much higher price than she bought them or rent them out. Why does Woo-sung burn the ledger? While 1501 searches for the ledger, Woo-sung frees Mrs Jeon and tries to use an air gun on 1501. All hell breaks loose as Mr Jeon stabs 1501 before dying. Mrs Jeon tries to convince Woo-sung to kill 1501. He is unable to decide, and annoyed, she beats him up. She is about to kill him but a heavily wounded 1501 kills her. The ledger and all the apartment purchases are hidden in plain sight. 1501 orders Woo-sung to give him the ledger but the man has had enough. Woo-sung burns the ledger and the contract which is proof of the Jeons buying his apartment. He causes a gas leak and leaves right before the apartment explodes. Due to the arrest, Woo-sung is unable to cash in on his crypto stocks and loses all his money. Even though he owns his apartment again, the property value would go down if the ledger were shown to the public. It is why he burns it. What is the noise at the end of the movie? At the end of the movie, Woo-sung moves in with his mother but we see that the noise in the apartment complex continues when he visits. He looks at his ownership papers and laughs. One can interpret the noise as PTSD and him laughing at the absurdity of it all. Another way it can be interpreted is that the noise is real and no matter what, noisy neighbours are a part of life, as Mrs Jeon puts it. Read More: Wall to Wall Movie Review
