Mercedes driver admits killing young woman in 140mph Christmas Day crash

Evan Forde, 32, of Bedford, was behind the wheel of a black Mercedes car when he crashed into the back of a BMW early on December 25 2022.
Brazilian Maria Carolina Do Nascimento, who was a passenger in the BMW, died at the scene in Brent Cross, north London.
The accident happened on a 40mph stretch of Hendon Way at around 3.45am after Forde had reached speeds of more than 140mph.
Shortly beforehand, police officers on patrol in a marked vehicle had indicated for Forde's car to stop.
However, the vehicle drove off from police and there was no pursuit, Scotland Yard had said.
A short time later police were informed the same car had been involved in a collision with another car.
The occupants of the Mercedes did not stop for police and fled the scene on foot, police had said.
London Ambulance Service attended but Ms Nascimento died at the scene.
On Tuesday, Forde appeared at the Old Bailey and pleaded guilty to causing Ms Nascimento's death by dangerous driving.
Members of the victim's family wept in court after he admitted the offence.
Defence barrister Tasmin Malcolm said Forde had 'always accepted' he was driving the Mercedes.
She said: 'Undoubtedly the speed Mr Forde was driving will be an aggravating feature to the court.
'It is important we are satisfied of the accuracy of the material relied on by the Crown.'
Prosecutor Frederick Hookway observed that small variations of the speeds involved in the case were unlikely to have an impact given the defendant had reached 'top speeds of over 140mph'.
Judge Anthony Leonard KC adjourned sentencing until October 22 and granted Forde continued conditional bail.
He told him: 'You have pleaded guilty to a very serious charge. There was perhaps no option other than to do so given the state of the evidence.
'However, the fact you pleaded at this stage will be taken into account at sentencing.
'You must understand the most likely result – if not the inevitable result – will be you sent to prison.'
Previously the Metropolitan Police said it had made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as is routine in such circumstances.

Ex-president Bolsonaro planned to seek asylum in Argentina, police say

Bolsonaro is currently awaiting a Supreme Court ruling about an alleged coup attempt and learned on Wednesday he might face another case as police formally accused him and one of his sons, Eduardo Bolsonaro, of obstruction of justice in connection with his trial. The 170-page report said Bolsonaro had drafted a request for political asylum from Argentine President Javier Milei's government dated February 10 2024. He saved the document two days after authorities searched his home and office as part of the alleged coup plot investigation. Close to that date, Bolsonaro admittedly spent two nights at the Hungarian Embassy in Brasilia, fuelling speculation he may have been attempting to avoid arrest. The Argentina plot is part of the wider police accusation of obstruction of justice, in which Bolsonaro has allegedly ignored precautionary measures established for his house arrest and spread content to his allies 'to directly hit Brazilian democratic institutions, notably the Supreme Court and even Brazil's Congress,' according to the report. The Associated Press reviewed the police evidence, which included messaging app exchanges and voice messages, after police forwarded the documents to Brazil's Supreme Court. Bolsonaro would face another trial if the attorney-general decides to charge him. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the case, gave Bolsonaro's lawyers 48 hours to explain why the former president sought political asylum in Argentina and failed to comply with other precautionary measures of his house arrest, such as avoiding contact with people outside his family circle. In a 33-page letter addressed to Mr Milei, Bolsonaro claimed he was being politically persecuted in Brazil. Both are staunch supporters of US President Donald Trump, who has recently repeated some of the former president's claims in his decision to impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian exports. Brazil's federal police gathered several messages between Bolsonaro and his son in which they show interest in praising Trump to affect legal proceedings back home. 'You won't have time to reverse the situation if the guy here turns his back on you. Everything here is very touchy, every little thing affects you,' Eduardo Bolsonaro told his father in one of the exchanges. Eduardo Bolsonaro also said he had secured U.S. government support 'with great difficulty,' claiming that he and an ally, Paulo Figueiredo, were the only ones with access to the White House. He also told his father that Trump's pressure was the only chance Bolsonaro had to avoid prison. A verdict and sentence in the coup trial will come from a supreme court panel of five justices. They are scheduled to announce their rulings between September 2 and 12. The new findings will not be part of that decision.

Shoreham Airshow disaster: Son's heartbreaking 5 words after dad died in fireball

Tanya Hewstone, 30, wants a new investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 2015 Shoreham Airshow disaster in which a vintage Hawker Hunter jet ploughed into the A27 and killed 11 men The ex-partner of a man killed in the Shoreham Airshow disaster is demanding a criminal probe into the tragedy which claimed 11 lives is re-opened. ‌ Tanya Hewstone, 30, is set to launch a new petition calling for a fresh investigation into the actions of pilot Andy Hill who was severely injured in the crash and cleared of manslaughter following a trial in 2019. Mr Hill was at the controls of a Hawker Hunter T7 jet which crashed on the A27 close to the boundary of Shoreham airport in West Sussex on August 22, 2015. ‌ Tanya's ex-partner, Daniele Polito, 23, who is the father of their son Georgio, 13, was among those killed as he was driving along the A27. Ten years on, she says her son has been excluded from multiple schools because of anger issues. ‌ Hill has also reapplied for his pilot's licence twice - which Tanya says shows a "lack of remorse" - with the latest application refused in May 2025 by the High Court. Tanya, a full-time mum from West Sussex, said: "Georgio has a lot of trauma. His words were, 'My dad died for nothing'. For a child to say that it was really hard. "I think it's hard for anyone to be a single parent to be a completely alone parent - because Georgio's a boy, I don't know how to answer the questions he has sometimes as he grows up. I feel like I've taken the full force of him losing his dad. The last 10 years have been really hard." Daniele was travelling in a BMW with his work colleague, Matt Jones, when their car was hit by the plane. Tanya and Daniele were formerly engaged but hadn't been together in the three months leading up to the crash. Tanya didn't tell Georgio for more than two weeks about his dad's death as she didn't know how to. She added: "I was feeding the ducks with him when it happened, but I didn't find out Daniele had died until the following morning. When I told him I said, 'Daddy had been involved in an accident and he had to go up to the sky'. I had his grandma with me at the time and Georgio said he was going to get his dad from the sky. A year after the accident he was on a plane on holiday, and he said he didn't see his dad." ‌ In December 2022, a coroner ruled that the victims were unlawfully killed and described Hill's flying as "exceptionally bad". The recent Air India crash which left 270 people dead - including a number of people on the ground - has "triggered" Tanya and she is determined to get the case reopened. She said: "There should be justice for all the families. He applied for his pilot's license twice since and that shows no remorse - they've both been rejected." Tomorrow, on the 10-year anniversary, Tanya and Georgio will be paying their respects to Daniele in their own way. She said: "It doesn't feel like it's been 10 years at all, but we're going to go down to the bridge where the memorial is and pay our respects there. It's weird to think it's been 10 years and no justice, no closure - I can't believe it happened. Any future has been taken away, where would we be now?"
