Poundland closes down 44 stores across UK including 10 shops shutting TODAY
Major UK high street retailer Poundland has announced dozens of its shops are set to close.
The popular high street saver store said the closure of over 52 of its outlets across the UK is 'sincerely regrettable' but part of 'recovery plans'. A total of 10 site are closing today, with a further 15 on August 17, then 12 on August 24.
Further closures are planned later this month and into September as Poundland continues its restructuring plan. Another 150 stores are at risk of closure and Poundland is expected to reduce to around 700 shops after the company was sold to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1 in June. It comes after reports DWP state pensioners are set to be given 'extra £352' completely free.
Poundland currently runs around 800 stores across the UK and Ireland but stressed Irish shops have not been affected. Poundland said in June it also plans to close its frozen and digital distribution site at Darton, South Yorkshire, later this year and another warehouse at Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026.

Further potential changes proposed by the firm include closing distribution centres, scrapping online sales, providing more women's wear and seasonal ranges, reducing the amount of chilled food and axing frozen food altogether.Darren MacDonald, retail director, said: "It is, of course, sincerely regrettable that our recovery plans include any store closures, but sadly that's necessary if we're to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores. While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains a sizeable one, we entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when one nearby, closes.
'Nevertheless, we look forward to continuing to welcome them to a nearby Poundland. It goes without saying that we will work closely with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles. That work is underway."
Poundland CEO Barry Williams said: 'Although recent trading has been challenging, we have built a turnaround plan with a simplified and more focused Poundland at its heart, as we aim to deliver the amazing value our customers expect.'

Poundland to shut 49 stores across the UK
Poundland is set to shut 49 stores across the UK, with ten closing for good yesterday, it has been revealed. The discount shop chain's owner, Polish firm Pepco Group, sold the struggling business in June to US-based Gordon Brothers for a 'nominal fee' of just £1. The investment firm, which used to own textile brand Laura Ashley, said it would inject up to £80 million into restructuring the company. As part of these efforts, it has said a whopping nearly 70 Poundland stores will close by mid-October - nearly ten per cent of the estimated total network of 800. Three of these 68 ill-fated branches have already shut their doors - and now, the locations of 49 more of them have been confirmed. After the shutters come down on ten of them yesterday, some 15 stores will then close in just a week's time, on August 17, followed by 12 on August 24, and 11 on August 31. The final closure of this group of 49 will then come on September 14, with the shutdown of the branch at the Rivergate Shopping Centre in Irvine, North Ayrshire. After this sweeping move, some 16 more stores will still need to close to reach the total of 68 - but their locations and closing dates are yet to be revealed. The three stores that have already pulled their shutters down for the last time include the branch in Swiss Cottage, north-west London, which closed on April 20. The store in Chiswick, west London, then shut on May 28, followed by the branch in the Southampton West Quay shopping centre on June 9. Poundland's retail director Darren MacDonald said the chain is working towards a still 'sizeable' network of around 650-700 stores in the restructuring. The closure of 68 branches outright will be followed by additional shutdowns when leases expire and are not renewed. But he emphasised: 'It is of course, sincerely regrettable that we're closing a number of stores to allow us to get us back on track. 'We entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when a store nearby closes but we look forward to continuing to welcome them to one of our other locations. On top of the closures, Gordon Brothers' restructuring plans will also involve negotiating rent reductions at certain store locations. For instance, while one Poundland store in Canterbury, Kent, is sadly due to close, the city's other branch, on St George's Street, has reopened. It shut down on July 23, not as part of the list of 68 set to close amid the restructuring, but opened its doors again on August 1 after a new lease agreement was secured. They will also close Poundland's frozen and digital distribution centre in the village of Darton, South Yorkshire, later this year. This will see frozen products removed from stores and much fewer chilled food items. The new owners also plan to shut the chain's distribution centre in the town of Bilston, West Midlands, by early 2026. Other cost-cutting measures include stopping selling products online and expand the chain's womenswear and seasonal collections. But all these additional changes, beyond the 49 store closures, still need to be approved by the High Court later this month. Poundland went under the hammer in March, with its previous owners Pepco putting it on the market after issues with sales. The firm reported a 6.5 per cent drop in the chain's revenue, which sunk to £830million for the six months to March, versus the previous year. Pepco blamed the decline on 'highly challenging trading conditions', with the franchise struggling to make sales in all product categories. Some 18 stores closed in this period.

The bank holiday on Monday, August 25 is not a recognised public holiday in Scotland, however, it will affect most benefit payment dates. Exact dates two Scottish Poundland stores will close down for good
The budget high street firm has confirmed the dates for 49 store closures this year. Poundland has officially set a closing down date for two of its Scottish stores. It comes amidst wave of closures from the retailer following restructuring plans. The budget high street firm has been closing down stores across the UK after it was sold in a £1 deal from original owners Pepco to the Gordon Brothers, the former owners of Laura Ashley. As a result, the discounter is so far set to shutter a total of 49 stores this year, with 15 set to permanently close this Sunday, August 17, with the list including its Perth store. It comes after Poundland previously closed down 10 stores yesterday, August 10, which included its Inverclyde branch that was based in Port Glasgow. Meanwhile, the group has also benchmarked a further 12 to close on August 11, with an additional 11 being set for August 31, although the locations affected are based in England. According to the Sun, the final store to close will be Scotland's Rivergate Shopping Centre store that is based in Irvine, with its closing date set for September 14. It's been reported that the full list of closures is also set to include an additional 16 branches, although the dates and locations have yet to be confirmed. Poundland, founded in 1990 by Dave Dodd and Steven Smith, initially sold single products for just £1, with over 160,000 staff members said to be employed over 825 stores across the UK and Ireland. However, in March this year, Poundland was put up for sale by its Polish owners the Pepco Group due to struggling sales, with the Gordon Brothers taking it over for just £1 as of June.
