How to wear denim - from jeans to jorts

Don't assume that with summer's arrival, it's time to ditch your denim. The hardy fabric is a
wardrobe essential
all year round, even more so in an unpredictable Irish summer. Making denim summer-appropriate is all about striking a balance of comfort, breathability, and the flexibility to adapt if the temperature decides to rise.
On the 2025 catwalks, the more relaxed, easy-breezy notion of denim continued. Loose, lightweight silhouettes were the go-to choice for jeans at Chloe, Gucci, and Bottega Veneta. One standout trend? Drawstring waists. A new addition to the denim roster for summer, the stretchy-style waistband has given rise to the 'sweatpant jeans' trend. These hybrids combine the comfort of joggers or sweatpants with the classic look of denim. Designers Gabriela Hearst, Dior, and Bottega also offered their versions of comfy denim that could pass for track pants.
If you prefer a more elevated version, the wide-leg style crafted from authentic denim will still offer the same breezy, comforting style with a little more structure and polish. Cuffed denim is another detail that designers and the high street alike have embraced; whether your jeans come pre-rolled or you do a DIY job, this styling hack adds a lighter, more relaxed feel to denim while helping to balance proportions. Cuffed denim puts your shoes in the spotlight – so pair them with ballet flats, sleek trainers or pointed kitten heels for the evening.

On the other end of the denim scale, dressier and tailored styles dominated the catwalk shows of Chanel, Bally, and Stella McCartney. Chanel dusted cuffs with intricate beadwork, while McCartney went all out with shimmering, co-ordinating denim sets that are ideal for making a statement at summer occasions. Answering the call for elevated denim, Bally went refined with pintuck denim that could pass for tailored trousers. Meanwhile, inky dark denim washes made a surprising appearance on the catwalks of Jil Sander, Max Mara, and Schiaparelli, giving denim a more formal edge for summer.

Bringing a more couture sensibility to denim, Irish designer Helen Cody recently launched HC Denim. This new sub-brand offers handcrafted, made-to-measure denim pieces reflecting her decades of expertise in bespoke design. Each piece is crafted from luxury deadstock denim, and the initial capsule collection features tailored jeans, denim dresses, and corset jackets. 'Denim is such a democratic fabric, but we are treating it like couture – everything is hand-cut, tailored, and crafted in-studio,' says Cody.

Another handcrafted offering is Dublin-based Native Denims, a denim atelier that creates bespoke, made-to-measure jeans. They're expanding their denim roster with more womenswear later this year, including barrel-shaped jeans and waistcoats.

If you prefer to keep it on the light spectrum, cream, ecru, and chalky whites were the mainstay denim hues at Chloe and Isabel Marant. These shades are a perennial summer trend, but for 2025, the key to making it look contemporary lies in the cut – try barrel, wide, or straight-leg styles. Styling-wise, go tonal. Mix and match various neutral shades of ivory, cream, and stone for a fresh summer look.
Another summer denim classic is the cut-off short, but for 2025, they've gone grown-up. Enter the jort – the jean short, or bermuda short. Longer in length, typically sitting just above the knee, they are a dressier, tailored version of the casual cut-off. Enhance the tailored style of the shorts by pairing them with a shirting or an oversized blazer. When it comes to footwear, try ballet flats, pointed courts, or slingback kitten heels for added elevation.

Tommy Bowe questions woman's decision to bring child to tennis match

Tommy Bowe has questioned the decision of a parent to bring their child to a tennis match after the child in question disrupted the players by crying. Partway through the match between Emma Raducanu and Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Open, Raducanu complained about the crying child 'for ten minutes' to the chair umpire, who replied in seemingly disbelief by asking whether Raducanu wanted the child to be removed, to which Raducanu and some of the crowd responded in the affirmative. The British tennis star has come in for some criticism from some quarters for her remarks and attitude to the crying child, but she has a supporter in ex-Ireland rugby star Tommy Bowe who also believes the child shouldn't have been brought to the event. Emma Raducanu (Image: ISI Photos via Getty Images) Appearing on Ireland AM, the topic of Raducanu's comments came up, with Bowe being asked what he as a father of two would have done in the situation. Bowe told actor Gerard Jordan, who was appearing on the show, that he wouldn't have brought his children to such an event, and in an imagined scenario where a babysitter fell through at the last minute, the ex-rugby star claimed that in that situation he would have simply stayed at home with the children. "As a parent, I would know that it would be too stressful for me to take my child in there to be put in that situation. So I'd decide, no, I don't think it's worth upsetting the other people who are watching it and me being put under the stress of doing it. I'll watch it on the telly," said Bowe. Tommy Bowe Like Raducanu, Bowe has come in for some criticism for his comments, with one social media user saying "Disappointed in these comments. No compassion for that mom. Gerard Jordan is just trying to inspire people to put themselves in someone else's shoes for two seconds but y'all can't even do that." Others have defended Bowe, and have suggested that in a sporting event like tennis where the crowd remains mostly silent, perhaps a young child isn't suited to such an environment. As for the match itself, Sabalenka won in three sets as she continues to build momentum ahead of next month's US Open, where Raducanu will team with Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles action.

Chloe Burrows hits back after quitting Celeb SAS in 38 hours – saying she got paid in full & ‘just wanted bed and vape'

CHLOE Burrows has defended her decision to quit Celebrity SAS after less than two days on the course. The former Love Islander was one of the 12 recruits taking part on this year's series, which is currently airing on Channel 4. 7 Chloe Burrows opened up about her time on Celeb SAS Credit: YouTube/Chloe Vs The World 7 Chloe withdrew from the course after just two days Credit: Channel4 7 Chloe said her time on the show was "hell" and told others not to do it Credit: Pete Dadds / Channel 4 However, just 38 hours on the show, Chloe dramatically exited the show, telling the DS team that she had "had enough" while walking up a steep hill. Handing in her armband to VW (voluntarily withdraw), Chloe was joined by fellow Islander Tasha Ghouri, who claimed she "wasn't mentally there" to take on the challenge and has refused to acknowledge the show since. Speaking on her podcast, Chloe Vs. The World today, Chloe defended herself from online critics but admitted she was "violently under-prepared" to take on such a gruelling show. "I left. I quit, because guess what, guys, it's f**king hell," she declared. "It's hell, no one ever do it. "I don't even know why I did… well I know why I did it. I've loved that show for years, me and my dad used to watch it going up, and obviously they said, 'Do you want this opportunity? And I was like, Hell's f**king yeah, I will smash it'. "I thought I'd be quite good. I spoke to, I think Pete Wicks, and he was like, 'it's not even that bad'. Pete, you're a liar." Admitting she had worn herself too thin ahead of going to the show – doing an eight-day stint in Ibiza before filming Sidemen's Inside show for Netflix – Chloe revealed she had been clubbing until the early hours of the morning on the day she left to take part on Celeb SAS. On the moment she quit, Chloe said: "I think I said, 'all I need is my bed and a vape', and I that I did need. So that was the end of that. "It was like 30 hours of hell. I don't know how they did it. Honestly, and it's really hard to be in a good mood when you're like, cold, tired, wet, hungry, knowing you're gonna do something awful. "I just didn't have it in me. I was in hell. I wanted to cry, and I've never been happier than when I did the seven hour drive back." Who Dares Wins in chaos as two more stars quit within A MINUTE of each other Despite exiting the show early, Chloe responded to a string of comments about her stint – and smiled as she confirmed she did still get paid her full fee for participating. "Does she still get paid? Yes, I did," she admitted. "At the end of the day, I see all the hate comments, I knew I was gonna get it, but no one can be like, harder on me than myself. "I was devastated. If I was to do it again, I would… I knew I wasn't prepared, I should have pulled out, but then, we didn't know if they were doing another season. "It's a show I've loved and I've wanted to do for years, why would I not take that opportunity? I just wanted to live it. I was just very violently unprepared." 7 After less than two days, Chloe handed in her armband Credit: Channel 4 7 Chloe said that she 'just wanted a vape and her bed' as she quit the show Credit: YouTube/Chloe Vs The World 7 Chloe admits she still got paid the full amount for her time on the show Credit: Pete Dadds / Channel 4

Sharlene Mawdsley and GAA star boyfriend take big step in relationship

Sharlene Mawdsley appears to be primed to take a huge step in her relationship with her boyfriend, Tipperary hurling hero Mikey Breen. Sharlene and Mikey went public with their relationship earlier this summer, with the Olympian spotted at Croke Park cheering defender Breen on during the Premier County's run to the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Taking to social media on Tuesday, Sharlene posted a cryptic message on her Instagram story that appears to suggest that herself and Breen are moving to a new home. Sharing a snap of two keys on a table in a living room on her Instagram story, Mawdsley tagged Breen while captioning the story 'End of the Thurles Era @mikeybreeno.' Mawdsley and Breen confirmed their relationship this summer, and the pair appeared on stage at Tipperary's Semple Stadium homecoming following Tipp's All-Ireland win over Cork. Sprinter Mawdsley was even spotted racing some Tipperary fans after a long night of celebrations following the win, and needless to say the Newport AC star cruised to victory. It has been a difficult year for Mawdsley since starring at the Paris Olympics with Team Ireland. The 27-year-old had to deal with an injury hit start to the year, while she also suffered in her personal life as her father, Thomas, passed away at the beginning of June. The relay specialist returned to the track later in the summer and recently picked up a National 200m title as she pipped Sarah Lavin and Lauren Roy in an epic race at Morton Stadium earlier this month.
