Filmmaker Park Chan-wook to speak at Seoul International Book Fair
Filmmaker Park Chan-wook, renowned for his visually striking and psychologically complex films, will participate in the 2025 Seoul International Book Fair, the annual book fair's organizer announced Wednesday.
Park has often drawn inspiration from literature, adapting several novels into screen productions including the HBO series "The Sympathizer" (2024) and the BBC series "The Little Drummer Girl" (2019).
During his talk on June 20, titled Park Chan-wook's Literary Anchors, Park will discuss elements of novels that captivate him, the process of translating literature into cinema, and the books that have deeply influenced his creative vision, according to SIBF.
The 2025 SIBF, organized by the Korean Publishers Association and held June 18-22 at Coex in Seoul, invites visitors to reflect on the idea of personal refuge in uncertain times under the theme, "The Last Resort." This year's fair will welcome over 530 publishers and literary organizations including 100 overseas publishers from 16 countries.
A diverse lineup of Korean authors will be present, including Kim Ae-ran, Kim Cho-yeop, Kim Ho-yeon, Park Seo-lyeon, Sohn Won-pyung, Jang Ryu-jin, Cho Ye-eun, Cheon Seon-ran and Choi Jin-young.
International Booker-shortlisted author Bora Chung of "Cursed Bunny," will debut her new release, "The Children's House," while Korean American author Kim Ju-hye of "Beasts of a Little Land" will discuss her latest novel, "City of Night Birds."
Actor and publisher Park Jeong-min will also join the lineup, and star chef Choi Kang-rok from "Culinary Class Wars" will unveil his new book.
Taiwan has been selected as this year's Guest of Honor. Featured events will include a conversation between Rex How, writer and publisher at Locus Publishing Company, and picture book artist Lee Suzy. Illustrator Bei Lynn and graphic novel artist Keum Suk Gendry-Kim will also have a book talk.
Tickets are available at a 50 percent early bird discount (6,000 won) until May 27. From May 28 to June 17, a 30 percent discount (8,000 won) will apply. Standard adult admission is 12,000 won.

Park Chan-wook expelled from Writers Guild of America over 2023 strike violations
'Oldboy' director loses access to Hollywood studios, but Venice-bound 'No Other Choice' and future Korean productions unaffected The Writers Guild of America has expelled director Park Chan-wook and writer Don McKellar for continuing work on HBO's "The Sympathizer" during the 2023 writers' strike. The announcement, made public Friday, marks one of the most high-profile disciplinary actions stemming from the 148-day work stoppage. The expulsion carries significant professional consequences for the "Oldboy" director as it encompasses virtually all scripted content produced by Hollywood's major players. Park is now barred from providing writing services on any WGA-covered productions, effectively excluding him from projects at Disney, Warner Bros., Netflix, HBO and other major studios that maintain collective bargaining agreements with the guild. Both Park and McKellar served as co-writers on the seven-episode limited series, which starred Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey Jr. and aired from April to May 2024. Neither appealed their expulsion, according to WGA West leadership. The guild did not specify which exact violations occurred, but confirmed the pair worked on the series during the strike period from May 2 to Sept. 27, 2023. Park's Venice-bound "No Other Choice" won't feel the sting, however. The black comedy — which Park directed and co-wrote with McKellar, Lee Kyoung-mi and Lee Ja-hye — is produced by South Korea's CJ ENM and will hit North American theaters through Neon. CJ ENM operates outside WGA jurisdiction as a foreign production company, while Neon, like fellow indie distributors A24 and Lionsgate, isn't among the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers members targeted during the strike. The South Korean filmmaker can continue working internationally and with non-signatory companies. Several prominent directors, including Quentin Tarantino, have successfully maintained careers outside guild membership. Park's ability to work as a director remains unrestricted, as the WGA governs only writing services. Academy Award eligibility also remains intact, as WGA membership is not required for Oscar consideration. However, Park's path to major US television projects appears effectively doomed. His previous American television work included directing BBC America/AMC's "The Little Drummer Girl" in 2018. The 2023 strike focused on artificial-intelligence protections, streaming residuals and minimum staffing requirements. The guild secured significant gains in its agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in October. The WGA constitution permits expelled members to apply for readmission only through board action, which may include fines and additional conditions, according to the guild's bylaws.

BIFF unveils Asian cinema retrospective for 30th edition
Festival launches third edition of Asian Cinema 100 survey program The Busan International Film Festival announced Friday its special program "Defining Moments of Asian Cinema," featuring retrospective screenings and talks with major Asian filmmakers for its 30th anniversary edition. The program marks the third iteration of the festival's Asian Cinema 100 initiative, first launched in 2015. It follows previous editions surveying the best Asian films (2015) and best Asian films by female directors (2021). Festival organizers selected 119 titles through a survey of 161 film professionals from 34 countries. Ten films from the list will screen during the festival, which runs Sept.17-26 in venues throughout Busan. Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who won this year's Palme d'Or at Cannes for "It Was Just an Accident," will attend with his film "This Is Not a Film" (2011). The documentary was secretly filmed while Panahi was under house arrest and banned from filmmaking by Iranian authorities. It captures his frustration as an artist unable to create. BIFF named Panahi its Asian Filmmaker of the Year in July. He is the first Asian director to win top prizes at all three major European festivals — Cannes, Venice and Berlin. Fellow Iranian filmmaker Marziyeh Meshkiny will present "The Day I Became a Woman," which won BIFF's New Currents Award in 2000. Other participants include Chinese directors Jia Zhang-ke ("Still Life"), Tsai Ming-liang ("Goodbye, Dragon Inn") and Wang Bing ("Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks"). Hong Kong's Johnnie To will present "Election." Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "Drive My Car" will screen alongside "Nobody Knows" by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Actor Yuya Yagira will introduce "Nobody Knows," for which he won Best Actor at Cannes. Korean cinema will be represented by Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy" and Lee Chang-dong's "Burning." The retrospective comes as BIFF introduces its first competitive section after 29 years as a non-competitive event. The new competition focuses exclusively on Asian films, reinforcing the festival's commitment to regional cinema. The festival will present approximately 240 films, up from 224 last year. A commemorative publication featuring all 119 selected films and critical essays will accompany the program, according to organizers.
