
Indian auto industry remains steady in May 2025 with muted PV, marginal sales growth in 2Ws: SIAM
The Indian automobile industry reported a steady but subdued performance in May 2025, with negligible change in the passenger vehicle segment, a slight decline in three-wheelers sales, and marginal growth in two-wheelers, according to
SIAM data
released on Monday.
The passenger vehicle segment recorded a slight year-on-year decline of 0.8 per cent, with 3,44,656 units sold in May 2025 compared to 3,47,492 units in the same month last year.
In contrast, two-wheeler sales rose marginally by 2.2 per cent, with 16,55,927 units sold last month as compared to 16,20,084 units in May 2024.
Under the two-wheeler segment, scooter sales grew significantly by 7.1 per cent, reaching 5,79,507 units, while motorcycle sales remained flat at 10,39,156 units. On the other hand, moped sales declined by 7.7 per cent, totaling 37,264 units in May 2025.
On the auto industry performance, Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, said: 'All vehicle segments posted stable performance in May 2025. The passenger vehicle segment reported sales of 3.45 lakh units— the second-highest ever for May—though it declined marginally by 0.8 per cent compared to May 2024. The three-wheeler segment declined by 3.3per cent year-on-year, with sales of 0.54 lakh units, while the two-wheeler segment grew by 2.2per cent, with sales reaching 16.56 lakh units.'
Quadricycle reported 96.9 per cent decline with a single unit sold in May 2025.
The three-wheeler segment declined by 3.3 per cent, with 53,942 units sold in May 2025. Passenger carriers fell by 2.4 per cent to 44,354 units, while goods carriers dropped 1.6 per cent to 8,720 units

Overall OutlookThe total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles in May 2025 stood at 25,82,207 units.
Looking ahead, the industry is optimistic about improved sales in the coming months. Commenting on this, Menon noted, 'Going forward, the RBI's three repo rate cuts—totaling 100 basis points over the past six months—along with a forecast of above-normal monsoons, are indicators that should positively impact the auto sector by improving affordability and boosting consumer sentiment.'
