
Hurricane Erin sparks huge waves and evacuations in North Carolina's Outer Banks
The storm was tracking northward, running roughly parallel to the east coast, according to the US's National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami. Though not projected to strike the mainland, Erin is expected to expand in size and generate hazardous rip currents in the upcoming days.

Erin became the Atlantic's first hurricane of 2025, intensifying rapidly to a category 5 on Saturday before weakening. It then regained strength, knocked out power to more than 147,000 utility customers in Puerto Rico, and finally dropped to category 2 status on Tuesday morning.
The storm had sustained winds of 110 mph while moving north-west at 7 mph. Its center was located about 665 miles south-west of Bermuda and 720 miles south-south-east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
The storm's rapid growth ranks it among the fastest-intensifying hurricanes ever observed in the Atlantic, highlighting scientists' warnings that the climate crisis – driven by greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans – is fueling more rapid storm strengthening.
Category 2 hurricanes carry sustained winds of 96 to 110mph. Erin was just shy of category 3, the threshold for what forecasters call a 'major' storm that is capable of severe destruction, with winds starting at 111mph.
Even without a direct hurricane warning, Hatteras and Ocracoke islands were ordered to evacuate. Officials fear that North Carolina state highway 12 (NC 12), the narrow route linking the communities, will be heavily damaged or swept away, leaving residents isolated for days or even weeks.
In the Outer Banks, roughly 3,500 locals are accustomed to occasional cutoffs from the mainland – but the tens of thousands of tourists currently visiting are not.
'We haven't seen waves of that size in a while and the vulnerable spots have only gotten weaker in the past five years,' Reide Corbett, executive director of the Coastal Studies Institute, told the Associated Press.
'Water, water everywhere. That really resonates on the Outer Banks,' Corbett said.
The northern areas around Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, home to the region's densest development, are outside the evacuation zone. But to the south, across Oregon Inlet, lies Hatteras Island, which relies solely on NC 12 for access. Beyond that is Ocracoke Island, which can only be reached by plane or ferry.
Highways were first built there more than six decades ago. Since then, the remote fishing communities transformed into a booming tourist destination, now dotted with thousands of oversized vacation homes.

When storms strike, ocean and sound waters often breach dunes, burying the road under sand and debris. Severe events can tear apart pavement or carve out entirely new inlets, forcing temporary bridges.
Throughout the 2010s, the North Carolina department of transportation spent more than $1m annually just to keep NC 12 open, plus roughly $50m over the decade for storm-related repairs.
Despite the expense, Dare county generates about $2bn annually from tourism, ensuring that the cycle of rebuilding continues. But repairs are not quick. Hurricanes Isabel in 2003 and Irene in 2011 both created new inlets that required two months of ferry service until bridges were installed.
Rising sea levels, driven by climate change-related warming temperatures and melting ice, add to the danger. With much of the Outer Banks only a few feet above sea level, even minor erosion can have major effects, such as in Rodanthe, the community that juts furthest into the Atlantic.
Since 2020, more than a dozen homes in Rodanthe have collapsed into the sea. Authorities believe at least two more vacant houses could be lost if Erin's surf is as intense as predicted.

Terrifying moment tornado sweeps through Spanish town sending tables and chairs flying as country continues to battle wildfires amid freak heatwave weather
This is the dramatic moment Spain 's crazy summer weather takes another twist as a tornado sweeps away tables and chairs at cafe terraces and reduces visibility to near zero. A 'Satan's Storm' hit the Costa Tropical south of Granada on Sunday, forcing holidaymakers and locals to evacuate beaches in resorts like Motril east of Malaga and leading to seven emergency rescues. Two tornadoes and waterspouts formed during the rare heat burst as the temperature rose rapidly to more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8°C) and winds reached 53mph. Overnight footage emerged of a tornado that swept through Librilla less than an hour's drive inland from La Manga in Murcia. The freak weather forced the town hall to cancel a BBQ event organised as part of its annual summer festival because of the fire risk if it went ahead. Local police said the high winds were carrying away embers that could cause wildfires. A woman was filmed holding a giant bar terrace parasol as the tornado swept away chairs and street rubbish containers behind her - before a sudden stronger gust of wind moved her and the sunshade she was gripping and she had to let go as tables nearby smashed into her. The area where the BBQ had been organised was turned into a dustbowl. An electricity pylon was also snapped in half and brought down by the force of the wind. Local police said in a statement: 'A tornado has carried away sunshades, chairs and tables at bars as it swept through Librilla. 'The town hall has had to cancel its 'Night of Migas' BBQ event because of the fire risk as the tornado carried away tables and chairs people had put out and even embers. 'Our officers and Civil Protection workers are still dealing with incidents involving fallen trees and lampposts.' The freak weather event came as Spanish emergency responders continued to battle 21 wildfires in different areas of the country that have led to the evacuation of more than 33,000 people, especially in the regions of Galicia, Castilla and Leon and Extremadura. Authorities say 33 people have been arrested since June 1 on suspicion of arson. Four people have died so far as a result of the wildfires. Many areas have registered record temperatures, with the thermometer in the city of Jerez de la Frontera in south-west Spain marking an astonishing 45,8 degrees Celsisus (114.4 degrees Fahrenheit) at 2.30pm on Sunday. This marks the country's most devastating wildfire season since records began, with more than 1,100 deaths linked to the recent heatwave that has fuelled the blaze. Some 373,000 hectares have been scorched as of 7am Tuesday, according to the European Forest Fire Information System - an area twice the size of London. Weather agency Aemet has now confirmed the 16-day heatwave Spain has suffered, the third-longest on record, is now over. Hurricane Erin live updates: Storm threatens East Coast, Outer Banks
Category 3 Hurricane Erin had 115 mph winds, with gusts up to 155 mph early Tuesday, and had slowed to a 7 mph crawl, as it battled headwinds, the National Hurricane Center said. It appeared to begin making the long forecast northward turn that will steer it away from a landfall on the U.S. mainland, the center said. But given its large and expanding wind fields, storm-driven waves, coastal erosion, and high seas are expected to batter areas of the coast, especially along the Outer Banks, the barrier islands that fringe the coast of North Carolina. At 5 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Erin was about 675 miles southwest of Bermuda and 750 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras. It's forecast to plod a path between the two on Thursday. "Erin forecast to substantially grow in size while moving over the western Atlantic through the week," National Hurricane Center Meteorologist Robbie Berg wrote in a public advisory. "Dangerous rip currents expected along U.S. East Coast beaches." Erin's strength could still fluctuate before it finally begins to wind down later in the week, according to the center's forecast. Tropical storm and storm surge watches are in effect for parts of the Outer Banks and coastal North Carolina, which means tropical storm winds and higher-than-normal sea levels are possible. The hurricane center warned that storm surge could cause the water to rise 2 to 4 feet above dry ground along the Outer Banks as Erin pushes northward. The storm-tossed ocean is forecast to wash over low-lying portions of the islands and render the main transportation route, Highway 12, impassable in several locations for several days. Dangerous conditions in the surf zone with large, breaking waves are forecast from East Central Florida to Canada's Atlantic Coast beginning Tuesday, Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan has warned. Brennan is pleading with U.S. residents to take Erin's potential coastal impacts seriously, even though the nation will be spared a direct landfall. Offshore wave heights could exceed 20 to 30 feet. High tides are also expected to bring higher-than-normal water levels further southward along the coast, the weather service has warned. "It's not going to be a safe environment to be in the ocean," Brennan said, adding that even when the weather may be pleasant on shore, dangerous and possibly life-threatening rip currents could be lurking in the water. Because of its slow movement, coastal areas of North Carolina are expected to feel the brunt of the ocean's impacts for several days, according to the weather service office in Newport/Morehead City. Mandatory evacuations were issued Aug. 18 for Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. At its closest point, Erin is forecast to be about 200 miles off Cape Hatteras. Erin's mean diameter at 11 p.m. on Aug. 18 was roughly 355 miles, but the storm was creating 10-foot seas across an area of the Atlantic Ocean roughly 645 miles in diameter, according to hurricane center data. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center, with the greatest distance on the eastern side of the storm. Further south along the North Carolina coast, emergency officials rescued at least 60 people caught in rip currents and heavy surf on Aug. 18 in Wrightsville Beach, prompting a "no swimming" advisory through Friday. Following behind Erin is yet another tropical wave that's given a 60% chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next seven days, the hurricane center said. A third disturbance just moved off the West African coast, but it's expected to encounter hostile conditions that may limit its further development. Erin formed on Aug. 11 from a tropical wave that moved across the Cabo Verde Islands. By Aug. 15, it was a hurricane and quickly joined the ranks of the fastest intensifying hurricanes in Atlantic history, increasing its winds by 85 mph in about 21 hours. It has mostly spared the islands along the Eastern Caribbean but soaked Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and portions of the Southeastern Bahamas with up to 8 inches of rain. Its winds caused widespread power outages in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Though the Atlantic hurricane season that started June 1 is forecast to be more active than normal, Dan Brown, branch chief of the center's hurricane specialists, said that Erin's formation has no bearing on what may happen later in the season. And Leroy Silvers, a research scientist at Colorado State University, pointed out that it only takes one intense landfalling hurricane to make it a disastrous season.
