Kieran McKenna frustrated at Ipswich's missed chances in draw with Southampton
Sam Szmodics hit the Saints' post while Robinson had a shot deflected by Town goalkeeper Alex Palmer as neither side were able to grab victory in a frantic second half.
McKenna's side are still winless this season but he was pleased to at least avoid defeat against one of the sides who came down from the Premier League with them last term.
McKenna said: 'We had the better chances but we were not quite able enough to say we absolutely dominated the game in any spell and really say we should have really won it.
'We looked like the team more likely to win it but we just need to take steps forward in every aspect to be a better team to be more dominant in the game and find a way to win.
'We have to use that feedback to get stronger and we need to do all the right things as a club and off the pitch to get the group as strong as we can.
'It was frustrating not to get the win but it was in some ways it was a step forward.
'It's our first home game and probably against one of the better teams in the division personnel wise.
'We delivered a better performance and better chances but disappointed we didn't get the winner.'
Southampton boss Will Still said the draw was a fair result after his side displayed 'grit and character'.
'We scored a really good goal and collectively we have used the space and got it in the box,' Still said.
'The first half was the performance we wanted to see.
'In the second half it was a bit more scrappy and not what we expect but you expect that coming to grounds like this, it's difficult.
'They (Ipswich) build the pressure up but we dug in when we had to dig in and that's a positive thing but on the whole the draw was a fair result, we take the point and still keep moving.
'We showed grit and determination and character and got back into the game.
'If you want to be hypercritical we should have been more clinical in both boxes and more demanding from ourselves but it's two games in and we've won in the cup and still unbeaten and take positives from the game.'

That the defender's sale comes at a time when head coach Enzo Maresca has made it clear that he is keen to strengthen his backline following the season-long injury to Levi Colwill should still not come as a surprise. Benoit Badiashile is still on his way back from injury, though Tosin Adarabioyo is fit to feature against West Ham on Friday night, while several other fringe Chelsea stars are set to depart in the next 10 days. Italian coach Maresca had long made up his mind that Veiga was not of the standard required, despite claiming early last season that he valued the now senior Portugal international's versatility when using him further forward in the Europa Conference League But demanding more game time at his favourite position before heading on loan to Juve for the second half of the campaign did not help Veiga's cause either, with those requests leading to a dim view taken behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge. Asked midway through last season, shortly before he went on loan to Juve, if Veiga deserved more game time, Maresca joked: 'I said many times, I also want long hair, but we also have more than 20 players, 25 players, and they all want to play but it's not possible.' He then added that he valued the versatility of Veiga, 22, and stressed that his use in other roles led to a first senior national team call-up. 'We bought Renato from Basel, he arrived here, has played in different positions, played well, and this allowed him to join the national team for the first time in his life, the senior national team,' Maresca added at the time. 'Probably if he is not playing in his position, and also in the international team not playing in his position, it means he can do well, and we are very proud of all of our players who join their international teams but especially in this case, a young player who joins Chelsea, starts to play different positions, four or five different positions, that gives him the chance to join the national team so we are very proud about that. 'I had a chat with Renato and I said exactly the same thing I just say to you in terms of playing in the position he is playing with us gave him the chance to join the international team and also probably gave him the chance to get speculation around him so that means clubs are probably looking at him. 'Clubs are looking for players that are doing well, not that are doing bad. Players that are doing well with the club, with the international team, and as I said, for me, if there is a player who just wants to play in one position, they're going to struggle.' Veiga went on to make a dozen Serie A starts in Turin, earning rave reviews. His sale would take Chelsea's income from sales in this window to beyond £200m.

Wrexham's 'dream' signing still available as Ryan Reynolds urged to blow wage budget
Wrexham are being urged to break their wage structure for a Premier League winner who is available as a free agent, with former boss Dean Saunders firmly backing the bold move Wrexham have been urged to blow their wage budget out of the water to secure the signing of Jamie Vardy. The former England star has been linked with numerous clubs since leaving Leicester City at the end of last season, including Everton, Celtic and Rangers. Serie A champions Napoli are one of the latest teams reported to be considering a move for the 38-year-old striker, who scored 200 goals in 500 games for the Foxes. However, with less than two weeks of the summer transfer window left, Vardy remains unattached. Championship new boys Wrexham were one of the earliest clubs said to be sniffing around him after they were promoted from League One in April. And the Welsh side's former manager Dean Saunders believes they should take the plunge by making an approach for Vardy. The ex- Liverpool and Aston Villa striker said Vardy's wages could be one stumbling block in bringing him to Wrexham. However, with the financial might of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac behind them, Saunders reckons it's a dream signing worth taking a chance on. Speaking to OLBG, he said: "Jamie Vardy, he's 38, but he's still quick. You never lose your eye for a goal, ever. Even now I can't play, but my football brain's still there, I just can't run anymore. Well Vardy can still run and his football brain is still the same. "To score as many goals as he scored, you've got to anticipate before everybody else where the ball's going to go. And he does. So I'd like to see Wrexham sign Jamie Vardy if they could. "Obviously I think his last wages was probably £150,000 a week, so they're about £130,000 short. But you never know at his age, you might just want to be part of it for two years, to get him to 39. I still think he's a good player. I still think he'd do a job in the Championship." Wrexham have hardly been shy about splashing the cash on transfer fees this summer. The Red Dragons have broken their club record on three occasions, with the highest amount paid for Ipswich forward Nathan Broadhead, who joined in a deal reportedly worth up to £10million. One benefit of a possible move for Vardy would be his availability as a free agent, potentially allowing for more to be spent on wages. It would not be the first time Wrexham have tried to pull off a coup during the current window either. The ambitious club previously made an attempt to attract former Manchester United star Christian Eriksen. While they were ultimately unsuccessful, the Danish midfielder's agent Martin Schoots said that Wrexham was a "hugely impressive project." Director Humphrey Ker addressed speculation around the club's alleged interest in Vardy back in May. Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, he insisted at the time that they were not targeting a swoop for the striker. Presenter Moyles asked him if Wrexham had signed Vardy after the question was sent in by a fan of the club. Ker responded without hesitation: "No." Moyles followed up by querying if the club was considering a move for the former England striker, to which Ker repeated: "No." Whether Wrexham decide to make an approach remains to be seen after Vardy's wife, Rebekah Vardy, recently fuelled speculation that he could be heading to the MLS with Inter Miami. She triggered rumours after sharing a snap of their children in the club's kits on social media, but such claims were later shot down, with Vardy's next move still unknown. Motherwell boss 'close' to bringing in new faces, but unlikely to happen ahead of Hearts clash
Jens Berthel Askou says he's looking forward to welcoming new players Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou says he's close to bringing in further signings to bolster his squad, ahead of the transfer window closure. But the Dane says he's unlikely to be able to bring anybody in ahead of Saturday's trip to face Hearts at Tynecastle. Motherwell have moved in the last week or so to bring in striker Callum Hendry on a two-year deal from MK Dons, and forward Esapa Osong on loan from English Premier League side Nottingham Forest. But Askou isn't finished and said: 'There are more things in the pipeline and when we can make it official is up to how fast we can finalise the last bits. 'But we were moving in on things and I look forward to getting the last faces in. '[Bringing somebody in ahead of Saturday is] probably unlikely, because it takes a bit of time and also the paperwork and stuff, but let's see.' Meanwhile, Askou is getting players back, but is likely to lose midfielder Tom Sparrow for at least the next two games. He said: 'We got some players back. Liam Gordon is back in full training, ready to participate. Jordan McGhee is finally back as well in full training. 'Callum Slattery is back from suspension, ready to play. Johnny Koutroumbis won't make it for the weekend, but we'll assess him next week, and he's on the pitch again doing his rehab, so we'll see about next week, which is more likely. 'Tom picked up an injury against St Johnstone, and will most likely not be involved in the next two games.' When asked about longer-term injured players like Sam Nicholson and Zach Robinson, Askou said: 'They're still a bit away from getting back. We try to involve them in the stuff we do, obviously they are around us doing their rehab, and are in all the meetings, and we try to give them extra information here and there. 'Our squad is fantastic in terms of keeping everyone part of all we do, all the fun stuff we do around the pitch. 'They smile every time I see them, even though it's not the most fun part of being a footballer, they're going through right now. 'We're hopeful and optimistic that they will go through the rest of their recovery as well as they can, and we will see them eventually. 'Not next week, but they're following the plan as they should.'
