Exact dates two Scottish Poundland stores will close down for good

Daily Recorda day ago
The budget high street firm has confirmed the dates for 49 store closures this year.
Poundland has officially set a closing down date for two of its Scottish stores. It comes amidst wave of closures from the retailer following restructuring plans.

The budget high street firm has been closing down stores across the UK after it was sold in a £1 deal from original owners Pepco to the Gordon Brothers, the former owners of Laura Ashley.

As a result, the discounter is so far set to shutter a total of 49 stores this year, with 15 set to permanently close this Sunday, August 17, with the list including its Perth store.

It comes after Poundland previously closed down 10 stores yesterday, August 10, which included its Inverclyde branch that was based in Port Glasgow.
Meanwhile, the group has also benchmarked a further 12 to close on August 11, with an additional 11 being set for August 31, although the locations affected are based in England.

According to the Sun, the final store to close will be Scotland's Rivergate Shopping Centre store that is based in Irvine, with its closing date set for September 14.
It's been reported that the full list of closures is also set to include an additional 16 branches, although the dates and locations have yet to be confirmed.
Darren MacDonald, retail director at Poundland, said: "While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains sizeable, it is of course, sincerely regrettable that we're closing a number of stores to allow us to get us back on track.

"We entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when a store nearby closes, but we look forward to continuing to welcome them to one of our other locations.
"Work is underway to with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles."
Poundland, founded in 1990 by Dave Dodd and Steven Smith, initially sold single products for just £1, with over 160,000 staff members said to be employed over 825 stores across the UK and Ireland.

However, in March this year, Poundland was put up for sale by its Polish owners the Pepco Group due to struggling sales, with the Gordon Brothers taking it over for just £1 as of June.
It's been reported that the new owners have created a major restructuring plan that would see the removal of frozen food from its stores, alongside halting online trading and Poundland Perks scheme.

'Hyperbolic word salad': Row breaks out as Reform UK politician urges Scots council to rule out low emission zone

Councillor Jamie McGuire labelled the schemes in four Scottish cities as "little more than cash cows" in a blistering statement. A row has broken out after a Reform UK politician urged Renfrewshire Council to rule out ever introducing congestion charges or a low emission zone (LEZ). ‌ Councillor Jamie McGuire labelled the schemes as "little more than cash cows" and said the local authority "must have no part in this" in a blistering statement. ‌ But the elected member for Renfrew North and Braehead has been accused of "hyperbolic word salad" on an issue that was settled almost two years ago. ‌ In September 2023, the SNP administration confirmed it was not considering the introduction of an LEZ in Paisley or any other part of Renfrewshire at a full council meeting. Councillor McGuire, who defected from Labour to Nigel Farage's Reform in June, said: "Scotland's four main cities already have LEZs in place and their experience should be a warning. "These schemes have acted as little more than cash cows, generating income for councils while hitting those who can least afford it. ‌ "People on the lowest incomes, who are far more likely to drive older vehicles, have been penalised simply for trying to get to work, take their children to school or care for relatives. "Renfrewshire must have no part in this. A congestion charge or LEZ in our towns would be a hammer blow to local households and businesses. We are a working community that depends on accessible, affordable transport. "Many residents travel across Renfrewshire for work, education, and caring responsibilities, while small enterprises rely heavily on vans and cars to serve customers and move goods. ‌ "Imposing extra charges on them is not just unreasonable, it risks undermining our local economy and making it harder for people to live and work here." He added: "The SNP-led Renfrewshire Council must act now to rule out – clearly, unequivocally and permanently – ever introducing either a congestion charge or a low emission zone in our area. "Residents deserve certainty, not the constant threat of new charges hanging over them." ‌ Councillor Jim Paterson, SNP convener of the planning and climate change policy board, claimed Councillor McGuire was "trying to raise his profile" with the comments. The elected member for Renfrew South and Gallowhill said: "Another day, another fabricated outrage from Councillor McGuire. "The position of the SNP administration and indeed Councillor McGuire on this issue was settled in 2023 when the Conservative group called on the council to rule out establishing any form of LEZ in Paisley and wider Renfrewshire for the duration of this council term. "The SNP position along with a Labour amendment was agreed then by the vast majority of councillors which stated that the council would not consider the introduction of a low emission zone (LEZ/ULEZ) in Paisley or any other parts of Renfrewshire. That position remains unchanged. "Councillor McGuire, like his newfound political hero Nigel Farage, may like to trade in misinformation but to imply that there has been any change to the agreed position of 2023 is just nonsense and to suggest there is a 'constant fear' hanging over residents is just hyperbolic word salad from a councillor desperately trying to raise his profile to secure the top spot in his party's internal list for Holyrood 2026."

SPFL Premiership club's ambitious stadium plans hit by serious blow from traffic chiefs

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DUNDEE'S hopes of moving into a new stadium have been dealt another major blow by traffic chiefs Transport Scotland. Dark Blues owner Tim Keyes and right-hand man John Nelms have been working on a project for a 12,500 seater arena as part of a wider development since 2017. Access has long been the development's main problem, with roads leading off from the busy Kingsway a long-standing issue. Nelms was involved in a war of words with civil servants back in April, with the body hitting back at his claims they were causing delays. At the time, he hit out at the amount of red tape to get projects off the ground saying: "Everybody that's going through the process in Scotland is frustrated, I think. We're not unique in that. 'Everybody I've talked to who is doing other projects, not just within the city but within Scotland, they always talk about how the process is long and arduous. 'We're trying to get things moving along. We're impatient and want things to happen much quicker. 'We are constantly driving, but we have to respect the process and that's what we're doing, to secure the next 100 years for the football club, to do all of these things for the community, to bring another asset to Dundee." Transport Scotland have long argued they haven't been given enough detail to pass the plans as workable. And after being presented with the latest proposal - put forward by Nelms in conjunction with transport advisers Systra - TS have once again booted it out. They said: 'Transport Scotland notes with concern that the submission currently lacks sufficient detail to demonstrate the potential impacts of the proposed development on the trunk road network. Iconic Scottish boss Jim Duffy opens up on nearly signing Paul Gascoigne for DUNDEE, friendship with GIanluca Vialli and arriving at Hibs via helicopter 'Noting the observations set out in this and the previously issued responses, and based on the information provided, Transport Scotland are currently unable to support planning application.' Dark Blue Property Holdings, the company planning to build the stadium Dundee will rent, have ploughed millions into the project already and will now prepare another transport assessment for submission later this month. Dundee City Council is due to hear their application but have yet to fix a date while the access saga rumbles on. Premiership boss considered leaving before takeover

Martindale had a central role at Livi even before taking over as manager in 2020 and has had to deal with a number of off-field issues involving previous owners and finances. Those problems were swept away when American Ford took majority control in May, just before Martindale led his team to promotion back to the William Hill Premiership with a play-off win over Ross County. Ford spoke on Monday about his plans to make Livi a 'disruptive' force in Scottish football and has put his faith in Martindale to lead the football side. 'I'll be honest, when we were sitting on Zoom calls in February, March, whenever it was, my head was 'I need to try and take the club back to the Premiership and maybe look elsewhere for my career',' the Lions manager said. 'And Calvin just came in and kind of rejuvenated me. Also, it rejuvenated the staff, it just gave everyone in the football club a massive lift because the previous years were difficult. 'Taking the club back to the Premiership with the old regime, it wouldn't have been ideal. It would have just been pushing water up a hill again. 'And then Calvin's come in, there's just been a real fresh impetus, everybody, staff, upstairs, downstairs and I think that comes from his enthusiasm, his passion, his desire. 'Before we got back to the Premiership, his words to me, I remember sitting in the hotel room in Ross County and a text message came through and goes, 'look Davie, don't think you have to take the club back to the Premiership. Read more: 'It would be great, but I'm here through the good and the bad times and I'll be here if you're in the Championship'. 'And maybe that helped me make better decisions in the dugout, so it's just been a breath of fresh air to be honest.' Martindale added: 'Once we knew that Calvin was fully on board and it was going to get done, I think I had a better night's sleep than I had for the last two or three years to be honest. 'You've now got an upstairs looking after the upstairs. 'Being able to come into work and be the first-team manager of Livingston Football Club, this is the first time proper I've had that opportunity as a football manager. 'So I'm now fully focused on the football side, where historically I wasn't. Historically I couldn't be, it was just impossible. 'I never wanted a lot of the stuff that fell on my desk, but I got it through default because I was the only one that was here at the football club at that point.' Ford stated that Martindale reminded him of himself with his passion and care for the club. Martindale said: 'I think he sees the resilience. We're robust, we'll fight, we'll kick, we'll scream and we'll claw our way back to the Premiership and that's kind of what we've done. 'Hopefully that's what he's meaning in terms of the personality traits, in terms of the will to win – never give up.'
