Men's conference hopes to bolster positive masculinity in Montclair

Pastor Caleb Sookhoo, public relations officer of the spiritual crime prevention, said the conference brought together a panel of prominent speakers who tackled major issues facing men and communities in SA today.

Advocate Vuyisile Mafuna – National Prosecuting Authority.
Dr. Donovan Andrews – Thuthuzela Care Centre.
Lieutenant Colonel Velu Perumal Moodley, Montclair police station's acting station commander and one of the co-keynote speakers, called on men to reclaim their role as protectors. 'We need to have a community that stands in unity. Men need to take the lead and lead with integrity,' he said.
A highlight of the conference was the address by keynote speaker Ravi Naidoo, a former gang leader and ex-prisoner who was among the infamous Phoenix 5. A former death row prisoner who received a presidential pardon from Nelson Mandela, Naidoo delivered an emotional testimony of redemption and personal renewal that moved many in the audience.

Sookhoo emphasised on the broader purpose of the conference, which was creating a safe space for men to process their trauma and reframe stories of masculinity.
'Boys don't cry is a proverb that we all have heard at some point in our lives. The problem with that statement is that it teaches boys who will become men not to process emotions in a healthy way. Points of trauma gets bottled up and negative emotions start to fester within us. Toxic masculinity needs to be addressed. Men cannot be ashamed of being men. Healthy masculinity is needed more than ever and we must teach our boys and men how to feel and take responsibility in a healthy manner,' he shared.
A question-and-answer session enabled the audience to engage directly with the speakers, including Naidoo, in frank discussion about crime prevention, emotional wellness and the role of men in building safer communities.
Pastor Sookhoo said the large turnout was indicator on the need for talks and more platforms like this.

One killed in fiery N2 crash near Gingindlovu A devastating crash on the N2 near Gingindlovu on Sunday night claimed one life and left four others, including two young children, injured. Sunday N2 crash claims one life
One person was confirmed deceased in a horrific accident on the N2 on Sunday night, while a further four were injured. The accident involving three vehicles occurred at about 7pm in the vicinity of Fairbreeze mine. According to IPSS Medical Services whose paramedics were on scene, four people, who had been travelling in an SUV, sustained injuries ranging in severity. These included a man (34) and woman (31), who both sustained critical injuries, and their two children, aged 4 and 2, who were moderately injured. After being stabilised on scene, they were rushed to hospital for further medical care. The second vehicle – a hatchback – burst into flames, causing the sole occupant to become entrapped and sustain fatal injuries. In a statement released by the KZN Department of Transport, departmental spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said, after a forensic investigation it was confirmed that one person from the vehicle that burst into flames had sustained fatal injuries. This after it was initially thought that more people had been travelling in the hatchback. The third vehicle – a minibus taxi – was carrying seven passengers, none of whom were injured and continued with their journey to Durban. Don't have the ZO app? MEC sends condolences to families of crash victims
MEC for Transport & Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has expressed his condolences to the families of the five people who died in an horrific accident in Bergville today (August 3). The accident happened along the P288 in the Bergville area. Duma said he has sent a team to ensure that they locate the families of the victims. Also read: R12 million for road projects in Driefontein and Acaciavale He committed the department's support to the families during this difficult period. 'Importantly, our focus is to ease the burden on their shoulders. We will work with them to co-ordinate the funeral. We know that each family has a special need and we will work with them throughout the week. We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery. May the departed souls rest in peace,' said Duma.
