The world got a taste of an effective U.S.-China trade embargo, and after a breakthrough on Monday with lowered tariffs, there's no going back. China now has the "mutual respect" it has long craved from the U.S.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC's Joe Kernen that "there is a sense of mutual respect" during the talks, a point that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also emphasized in his remarks to the press on Monday.
That's in stark contrast to how the first high-level bilateral meeting under the Biden administration kicked off with an exchange of insults in Alaska, followed by a "balloon incident" that delayed then-U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's first visit to China for months.
What's also rare is that on Monday, the U.S. and China released a joint statement — something both sides haven't done since November 2023 with the "Sunnylands" statement on climate cooperation.
Looking ahead, it will be critical to see whether joint statements will be issued after major meetings, or revert to separate readouts, a senior advisor to world governments and business leaders, who has regular dialogue with top officials from both countries, told CNBC. The source requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the conversations.
The source expects volatility is likely around tariffs — an important point of flexibility for Trump as a tool for managing relations with major powers. The source added that a possible resolution could involve large Chinese purchases from the U.S., investments in the U.S. that create jobs, while Beijing gets concessions core to its interests.
While the elevated tariffs didn't last long, the trauma is real. Businesses now know they need to mitigate tariff uncertainty.
"The post-WWII trade framework that once underpinned stable expectations is gone; even further tariff rollbacks won't restore it," Jianwei Xu, senior economist at Natixis, said in a LinkedIn post Monday.
Xu added that large businesses will continue supply chain diversification, but small businesses may stop production — as overall confidence fades in the U.S. dollar as the world's ultimate reserve currency.
In a better-than-expected outcome, the U.S. and China agreed Monday to cut back on most new tariffs on each other's goods for 90 days while the two sides negotiate economic and trade policy.
That's after China, the second-largest supplier of U.S. goods last year, was the only country across the 180 nations and territories hit by "reciprocal" U.S. tariffs to retaliate.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index has recovered to levels seen just before the early April escalation in trade tensions, while the S&P 500 clawed back into positive territory for the year.
"It might be just the beginning of the inevitable collision of the two largest economies," Ting Lu, chief China economist at Nomura, said in a note Monday, adding that "the U.S. is still on the offensive, but China might learn much better on how to dig itself in for the future attack."
Within half an hour of releasing the Chinese-language version of the joint U.S. trade agreement on Monday, China's Commerce Ministry announced that several ministries and provinces held a meeting that day for strengthening export controls on critical minerals, another area in which China dominates the supply chain.
The State Council, China's top executive body, on Monday also published a whitepaper on national security that began by citing the Opium War, which marked the start of a traumatic period known as the "century of humiliation" in China, seared into its national consciousness. The whitepaper had similar narratives, calling for self-reliance and playing up the country's role as a stabilizing force amid global uncertainty.
However, China's growing emphasis on national security tends to come at a cost for some foreign entities, according to business associations.
"A 90-day suspension, while welcome, still creates significant uncertainty for U.S. companies' business planning and costs, undermining their long-term global competitiveness," the U.S.-China Business Council said in a statement Monday, urging China to "end unfair trade practices and market-entry barriers."
But Beijing continued to make thinly veiled swipes at the U.S. on Tuesday at a conference with Latin American and Caribbean leaders on Tuesday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said that "bullying and coercion only lead to isolation," without naming any country in particular, to an audience that included the presidents of Colombia, Brazil and Chile.
Even as China's exports to the U.S. plunged by more than 20% in April, trade data show that China ramped up its exports to Southeast Asia, the European Union and Latin America.
"Despite the temporary tariff‑war reprieve, China continues to signal that it is looking to diversify away from U.S. agricultural goods," Dennis Voznesenski, agricultural economist at CBA, said in a note Tuesday.
He cautioned that seasonality and weather in South America would impact China's ability to reduce its U.S. purchases.
But he pointed to reports that China, on May 9, signed a letter of intent with exporters in Argentina to buy about $900 million in soybeans, corn and vegetable oil, while China has resumed soybean imports from five Brazilian firms.
China's imports from Argentina grew by 6.4% last year to $7.03 billion, according to official data accessed through financial data provider Wind Information.
Established trade routes can't easily be unwound overnight, and Peking University professor Justin Yifu Lin told reporters last month he didn't expect full decoupling between the U.S. and China — largely because of U.S. reliance on Chinese goods.
U.S. products headed to China also saw tariff exemptions "being pretty liberally, leniently enforced," Jacob Cooke, co-founder and CEO of WPIC Marketing + Technologies, told CNBC on Tuesday. The company helps foreign brands — such as Vitamix and IS Clinical — sell online in China and other parts of Asia.
He said that, as was the case during the first Trump administration, most products being shipped to China ended up being exempted from tariffs, largely since the products had a large share of China-made components.
Looking ahead, he expects that tariffs are going to be cut, and that "the largest trading relationship in the world is going to continue."
But for many companies that once solely relied on China-based suppliers, the sudden surge in U.S. tariffs last month is just the latest reason to broaden out.
"Smarter importers have realized that long-term, they are most secure when they are diversified, and hence will continue looking for alternative sources," said Ash Monga, founder and CEO of Guangzhou-based Imex Sourcing Services, a supply chain management company. He launched a website last month called "Tariff Help" for small businesses to find ways to diversify from China-based suppliers.Treasury Sec. The U.S. and China are talking. Bessent and Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo'an met in Washington, D.C., on the sidelines of an international meeting there late last month, the Financial Times reported, citing sources. After the two countries met in Switzerland over the weekend and reached a deal, investment banks have started revising up their China growth forecasts.
China's property sector nears stabilization. That's according to an S&P report Sunday that predicts primary home sales volume is set to moderate its decline to a 2% drop this year, versus a 17% plunge last year.

Mainland China's CSI 300 was up 1.15% while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index — which includes major Chinese companies — rose 1.73% as of 2 p.m. local time.
The benchmark 10-year Chinese government bond yield is at 1.672%.
The offshore Chinese yuan weakened 0.22% against the greenback to 7.2114.

U.S. stocks opened higher, with the broad S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq quickly scoring fresh all-time highs, on a final trade agreement with China and hopes for more with other countries to come. President Donald Trump said a deal had been signed with China, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the U.S. was nearing agreements with ten other trading partners. The final China deal includes a commitment from China to deliver rare earths used in everything from wind turbines to jet planes, Lutnick told Bloomberg. It also includes easier tech restrictions, said China's Ministry of Commerce. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said in an interview on Fox Business he expected trade deals with 18 key trading partners to be wrapped up by Labor Day in September, suggesting Trump's early July deadline would be extended. At 9:38 a.m. ET, the blue-chip Dow added 0.45%, or 193.88 points, to 43,580.72, while the S&P 500 gained 0.29%, or 17.93 points, to 6,158.95 and the Nasdaq rose 0.34%, or 67.63 points, to 20,235.55. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq had been within striking distance of their record highs for the past couple of days but hadn't mustered enough energy to hurdle them until now. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield edged up to 4.285%. Before the opening bell, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, or personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, rose 2.3% annually, as expected. The so-called core rate excluding food and energy, rose 2.7%, slightly higher than the 2.6% mean forecast. The "inflation report shouldn't be enough to give markets a significant scare, but it probably dashes the slim hopes investors had for a July rate cut," said Bret Kenwell, U.S. investment analyst at trading platform eToro. Meanwhile PCE, a measure of consumer spending, fell 0.3% in May from the prior month after adjusting for inflation, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. That was the first decline this year. "This weakness is probably primarily just payback from the jump in spending earlier this year as consumers tried to buy goods ahead of the tariffs," said Greg Wilensky, head of U.S. fixed income and portfolio manager at Janus Henderson. "The weakness in spending was on the goods side while spending on services increased." Nike's quarterly results topped analysts' expectations but the company warned tariffs are expected to increase its costs by $1 billion this fiscal year. It said it will pass some costs on to consumers and cut costs to deal with the added expense. Shares of the mega sportswear company jumped 15.65%. CorMedix plans to sell $85 million of stock in a public offering. Shares slumped 14.51%. Bakkt Holdings filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell up to $1 billion in securities to potentially buy bitcoin and other digital assets. Xiaomi says it received over 200,000 orders for a new car it priced just below Tesla's Model Y in 3 minutes

Xiaomi said it sold more than 200,000 YU7 cars within three minutes of its Beijing launch. The YU7, priced at $35,000, aims to compete with Tesla's Model Y in China. Xiaomi's stock rose as much as 8% in Hong Kong on Friday. Xiaomi launched a car just slightly cheaper than Tesla's Model Y, and it has already attracted hundreds of thousands of buyers. In a Weibo post on Thursday, the Chinese smartphone and electric vehicle maker said it received over 200,000 orders for the YU7 within three minutes of its launch in Beijing. Within an hour of the sale starting, it had more than 289,000 orders for the car, Xiaomi wrote in a second post. The car, which starts at $35,000, is a competitor for the Model Y, China's most popular SUV, which starts at $36,760. Xiaomi's founder and CEO, Lei Jun, repeatedly took jabs at Tesla during the launch event. "Tesla previously said, 'Go ahead and compare,' and we at Xiaomi just won't accept defeat. Today we officially take up Tesla's invite to compare," Lei said on Thursday. Tesla and CEO Elon Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Xiaomi's stock rose 8% to a record high on Friday in Hong Kong following strong order demand. It ended the day up about 3.6% at almost 59 Hong Kong dollars. "YU7 seems to be selling like hot cakes despite slightly higher pricing" than estimated, Jefferies analysts led by Edison Lee wrote in a note on Thursday. "YU7's pricing is slightly below that of Tesla Model Y, but it offers much better specs/performance," the analysts wrote. "Model Y is the main target of YU7, and thus we expect YU7 would be able to take market share from Model Y." Chinese players, including Xiaomi, BYD, the world's largest EV company by sales volume, Nio, and Xpeng, have been undercutting Tesla's prices and gaining market share in China and Europe. The YU7 unveiling adds to the growing EV price war — and Tesla's headaches in the Chinese market. The YU7 is Xiaomi's second car since the company entered the EV sector last year with its SU7 sedan. It is priced below Tesla's Model 3 and has sold more cars than Tesla's Model 3 in China every month since December. It's also attracting some big-name fans in the US. In October, Ford's CEO Jim Farley said he didn't want to give up the Xiaomi SU7 he had been driving for the past half year. Xiaomi's stock is up 72% this year on the back of strong SU7 sales, continued success in the smartphone market, and the addition of home appliances to its product offering. Per BloombergNEF, global electric vehicle (EV) sales are expected to hit nearly 22 million this year, a sharp 25% jump from last year. One in every four cars sold this year will be either fully electric or a plug-in hybrid. And a big part of this boom is happening in China, which is expected to account for nearly two-thirds of all EV sales. Europe and the United States are also playing catch-up, with a growing number of affordable models being rolled out and battery prices continuing to fall. Not too long ago, when people talked about EVs, Tesla TSLA was the only name that came to mind. It was the clear leader, making EVs cool, functional and mainstream. But the landscape is changing fast. Legacy automakers like General Motors GM are now pushing hard into the EV space. Startups like Lucid Group LCID are attracting attention with fresh designs and new tech. And Chinese companies like BYD Co Ltd BYDDY are charging ahead with big product lineups and global ambitions. Climate concerns, stricter emission standards and big improvements in battery range and charging speeds are making EVs more practical—and more popular. Financially, Luminar has also taken steps to strengthen its position. Last month, it repurchased $50 million of its 2026 convertible notes and secured a $200 million credit facility, giving it roughly $400 million in liquidity and extending its financial runway through at least 2026. With strong partnerships, a next-gen product on the horizon and improved financial stability, Luminar is shaping up as a serious contender in the AV tech space. Li Auto is carving out a unique space in China's electric vehicle market by doing things a little differently. While most EV makers jumped straight into fully electric models, Li Auto gained traction with its extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs)—a smart blend of battery power and fuel-based backup. This hybrid setup gave drivers the benefits of an EV, without the range anxiety. And it worked. Each of its L-series models—L6, L7, L8, and L9—has sold over 200,000 units, proving strong demand. Now, Li Auto is going full throttle into pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs). It launched its first BEV, the MEGA, last year and has several more lined up, including Li i8 in July and i6 in September. With this, the company is clearly expanding its reach and aiming for a larger slice of China's fast-growing EV market. Growth is happening on all fronts. By the end of 2024, Li Auto had over 500 retail stores and nearly 500 service centers across China. It has built more than 2,200 supercharging stations, with a bold goal of hitting 4,000 by the end of 2025. International expansion is underway too, with new service centers in places like Dubai and Uzbekistan, and an R&D center in Munich. Li Auto is also stepping up in autonomous driving. Its Li AD Max and Pro systems are already handling highway and city navigation, powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge chips. It's even training artificial intelligence models on 10 million video clips—more than any other Chinese automaker— which puts it ahead in the race of self-driving tech. Looking ahead, Li Auto has big ambitions. It plans to become a leading AI and robotics company by 2030, with potential plans to build humanoid robots once it nails level-4 autonomous driving. LI currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Rivian first made waves with its high-end R1T pickup and R1S SUV, targeting adventure-loving drivers willing to pay a premium. But now, Rivian is preparing to reach a much larger audience with its upcoming R2 — a more affordable electric SUV priced around $45,000. Launching in 2026, the R2 represents a major step forward for the company. The R2 will be built on a next-generation platform designed to lower Rivian's fixed costs, improve manufacturing speed, and boost margins. In the first quarter of 2025, Rivian posted a positive gross margin for the second time, an important milestone that unlocked a $1 billion investment from Volkswagen under their newly formed joint venture. Volkswagen's commitment to Rivian could be a game-changer. The German auto giant plans to invest up to $5.8 billion by 2027. The partnership focuses on co-developing Rivian's next-gen software and electrical architecture, starting with the R2. This collaboration will help speed up development while giving Rivian the scale and support needed to compete with bigger players. Rivian's strategic focus on technology is also paying off. Rivian has rolled out hands-free, eyes-on highway driving in its latest vehicles, marking the beginning of its autonomy push. It aims to move toward full hands-free, eyes-off driving and urban autonomy, enhancing its product appeal. Operationally, Rivian is also tightening the bolts. Engineering improvements, supply chain fixes, and lower input costs are helping the company reduce losses, a promising sign as it works toward profitability. Rivian is expanding its Illinois facility and building a dedicated 1.2 million square foot Supplier Park nearby, which will help reduce production costs further. The company is also preparing to break ground on its Georgia plant in 2026 and expects to add 400,000 units of annual capacity for R2 and R3 models. With a lower-cost model on the way, a deep-pocketed partner in Volkswagen, and steady operational gains, Rivian is positioning itself as a promising player in the EV race.
