Poundland to axe two popular services ahead of latest store closures

It makes up part of a restructuring plan to "simplify and refocus" the struggling company. Poundland shoppers will soon no longer be able to order products online. It comes amidst a restructuring plan to "simplify and refocus" the firm. ‌ Starting from September 16, the discounted high street chain has confirmed in an update that its website will no longer be offering an online delivery service, leaving it available for "browsing only." ‌ While the budget firm only launched its online service in 2022, this move will see the struggling company put the focus back on in-store shopping as it prepares to launch even more £1 ranges and new items. ‌ However, the website won't be disappearing for good, as it will still showcase all the year-round and seasonal ranges on offer in stores, alongside providing local store opening hours. The Poundland Perks app will also be getting retired, although any vouchers that have so far been earned will be valid for redemption in any Poundland store until January 15, 2026. Sharing a statement on the decision to axe the scheme, Poundland said: "This means that we'll focus on having the best prices, for everyone, in all of our stores – no need for an account, data, membership or vouchers. Just amazing value every day." ‌ Launched late last year, the retailer's loyalty scheme allows shoppers to earn 'Perky Points' when they shop in store, allowing them to be turned into a voucher when they hit 5,000 points. The app also offers its members a range of exclusive prices, similar to other schemes on the market, alongside weekly prizes with its "Win it Wednesday" offer. ‌ A spokesperson for Poundland recently told the Daily Record: "We know these changes will disappoint our digital shoppers, they're part of our determination to simplify and refocus our business for customers and colleagues alike. When Poundland is at its best, it's an 'everyday low-price' retailer and we want to make sure all customers can benefit from our low prices without the hassle of looking for a voucher in an app. ‌ "We know our customers love the simplicity of our low prices when they shop with us in store, and these changes will help our plans to strengthen that." News of the two popular online services being axed comes amidst a major restructuring plan for Poundland that has included a wave of store closures across the UK. This has recently affected Scottish shoppers, as the Poundland store based at Port Glasgow's Gallagher Shopping Park permanently closed its doors on Sunday, August 10. Meanwhile, the discounter also recently earmarked a further 25 stores for closure in the coming weeks, with its Perth store set to close on August 17, while the Rivergate Shopping Centre branch based in Irvine will shut up shop on September 14. The closures followed the struggling firm being sold from its original owners Pep & Co to former Laura Ashley owners the Gordon Brothers back in June, with the sale costing just £1.

Poundland, owned by the Pepco Group, was sold for "just £1" in June as part of a deal struck with investment fund Gordon Brothers. The ex-owner of Laura Ashley agreed to buy the discount chain for the nominal fee as it said it would move forward with a major restructuring plan. This included pumping £80million of financing into Poundland. Later that month, Gordon Brothers laid out the details of the restructuring plan, which included closing 68 stores and negotiating rent reductions at a number of other locations. Poundland was put up for auction in March as Pepco, a Polish company, sought to offload the brand. The owner had reported weak Poundland sales over the previous six months and cut the brand's trading guidance for the year as a result. Poundland revenues dropped by 6.5% to £830million for the six months to March compared with a year earlier. The brand suffered "challenges across all categories" and had 18 net store closures over the period. Pepco had blamed "highly challenging trading conditions" for the fall in sales. Exact dates two Scottish Poundland stores will close down for good

The budget high street firm has confirmed the dates for 49 store closures this year. Poundland has officially set a closing down date for two of its Scottish stores. It comes amidst wave of closures from the retailer following restructuring plans. ‌ The budget high street firm has been closing down stores across the UK after it was sold in a £1 deal from original owners Pepco to the Gordon Brothers, the former owners of Laura Ashley. ‌ As a result, the discounter is so far set to shutter a total of 49 stores this year, with 15 set to permanently close this Sunday, August 17, with the list including its Perth store. ‌ It comes after Poundland previously closed down 10 stores yesterday, August 10, which included its Inverclyde branch that was based in Port Glasgow. Meanwhile, the group has also benchmarked a further 12 to close on August 11, with an additional 11 being set for August 31, although the locations affected are based in England. ‌ According to the Sun, the final store to close will be Scotland's Rivergate Shopping Centre store that is based in Irvine, with its closing date set for September 14. It's been reported that the full list of closures is also set to include an additional 16 branches, although the dates and locations have yet to be confirmed. Darren MacDonald, retail director at Poundland, said: "While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains sizeable, it is of course, sincerely regrettable that we're closing a number of stores to allow us to get us back on track. ‌ "We entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when a store nearby closes, but we look forward to continuing to welcome them to one of our other locations. "Work is underway to with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles." Poundland, founded in 1990 by Dave Dodd and Steven Smith, initially sold single products for just £1, with over 160,000 staff members said to be employed over 825 stores across the UK and Ireland. ‌ However, in March this year, Poundland was put up for sale by its Polish owners the Pepco Group due to struggling sales, with the Gordon Brothers taking it over for just £1 as of June. It's been reported that the new owners have created a major restructuring plan that would see the removal of frozen food from its stores, alongside halting online trading and Poundland Perks scheme. Poundland plans to close 68 stores and STOP selling popular range as part of rescue deal to save chain

BIG CHANGES Poundland plans to close 68 stores and STOP selling popular range as part of rescue deal to save chain Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) POUNDLAND has confirmed plans to shut 68 stores, with up to 150 at risk of closure. The struggling discount chain was sold for just £1 last week and it was expected a major shake-up would be needed to rescue it. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Poundland is expected to close 68 of its stores as part of the restructuring plan Credit: Alamy Poundland has now announced a huge series of changes aimed at keeping itself afloat. They include ditching its frozen food items, getting rid of its loyalty scheme app and no longer selling products online. The Poundland Perks rewards app was only launched in October last year. Meanwhile the website had been selling items online since September 2023. Barry Williams, managing director of Poundland, said: "It's no secret that we have much work to do to get Poundland back on track. "While Poundland remains a strong brand, serving 20m-plus shoppers each year, our performance for a significant period has fallen short of our high standards and action is needed to enable the business to return to growth. "It's sincerely regrettable that this plan includes the closure of stores and distribution centres, but it's necessary if we're to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores. "It goes without saying that if our plans are approved, we will do all we can to support colleagues who will be directly affected by the changes." Investment fund Gordon Brothers snapped up the discount chain last week and said it would go ahead with proposed restructuring plans. This is what has been proposed: Closing 68 stores and negotiating rent reductions at a number of other locations Getting rid of frozen food products at all stores where they're currently sold It's now expected the chain will keep around 650 to 700 of its stores across the country.

Major Poundland loyalty scheme change amid closure concerns

It has be predicted that 200 Poundland stores could end up closed as the owner of the discount chain looks for a new buyer. Poundland is known for providing their customers with everyday essentials for low prices. From cleaning products to holiday must-haves, the discount chain is a go-to store for shoppers looking for a bargain. However, with the threat of closure looming, Poundland has now made a major change to their loyalty scheme after listening to customer feedback. The chain will now be scrapping its exclusive lower prices for shoppers who are part of their membership scheme. ‌ Shoppers used to be able to get access to cheaper prices on certain products thanks to Poundland Perks, but this major shake-up means this bonus - which is similar to Tesco Clubcard Prices and Sainsbury's Nectar Prices - will become a thing of the past. ‌ However, the Mirror reports that shoppers will still be able to collect points on the money that they spend while in store. Loyalty scheme members get one point for every 1p they spend on selected items, and once they reach 5,000 points, they will receive a voucher worth £1. A Poundland spokesperson has said: "We've listened to your feedback and from 21 May 2025, the app will now be changing to points and prizes. "That means we'll be offering all customers our very best pricing on the shelf and online – without having to add Poundland Perks prices found in the app. "Of course, you can continue to earn points as you shop at Poundland in store and online when you scan your Poundland Perks app at checkout – and you'll still be able to play our weekly Win it Wednesday competition to win points and prizes. "Once you've accumulated 5,000 points you'll be able to convert those points to a £1 voucher to redeem In-store and online, by turning the toggle on before the 15th of every month." ‌ This shake up to Poundland Perks comes after the owner of the discount chain, Pepco Group, announced that it has decided to sell the chain. Earlier this week in a financial update, the Pepco Group told investors that the company "continues to actively explore separation options for Poundland business with an exit expected by end of FY25". ‌ This means that Poundland expects to make and accept a deal by the end of the current financial year. Therefore by September, the parent company hopes the discount chain will be under new command. While it has been reported that there are investment firms and private equity groups interested in buying the business, the Telegraph has also claimed that up to 200 Poundland stores could potentially face closure. ‌ Currently, Poundland has over 820 across the UK and Ireland - where it is known as Dealz - and it chain employs more than 16,000 people. Despite the massive size of this discount chain, it was revealed this week that the business' revenues have dropped by 6.5 per cent to €985million (£830million) for the six months to March, in comparison to the year before. Over the period, the brand suffered "challenges across all categories" and had 18 net store closures. It is now predicted that Poundland is due to deliver earnings of between 0 and €20million (£16.9 million) compared with previous guidance of €50million and €70million. By contrast, the wider Pepco Group saw total revenues grow by 4.3% to €3.34billion (£2.82billion) in the half-year. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
