Trump names Stallone and Crawford among Kennedy Centre Honours nominees

Crawford starred in Phantom Of The Opera on Broadway and the West End, and writer Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber was himself a Kennedy Centre Honours recipient in 2006.
Other previous British recipients have included Sir Elton John in 2004 and Dame Julie Andrews in 2001.
Mr Trump said he will 'fully renovate' the entire infrastructure of the Kennedy Centre to make it a 'crown jewel' of arts and culture in the United States.
'We're going to bring it to a higher level than it ever hit,' he said, adding that the venue would be featured in next year's celebrations of America's 250th anniversary.
The Republican president said he did not want to host the programme but was invited to do so and agreed.
Mr Trump avoided the Kennedy Centre Honours awards programme during his first term after artists said they would not attend out of protest.
This year, the president has taken over as the Kennedy Centre's new chairman and sacked the board of trustees, which he replaced with loyalists.
In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Mr Trump teased a name change for the centre, formally the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, and said it would be restored to its past glory.
'GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS,' he wrote.
Mr Trump said work was being done on the site that would be 'bringing it back to the absolute TOP LEVEL of luxury, glamour, and entertainment'.
'It had fallen on hard times, physically, BUT WILL SOON BE MAKING A MAJOR COMEBACK!!!' he wrote.
In a statement on its social media feed, the Kennedy Centre said it is 'honoured' to host Mr Trump, who will be visiting for the third time since January, and hinted that he would announce a construction project.
'Thanks to his advocacy, our beautiful building will undergo renovations to restore its prestige and grandeur,' the venue said.
'We are also excited to be announcing this year's INCREDIBLE slate of Kennedy Center Honorees.'
Mr Trump complained during a March visit that the building is in a state of 'tremendous disrepair'.
The president, who had indicated he wanted a more active role in the selection process, said he was 'about 98% involved' in choosing the honorees.
He said he 'turned down plenty' of names, saying those individuals were 'too woke', or too liberal.
Mr Trump described the slate of artists he announced on Wednesday, which include several of his personal favourites, as 'great people'.
Historically, a bipartisan advisory committee selects the recipients, who over the years have ranged from George Balanchine and Tom Hanks to Aretha Franklin and Stephen Sondheim.
In the past, Mr Trump has floated the idea of granting Kennedy Centre Honours status to singer-songwriter Paul Anka and Stallone, one of three actors Mr Trump named as Hollywood ambassadors earlier this year.
Anka was supposed to perform My Way at Mr Trump's first inaugural and backed out at the last moment.
The Kennedy Centre Honours were established in 1978 and have been given to a broad range of artists.
Until Mr Trump's first term, presidents of both major political parties traditionally attended the annual ceremony, even when they disagreed politically with a given recipient.
Prominent liberals such as Barbra Streisand and Warren Beatty were honoured during the administration of Republican George W Bush, and a leading conservative, Charlton Heston, was feted during the administration of Democrat Bill Clinton.
In 2017, after honoree Norman Lear declared that he would not attend a White House celebration in protest over Mr Trump's proposed cuts to federal arts funding, Mr Trump and first lady Melania Trump decided to skip the Kennedy Centre event and stayed away throughout his first term.
Honorees during that time included such Trump critics as Cher, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sally Field.
Since taking office for a second time, Mr Trump has taken a much more forceful stance on the Kennedy Centre and inserted himself into its governance.
Besides naming himself chairman and remaking the board, he has also indicated he would take over decisions regarding programming at the centre and vowed to end events featuring performers in drag.
The steps have drawn further criticism from some artists.
In March, the producers of Hamilton pulled out of staging the Broadway hit musical in 2026, citing Mr Trump's aggressive takeover of the institution's leadership.
Other artists who cancelled events include actor Issa Rae, singer Rhiannon Giddens and author Louise Penny.
House Republicans added an amendment to a spending Bill that Mr Trump signed into law in July to rename the Kennedy Centre's Opera House after Melania Trump, but that venue has yet to be renamed.
Maria Shriver, a niece of the late President Kennedy, a Democrat, has criticised as 'insane' a separate House proposal to rename the entire centre after Mr Trump.
Recipients of the Kennedy Centre Honours are given a medallion on a rainbow ribbon, a nod to the range of skills that fall under the performing arts.
In April, the centre changed the lights on the exterior from the long-standing rainbow to a permanent red, white and blue display.

Seth Meyers on Trump's Kennedy Center fixation: ‘This is what the right really cares about'

With most late-night hosts on holiday, Seth Meyers looked into Donald Trump's fixation with the Kennedy Center after he said he picked honorees to prevent 'woke' winners. 'You might be wondering why you haven't heard much about important issues like inflation, healthcare or infrastructure lately,' said Seth Meyers on Thursday's Late Night, 'but there's a very good reason: Donald Trump doesn't care. He pretended to care during the campaign, the same way you pretend to love apple picking when you're dating someone. 'Trump and Maga don't actually care if people can afford healthcare or groceries,' he continued. But they do care about the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which Trump took over early in his term, firing the board and installing himself as chair. Earlier this week, Trump announced plans to personally host its annual award show, the Kennedy Center Honors, in December. Trump also said he was about '98% involved' in selecting the honorees. 'I turned down plenty,' he said. 'I had a couple of wokesters.' 'I'm sorry, did he say 'wokesters'?' said Meyers. 'A wokester sounds like a car your great-grandfather drove after the war. 'Shout out to the free speech warriors going radio silent while the president just fully admits he's punishing artists for their politics,' he added. 'You keep doing you, but only when it fits your worldview, you fucking hypocrites. 'But Trump says these things with impunity, because this is what really animates the Maga movement,' he continued. 'They don't care about policy or improving people's lives. They want to go on Fox News and whine about woke.' Meyers played a series clips of numerous Republicans fuming about so-called cancellations of characters from Mr Potato Head to Pepe Le Pew. 'You can't freak out every time a few people online complain about something,' said Meyers. 'That doesn't represent the left. That's just social media. The same thing happened with the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad: no one in a real position of power on the left or in the Democratic party said a word about it, but then the most annoying voices on the right spent weeks fanning a so-called backlash to the backlash to mine clicks, until it got all the way to the president, who felt the need to talk about it in between flag humps. 'This is what the right really cares about. This is why Trump is spending his precious time announcing the Kennedy Center Honors and complaining about how he never personally was offered that award.' As Trump put it: 'I would've taken it, if they called me … I waited and waited and waited.' 'You were waiting by the phone for a Kennedy Center award? What did you think you were going to get it for?' Meyers laughed. 'I mean, I know he thought he should've won an Emmy for The Apprentice, but the Kennedy Center honor is for performing artists who have contributed a lifetime to the culture. Did you put out an album that we don't know about? Were you in a band called Trumpawampa? You haven't done anything for the arts, and you still sat by the phone thinking 'I think this might be my year?' 'But this is what they want,' he concluded. 'They complain about participation trophies, and then demand trophies for not even participating in anything.'

Certain ones don't count. "If you've had a trial, you don't have to carry on after the trial. A few have been trials, a few have been other situations. "I just try and take the high road. Cancel your weekend plans to binge Sheridan Smith's 'outstanding' Netflix drama

It looks like Netflix subscribers are discovering a Sheridan Smith crime drama that first aired on ITV in 2012. Mrs Biggs is climbing up the streamer's ranking of the platform's top 10 TV shows – making a convincing argument for a mid-August weekend watch. Smith – who has so many British dramas to her name it can be easy to let one slip – stars in this five-part drama, which is based on the true story of the Great Train Robbery. The drama focuses on the relationship between Charmian, played by Smith, and Ronnie Biggs, played by Daniel Mays. It follows everything from their first lovestruck meeting and the fateful 1963 train heist, to its aftermath and their eventual divorce in 1976, after Biggs fathered a child in Brazil. We see the petty crook meet his soon-to-be wife on, of all places, a train. 'The future is full of possibilities,' he tells her. 'The past will only drag you down.' With that, the Biggs couple set off on a crime spree before they eventually decide to settle down for a quiet married life. That is, until the 'one last job' pops up in the chance to join the train robbers. Biggs's former wife Charmian was also a consultant on the show. The show's writer and executive producer Jeff Pope said he wanted to set out a romantic tale, rather than a romanticised one. 'We show Ron as perhaps a little too wilfully optimistic and Charmian is the cold voice of reason throughout. It absolutely would be a danger of a piece like this to romanticise it,' he told The Guardian. 'It will get laughed out of court if it's a slushfest. In the first episode, they steal, he strikes her, we acknowledge the fact he had a criminal record; further down the line, Charmian has an abortion by another man. We don't pull back, we don't flinch.' Praised at the time of its release for the quality of the acting and the excitement of the episodes, TV viewers have shared their positive reception over the years, as Mrs Biggs has been available on ITVX as well as Netflix. Taking to X, @AshWoody90 praised: 'Mrs Biggs on Netflix, possibly one the best things I have ever watched.' More Trending @elliot_gonzalez commended the creative partnership between the show's writer and star, writing: 'Jeff Pope and Sheridan Smith should always work together. Mrs Biggs, The Widower, Cilla and now The Moorside. All outstanding work.' @TVChatty wrote: 'All week I've been watching Mrs Biggs on ITV3. Why did I not watch it first time? Fantastic story and great acting. Really enjoyed it.' @lizcurran echoed: 'Sheridan Smith is wonderful in Mrs Biggs – she is one of my favourite actors. Utterly mesmerising – always.'
