EG lags behind in water cess collection target
Collector Prasanthi conducted a review meeting with field-level revenue officials on Thursday.
During the meeting, she instructed the officials to publish mandal-wise details of Water Users Associations (WUAs) to ensure transparency and better coordination.
She informed that the district has a total cultivable area of 2,80,000 acres, for which water cess amounting to Rs 2,84,51,378 needs to be collected. However, only Rs 2, 00, 11, 361 (42.16%) of the target has been collected so far.
Rajamahendravaram division achieved 40.57% of its target, while the Kovvur division managed 43.75%. The collector said that as per government guidelines, full recovery of the pending taxes must be ensured by the end of January.
She also directed that if there are discrepancies in the extent of cultivated land under ayacut areas, joint field-level verification should be conducted by the Revenue, Irrigation, and Agriculture departments.
She stated that the collection of water cess is being closely monitored at the level of the Special Chief Secretary to the State Government, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.The collector also directed officials to resolve petitions received through the public grievance redressal platform promptly and efficiently, ensuring that citizen concerns are addressed without delay.
Joint collector S Chinna Ramudu, District Revenue Officer T Seetha Ramamurthy, RDOs R Krishna Naik and Rani Sushmita, Housing PD S Bhaskar Reddy, District Survey Officer B Lakshminarayana, Collectorate AO Ali, and Tahsildars from 19 mandals attended the meeting.

Kin cremate caste killing victim's body after 5 days
Tirunelveli: The mortal remains of scheduled caste (SC) youth C Kavin Selva Ganesh were laid to rest at his native place, Arumugamangalam at Eral in Tuticorin district, on Friday as his family agreed to accept the body after protesting for more than five days. The family has been demanding justice for Kavin, who was murdered by his girlfriend's brother Surjith who opposed their relationship as the woman belonged to the most backward community. On Friday morning, Kavin's mortal remains were handed over to his parents and relatives at Tirunelveli govt medical college hospital after post-mortem. Municipal administration minister K N Nehru and Tirunelveli collector R Sukumar paid tributes to the body which was then transported to Arumugamangalam amid police security. A large number of villagers and relatives gathered for the cremation. Tuticorin MP K Kanimozhi, social welfare minister P Geetha Jeevan, fisheries minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan, Tuticorin collector K Elambahavath, and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman consoled the family. Tamil Nadu State Commission for SC/STs chairperson S Tamilvanan handed over a cheque of Rs 6 lakh as compensation to Kavin's family and assured prompt legal action in the case. "We will pressure the state and central govts to enact a separate law for handling caste killings. Caste violence affects the whole society. Any woman above 18 years of age and man above 21 years of age should be free to pick their partner of their choice for marriage," said Tamilvanan, chairing a review meeting in Tirunelveli. He also recommended ensuring protection for Kavin's family. Kavin's murder case was transferred to CBCID on Wednesday. S Surjith, 21, the brother of S Subashini, the woman who was reportedly in a relationship with Kavin, was arrested for the murder and detained under the Goondas Act. Later, their father Saravanan, a police sub-inspector attached to Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP), was also arrested. Their mother, Krishnakumari, who is also an SI attached to TSP, was suspended along with Saravanan but not arrested, though booked in the case. Tirunelveli city police have clarified that there were no previous police complaints against Kavin regarding the love affair and no police officer threatened Kavin or his family members.

26 years after shutting down lotteries, cash-strapped Himachal makes U-turn
KULLU: Cash-strapped Himachal Pradesh is trying its luck with lottery to turn its fortunes. The cabinet has allowed lottery operations, which were shut down in 1999. Burdened with a debt of over Rs 1 lakh crore, it hopes to make a modest Rs 50 crore to Rs 100 crore annually from sale of lottery tickets. The decision to reintroduce lotteries after over a quarter century was taken in a cabinet meeting on July 31. The recommendation came from a cabinet sub-committee set up to give suggestions to boost state revenue. The move seems to be inspired by other states that run lotteries. Neighbouring Punjab earned Rs 235 crore through sale of lottery tickets during the 2024-25 fiscal while the tiny state of Sikkim made Rs 30 crore. Kerala tops the list - the southern state earned a jaw-dropping Rs 13,582 crore last fiscal. Himachal, which is finding it difficult to meet the expenses of rebuilding the damage caused by this year's landslides and flash floods, hopes to mop up some much-needed funds this way. "Many states earn through lotteries. You will be surprised to know how much Kerala earns. MP at the bottom in operational length of Metro network
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh ranks last in the country when it comes to the operational length of Metro networks. The operational length of the Metro in MP is 6.2 km in Indore. Total operational length of the Metro in the country is 1035.74 km. Rajasthan was the second lowest state in operational length of Metro with 12.1 km in Jaipur, compared to double the 6.2 km operational length in MP. The Metro is operational only in Indore in MP. This information was provided in the Rajya Sabha during the ongoing session in response to a question from BJP member from Karnataka, Iranna Kadadi. In his reply in the Rajya Sabha, Union minister of state in the ministry of housing and urban affairs, Tokhan Sahu, informed that the Metro is operational in 11 states of the country, including Delhi & NCR, Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Kerala, UP, Maharashtra, Gujarat and MP. At present, about 1,036 km of metro rail network is operational in 24 cities across the country. In the last five years, including 2025-26, 339 km of Metro network became operational across the country. The Metro issue was also raised in the MP assembly on Thursday. The state govt replied that Nov 2022 was the initial deadline to start the Metro, but now 2028 is the new deadline to complete all corridors of the Metro project. The first phase of Metro has started in Indore this year. Target to start the first phase of the Metro in Bhopal is also in 2025. The govt also revealed that it has received a loan of over Rs 2,100 crore for Bhopal and Indore Metros from different national and international agencies. On Friday, chief minister Mohan Yadav announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon visit Madhya Pradesh. He shared, "It is a matter of great joy that Prime Minister Modi has given his verbal consent to personally attend two major events — the inauguration of the Bhopal Metro train and the foundation-laying ceremony of the PM MITRA Park in Dhar." On July 27, the CM had announced that the govt is swiftly moving towards its goal of presenting Bhopal residents with the gift of Metro train service by Oct 2025. He stated that metro train services have already commenced in Indore and received an excellent response from the public. The Bhopal Metro project is also progressing rapidly, with only a few remaining tasks to be completed within the next one and a half to two months. Yadav informed that the test run of the Bhopal Metro is underway.
