Lille's thrilling 6-1 win against Feyenoord secures an unlikely place in Champions League last 16

When Lille lost its opening Champions League match in September, only a few bold gamblers would have bet on the Ligue 1 side to qualify for the last 16 of European club soccer's elite tournament.
But the northern France side defied all the odds and concluded the league phase campaign of the competition with a 6-1 thrashing of Feyenoord on Wednesday.
It was the first time Lille scored more than three goals in the Champions League.
The win saw Lille finish seventh in the standings. With five wins from eight matches, Lille was the standout French club — Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco and Brest will have to go through playoffs.
Lille pulled away with four second-half goals after Osame Sahraoui opened the scoring in the fourth minute.
'We couldn't have wished for anything better,' Lille coach Bruno Genesio said. 'The main objective was to win. We finished this group phase in the best possible way, finishing seventh, and that's a great source of pride for my players, my staff and all the hard work we've put in.'

Michael Jordan, wife enjoy lavish Italy getaway aboard $115 million yacht after NBA on NBC shocker

Michael Jordan is officially in vacation mode. The NBA icon and future NBC Sports contributor recently landed in Sardinia, Italy, for a lavish European getaway with loved ones, including wife Yvette Prieto and their 11-year-old twin daughters, Victoria and Ysabel, as seen in photos obtained Tuesday by The Post. Jordan, 62, exited the aircraft in a faded red T-shirt and floral print shorts while Prieto, his wife of 12 years, opted for a white tank top and black sweatpants. Advertisement Jordan, who typically vacations in Europe over the summer, shocked the sports media landscape last month when it was revealed he's joining NBC as a special contributor for the network's NBA coverage in the upcoming 2025-26 season. 'The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I'm excited about being a special contributor to the project. I'm looking forward to seeing you all when the NBA on NBC launches this October,' he said in a statement at the time. 7 Michael Jordan enjoys a cigar aboard his $115 million yacht. USMNT vs. Switzerland: Lineups, live updates, how to watch Tuesday friendly Show Caption Hide Caption Weston McKennie discusses the state of the USMNT ahead of World Cup Soccer standout Weston McKennie discusses the state of the USMNT and how Mauricio Pochettino is getting the squad ready ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Sports Seriously The U.S. men's national team finishes its Gold Cup preparations with a Tuesday friendly against Switzerland at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tenn. The USMNT will be hoping to take a step forward after a merely adequate performance on Saturday ended with a 2-1 loss to Turkey. While the U.S. controlled much of the game in possession, poor work on the ball inside its own penalty area gifted the Turks both goals, throwing away a first-minute strike from Jack McGlynn that gave the hosts a lead. The USMNT news cycle moved rapidly between matches, providing a mixed bag for the team. In bad news, midfield linchpin Tyler Adams was ruled out with a foot injury, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino saying he hopes the knock will not rule the Bournemouth man out for the Gold Cup. On the plus side, goalkeeper Matt Turner — who will start as part of a heavily rotated 11 for this friendly — has been linked to a €8 million move from Nottingham Forest to French side Lyon. Follow along with Pro Soccer Wire for live updates, highlights, lineups, and analysis for Tuesday's game between the USMNT and Switzerland. The USMNT is without Tyler Adams, a player whose skill set and personality are both arguably indispensable for a team that has, for lack of a better way to put it, lacked a little bit of dawg out there. The Bournemouth midfielder is out with what Mauricio Pochettino called "a small issue in his foot" in a Monday press conference. For more on Adams' status, read Pro Soccer Wire's reporting on the news. The USMNT, in its new "Heartbeat" kits for the second time, kicks off at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tenn. We're expecting a 4-2-3-1 out of Mauricio Pochettino, who has made nine changes to the starting 11 that lost to Turkey last week. Johnny Cardoso (who was hauled off after a rocky first half in that game) and Max Arfsten are the only holdovers. A whopping five players in this group came up through the Philadelphia Union academy. That includes Brenden and Paxten Aaronson, who will start alongside one another with the USMNT for the first time. Per U.S. Soccer, they become the fourth set of brothers to do so, and the first since George and Louis Nanchoff both started a Feb. 11, 1979 game against the Soviet Union. Liverpool's insane transfer plan BIGGER than Florian Wirtz

Liverpool's transfer plan this summer went bigger than Florian Wirtz. The Reds are close to breaking their transfer record for the German star. Liverpool hope to close a deal for Florian Wirtz before long. The Reds have pushed forward on a club-record transfer with Bayer Leverkusen. Advertisement And that's a shock. Liverpool weren't supposed to be in the running for Wirtz, with Bayern Munich thought to be absolutely certainties to sign him. After all, the Bundesliga champions essentially have a first option on all elite German talent. That's how it seems, at least. But Wirtz chose Liverpool. He rejected Bayern Munich and Manchester City, who wanted a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne. Wonderful news for Liverpool, then, who have surprised everyone with a move of this scale. However, it appears they planned to go even bigger. Florian Wirtz x Rayan Cherki France-based broadcaster Matt Spiro claims Liverpool had a pretty incredible plan. He suggests the Reds tried to sign both Wirtz and Rayan Cherki this summer. Advertisement Certainly, he's not the first to report that Liverpool wanted Cherki. The Athletic claimed last week that Arne Slot flew to France to discuss plans with the French playmaker. Ultimately, Cherki chose Manchester City over the Reds but it appears Liverpool had a grand plan of signing both no.10s for next season. That naturally draws up many more questions: how would they play together? Would the formation change? Who makes way? Who plays where? And we're also disappointed that it won't happen - but not surprised. Wirtz was always the main target over Cherki and the Frenchman would understandably prefer to have more of a starring role at City. Still, we can't help but admire the ambition here. Liverpool tried to make something very special happen and fell just short of it.
