Not here for fame, but to contribute to cinema: Rajkummar Rao on 15 years in movies
From playing supporting roles in 'Rann', 'Gangs of Wasseypur', 'Talaash', and 'Kai Po Che!', the actor gradually moved to leading man roles in movies 'Shahid', 'Aligarh', 'Trapped', 'Newton', 'Bareilly Ki Barfi', 'Badhaai Do', 'Stree 2', and 'Bhool Chuk Maaf'.
'When people think of me after many years, I want them to think of me with a lot of respect, somebody who took his work seriously and who was here for the right reasons, for the right intentions, and not for fame, but to contribute to our cinema,' Rao, who made his debut in Bollywood with a three-second role in Amitabh Bachchan-starrer 'Rann' in 2010, told PTI in an interview.
The 40-year-old actor said he feels blessed that over the years, audiences have connected with his work.
'When a film works, you can see that a film has genuinely worked. Now, people think every figure that is coming out is a bogus figure, but it's not like that. It's like saying every actor calls the media or they don't, no, it's not true. I don't, I haven't called the media ever in my life.
"I talk to my producers and distributors to know about how the film , and they won't lie to me. They would tell me exactly what happened. When you go to theatres, there is an audience, which is almost full or 70-80% full, you know people are coming and watching the film. That's the only way to judge whether it's working or not,' Rao said.
Rao is excited to step into the role of an action hero in the highly anticipated film 'Maalik', directed by Pulkit of 'Bhakshak' fame.
Sharing his long-standing desire to dive into action genre, the actor said, 'It was not the first time somebody offered me an action film; I was offered this genre before, but I couldn't connect with those stories. But when I read this , I thought it was such a powerful story about this guy's rise; the arc was beautiful.'
Citing the example of his roles in 'Srikanth' and 'Mr and Mrs Mahi', Rao said he is eager to push the envelope further.
I was missing seeing myself doing something very different. Like last year, I'm glad 'Srikanth' happened, it was very different from 'Mahi'. I want to do something that maybe I don't expect out of myself," he said.
While the actor has dabbled in the world of gangsters before, most notably in the black crime comedy series 'Guns and Gulaabs' and the 2017 film 'Omerta', where he played a terrorist, he said that 'Maalik' is completely different.
'This one is a full-blown action film. It's one of those, massy, big commercial action films with the heart in its right place. There's a great story attached to it, and there are great characters. So, it's very, very different from whatever I've done to date,' the actor said, adding he approached the role of a gangster in 'Maalik' without any preconceived notions.
'I wanted to go like a clean blank paper and put everything together with my imagination, with everyone's help around me, with Pulkit's vision that he had for 'Maalik',' Rao added.
His favourite films in the genre are Gopal Varma's 'Shiva' and Anurag Kashyap's 'Gangs of Wasseypur'.
'There were things that actors wouldn't do in the 70s, 80s, but now it seems very normal for actors to do that. Same with action, with the more violence in the film, it was not okay to do that in the 80s, 90s, 2000, but now it's fine.
"It's always evolving, sometimes you go back to basics, sometimes you want to push it forward. It's a part and parcel of the process,' the actor said, adding that his favourite action stars are Bruce Lee, Hugh Jackman, and Amitabh Bachchan.
'Maalik' also features Manushi Chhillar, Saurabh Shukla, Saurabh Sachdeva, Prosenjit Chatterjee, and Swanand Kirkire.
Produced by Kumar Taurani under the Tips Films banner and Jay Shewakramani's Northern Lights Films, the movie is slated to release in cinemas on July 11.

Mahua Moitra CONFESSES Crush On Pankaj Tripathi: 'I Wrote Him A Note, Asked For Coffee'
Mahua Moitra reveals she has a crush on Pankaj Tripathi. She wrote him a note asking for coffee but never got a reply. 'He's the coolest actor,' she says. In a moment of unfiltered candour that lit up the internet, fiery politician Mahua Moitra momentarily set aside her parliamentary swordplay to reveal a softer, fangirl side — her unabashed admiration for actor Pankaj Tripathi. The Trinamool Congress MP, known for her razor-sharp rhetoric and fierce presence in the Lok Sabha, opened up about her unexpected Bollywood crush in a conversation with India Today. 'I watched the Munnabhai series, and I will watch it again. I watched Vicky Donor, and I loved it. I love Pankaj Tripathi. I watched the entire Mirzapur series. I even wrote him a note, which he never replied to, but yes, I wrote him a note," she confessed, grinning. Moitra didn't hold back her admiration for Tripathi's range as an actor, especially his dark, menacing roles. 'He is my crush. I think he is the coolest actor. I love the mean bad roles he does. I loved him in Mirzapur, even in Gangs of Wasseypur," she added. But it didn't end there. She also shared the details of her (unanswered) love letter: 'I said I am a big fan and I would love to meet you for a coffee. But apparently, he stays in Alibagh, and he doesn't meet anyone for coffee." The opportunity arose when she found out through a TV anchor that Pankaj was to be interviewed next. 'This happened when I was being interviewed by an anchor. She said, 'I'm going to interview him next — Pankaj Tripathi.' So I asked her to give him a note," Mahua recalled. And in a moment straight out of a rom-com, Mahua turned to fellow Parliamentarian and Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan for help. 'I asked Ravi for an interaction," she revealed. 'He actually made me speak to him on the phone. But I was so shy, I forgot I even sent him a note!" The actor in question, Pankaj Tripathi, has been a consistent darling of critics and audiences alike — from his breakout in Gangs of Wasseypur to the calm yet calculating Kaleen Bhaiya in Mirzapur, to nuanced performances in Newton, Mimi, and Stree. He recently starred in Anurag Basu's Metro… In Dino alongside Konkona Sen Sharma, and was lauded for his return as Advocate Madhav Mishra in Criminal Justice Season 3. Tripathi will soon reprise his iconic Kaleen Bhaiya avatar in Mirzapur: The Film, set to release in 2026. He also stars in Stree 3 and will be reuniting with OMG 2 director Amit Rai for a yet-to-be-titled socially driven drama set in Bihar. While the actor may not have replied to Mahua's heartfelt note (yet), one thing is clear — even in India's political arena, Pankaj Tripathi's quiet charisma is winning votes of a different kind. Adoor Gopalakrishnan justifies remarks on film funding for women, marginalised
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 4 (PTI) Eminent filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Monday justified his remarks on the Kerala government's project to promote filmmakers from marginalised sections and said his statements were intended to empower them and improve their technical knowledge. He said he wanted women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST sections to continue in the film industry, and that's why he wanted them to undergo expert training in movie making and on how to utilise government funding. Speaking to reporters here, the veteran said he was not responsible for the interpretations made by the media about his statements during the government-organised film conclave on Sunday. He stressed that the films, being made with government finance, should have social relevance, aesthetic beauty, and technical excellence. Stating the need for those directing films to have knowledge about movie making, Gopalakrishnan said he wanted the filmmakers from the marginalised sections to be updated periodically and get proper orientation under experts. 'The women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST category should be continued in the industry…I said for their good… My intention was their upliftment. I never tried to picture them in a poor light and viewed them as derogatory," he said. The 'Swayamvaram' director sought to know from the media what was objectionable in his remarks at the conclave. 'I saw films by some of such filmmakers. I felt that there were issues due to the lack of orientation in their films. I specifically mentioned these two categories of directors, as they are financed by the government," he further said. Besides empowering them and giving them proper guidance, such filmmakers should also be given orientation on how to utilise public funds, he added. He also criticised singer Pushpavati for interrupting his speech during the conclave and said she had no connection with the cinema. When reporters asked about a police complaint lodged against him, Gopalakrishnan said, 'Let them complain. They have all the rights to the same." Earlier in the day, Dalit activist Dinu Veyil lodged a complaint with the Museum police and SC/ST Commission against Gopalakrishnan, accusing him of insulting the entire backward community through his statements in the conclave. While Port Minister V N Vasavan extended support to Gopalakrishnan, saying that his words were misinterpreted, Higher Education Minister R Bindhu rejected the veteran's remarks and said the government has the responsibility to ensure justice to those who have been denied all these years. Gopalakrishnan has not criticised the government's stand, Vasavan said, adding that he just suggested exercising caution while disbursing funds in connection with the funding for filmmakers. Bindhu, however, said there is nothing wrong with the government providing funds for women and those belonging to the SC/ST community for expressing their creativity. Stating that filmmaking is an expensive process and there is nothing wrong with providing funds for the same by the government, the minister also said that it is one of the best projects of the cultural affairs department. Gopalakrishnan on Sunday said the current practice of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) providing Rs 1.5 crore to prospective filmmakers from marginalised sections has not been producing the desired results. He said the aspiring filmmakers belonging to these sessions should first undergo proper training by experts before such funds are disbursed.
