Market Participants Reaffirm S&P 500's Ascent in 2025: 5 Picks
The S&P 500 Index has been able to recoup all losses suffered due to the Trump administration's tariff-led market mayhem at jet speed. Wall Street's most observed stock index recovered all losses since April 2 and is currently is hovering around its all-time high recorded in February.
During the tariff-led April turmoil, at one point, the S&P 500 was down nearly 20% from its all-time high and on the verge of entering the bear market. Nevertheless, year to date, the index is up 4.6%.
At this stage, we recommend five stocks from the S&P 500 Index for near-term investment. These stocks have provided more than 20% returns in the past three months despite facing severe volatility. These stocks carry a favorable Zacks Rank, which indicates that recent momentum in stock prices will continue in the near term.
The stocks are: Amphenol Corp. APH, Jabil Inc. JBL, Newmont Corp. NEM, KLA Corp. KLAC and Lam Research Corp. LRCX. Each of our picks carries either a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.
S&P 500 Regains Investors' Mojo
Since the beginning of 2025, market participants were bullish on the S&P 500's northbound journey after astonishing rallies in 2024 and 2023. More than 20 investment management behemoths raised the year-end target level of Wall Street's most observed stock index.
However, during the tariff and trade-led turmoil in April, 11 major investment banks cut the broad-market index's target level. However, in the second half of June, eight out of those 11 firms again raised their 2025 target level for the S&P 500 Index.
Expectations of a U.S.-China trade deal, a President Trump-dictated ceasefire between Iran and Israel, a reduction in crude oil and U.S. dollar index prices, a gradual decline in the inflation rate and the evaporation of a near-term recession, boosted market participants' confidence in risky assets like equities. Consequently, the S&P 500 Index regained its northward trajectory.
The chart below shows the price performance of our five picks in the past three months.
Amphenol Corp.
Zacks Rank #2 Amphenol provides connectivity solutions using AI and ML (machine learning) technologies. It provides AI-powered high-density, high-speed connectors and cables, and interconnect systems optimized for signal integrity and thermal performance.

Gold prices to grow further against a weak U.S. dollar, diversification of assets: analyst
As the price of gold rallied significantly this year, an analyst predicts the precious metal will grow even further as the U.S. dollar weakens on the global market. John Zechner, chairman of J. Zechner Associates says central banks in China, India and Japan are diversifying assets away from U.S. reserve holdings towards the rich commodity, which will likely contribute to continued price growth. He says countries have been turning away from the commodity because of global trade tensions and geopolitical risks from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs war. 'It has now surpassed the Euro as the second biggest holding, next to the U.S. dollar,' Zechner told BNN Bloomberg in a Thursday interview. 'Given what's going on the U.S., I can only see that going further.' The price of gold floated around US$3,330 due to the de-escalation of the Israel and Iran conflict. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar plummeted to a three-year low as expectations from the Federal Reserve eased amidst speculation that Trump may nominate a new chief who is more likely to cut interest rates , according to Reuters. Lower interest rates tend to depress a currency. Investors have flocked to gold in recent months viewing the commodity as a safe haven, according to a commodity strategist with TD Securities. 'I think these central banks are massive buyers,' said Zechner. 'That will continue. They have to diversify their currency holdings, probably out of fiat currencies in general.'Zechner does, however, say countries might consider adopting cryptocurrencies.' I have yet to see a major central bank, or even a mid-level central bank, start to embrace Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general,' said Zechner. 'In the meantime, they can buy gold. I think they will continue to do it.' Torex Gold Resources (TXG TSX) Zechner favours Torex Gold Resources, a Canadian intermediate gold producer engaged in mining, developing and exploring in Mexico. The company has been extracting the commodity at a 29,000-hectare property. The company's stock is hovering around $42, up 109.8 per cent from last year. He said the company has made strategic moves operating undergrounds mines El Limon and Media Luna extending their reserves and improving their financial position. 'We've held it for a while now,' said Zechner. 'They started to do really well in the past year in the big Morales property in Mexico. They had the largest single mine there, and the El Limon mine. The problem was, it got a low valuation, because they're running out of the existing open pit. It's running down. They're going to have to sort of roll it off. People were not paying much for future growth but on that same property to the south of it, they had a property called Media Luna. They've been able to bring the Media Luna online to replace this almost seamlessly in the past year, right on budget and right on time. It is almost unheard of. At the same time, you've gone underground at a El Limon as well as Media Luna. That's going to extend the reserves a little bit further.' Reyna Silver, an exploration and development company focused on exploring high-grade, district-scale silver deposits in Mexico and the United States recently announced acquisition by Torex Gold and Concurrent Financing.

Is Ford Blue Fueling Model e's Future in the Changing Auto Landscape?
The automotive giant, Ford Motor Company F, is steadfast in its race toward relevance. As the company electrifies its product lineup through the Model e segment, its legacy Ford Blue segment is the cash engine behind it. The traditional internal combustion engine business has iconic models like the F-Series, Ranger, Maverick, Bronco, Explorer and Mustang under its name. In the last reported quarter, total wholesale volume in the Ford Blue segment decreased 6% year over year to 588,000 units but exceeded our expectation of 524,000 units. Ford Blue segment had logged revenues of $21 billion (with an EBIT of $96 million) compared to Ford Pro and Model e's revenues of $15.2 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, in the first quarter of 2025. Model e remained a loss-making segment. As Model e's ambitions require capital-intensive investments, Ford primarily funds those with the profitability from its ICE vehicles. The massive Ford Blue segment continues to generate profits to balance off losses, maintain customer loyalty with legacy models, leverage dealer networks and lead through innovation in hybrid models. This would act as a strong foundation for Model e to build on its EV and software-led business. Ford expects to sell fewer ICE vehicles compared to last year. Additionally, a shift in product mix and foreign exchange headwinds will drag profits. Despite that, it is expected to sufficiently do well as a bridge to EVs' long-term growth strategy. Peer Check: GM & STLA General Motors Company ( GM ), Ford's closest rival, boasts of 17.2% U.S. auto market share. General Motors has lowered its full-year 2025 guidance, owing to an estimated $4-$5 million exposure to the impacts of auto tariffs. However, it is advancing well in its electrification journey. In the final quarter of 2024, General Motors' EV portfolio became 'variable profit positive' with plans to cut EV-related losses further this year. On the other hand, the company continues to invest heavily in expanding ICE production at the U.S. plants. Stellantis N.V. ( STLA ), another multinational automaker, has plans to reassess its capital spending strategies. The company has also brought down its EV production and is bringing its ICE back. Stellantis notices that U.S. markets are still demanding the traditional gas-powered muscle cars. EVs are gaining traction but will be put in the backseat for now. A slower shift to EVs will allow Stellantis to examine its infrastructure challenges. The Zacks Rundown for Ford Shares of Ford have lost around 8.7% over the past year against the industry 's growth of 14.9%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research From a valuation standpoint, F trades at a forward price-to-sales ratio of 0.26, below the industry average. It carries a Value Score of A. Deal with Beijing will speed China's export of minerals to the U.S., treasury secretary says
In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, right, shakes hands with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent before their meeting to discuss China-U.S. trade, in London, Monday, June 9, 2025. (Li Ying/Xinhua via AP) BANGKOK — Washington and Beijing have signed a trade agreement that will make it easier for American firms to obtain magnets and rare earth minerals from China that are critical to manufacturing and microchip production, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Friday. The agreement comes after China retaliated against steep import tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Chinese goods and moved to slow export of rare earth minerals and magnets much-needed by U.S. industrial interests. Bessent said on Fox Business Network's 'Mornings with Maria' that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping 'had a phone call' previously 'and then our teams met in London, ironed this out, and I am confident now that we, as agreed, the magnets will flow.' 'Part of the agreement was tariffs coming down and rare earth magnets starting to flow back to the U.S.,' Bessent said. 'They formed the core of a lot of our industrial base. They were not flowing as fast as previously agreed.' His comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump announcing two weeks earlier an agreement with China that he said would ease exportation of magnets and rare earth minerals That pact cleared the way for the trade talks to continue. The U.S. has previously suspended some sales to China of critical U.S. technologies like components used for jet engines and semiconductors, But it has also agreed to stop trying to revoke visas of Chinese nationals on U.S. college campuses. Bessent added of critical mineral exports, 'What we're seeing here is a de-escalation.' Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Bloomberg TV that the deal was signed earlier this week. China's Commerce Ministry said Friday that the two sides had 'further confirmed the details of the framework,' though its statement did not explicitly mention U.S. access to rare earths that have been at the center of the negotiations. 'China will, in accordance with the law, review and approve eligible export applications for controlled items. In turn, the United States will lift a series of restrictive measures it had imposed on China,' it said. Initial talks in Geneva in early May led both sides to postpone massive tariff hikes that were threatening to freeze much trade between the two countries. Later talks in London set a framework for negotiations and the deal mentioned by Trump appeared to formalize that agreement — setting the stage for Bessent's comments on Friday. China has not announced any new agreements, but it announced earlier this week that it was speeding up approvals of exports of rare earths, materials used in high-tech products such as electric vehicles. Beijing's limits on exports of rare earths have been a key point of contention. The Chinese Commerce Ministry said Thursday that Beijing was accelerating review of export license applications for rare earths and had approved 'a certain number of compliant applications.' China does not remove export control restrictions on rare earths but retains the flexibility to dial up or down the approval process as needed. The rare earth products were added to the control list as spelled out by a Chinese law, which applies to all exports worldwide, not just those bound for the U.S. market Export controls of the minerals apparently eclipsed tariffs in the latest round of trade negotiations between Beijing and Washington after China imposed permitting requirements on seven rare earth elements in April, threatening to disrupt production of cars, robots, wind turbines and other high-tech products in the U.S. and around the world. China also has taken steps recently on the fentanyl issue, announcing last week that it would designate two more substances as precursor chemicals for fentanyl, making them subject to production, transport and export regulations. Trump has demanded that Beijing do more to stop the flow of such precursor ingredients to Mexican drug cartels, which use them to make fentanyl for sale in the U.S. He imposed 20 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports over the fentanyl issue, the biggest part of current 30 per cent across-the-board taxes on Chinese goods. The agreement struck in May in Geneva called for both sides to scale back punitive tariff hikes imposed as Trump escalated his trade war and sharply raised import duties. Some higher tariffs, such as those imposed by Washington related to the trade in fentanyl and duties on aluminum and steel, remain in place. The rapidly shifting policies are taking a toll on both of the world's two largest economies. The U.S. economy contracted at a 0.5 per cent annual pace from January through March, partly because imports surged as companies and households rushed to buy foreign goods before Trump could impose tariffs on them. In China, factory profits sank more than 9 per cent from a year earlier in May, with automakers suffering a large share of that drop. They fell more than 1 per cent year-on-year in January-May. Trump and other U.S. officials have indicated they expect to reach trade deals with many other countries, including India. 'We're going to have deal after deal after deal,' Lutnick said.
