Bills head athletic trainer Denny Kellington leaves for promotion with Panthers

Yahoo15-02-2025
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Buffalo Bills associate athletic trainer Denny Kellington has moved on from the team. He was hired by the Carolina Panthers this week to serve as the team's vice president of player health and performance.
A promotion was well deserved for Kellington, who was credited with saving the life of safety Damar Hamlin by performing CPR after the Bills safety collapsed on the field in January of 2023.
Kellington was on the Bills' athletic training staff from 2017, starting as an assistant trainer and moving up to associate head trainer in 2023. Before that, he was on Syracuse University's athletic training staff for almost 12 years, serving as head athletic trainer of football for the final six years.
Kellington graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2000, where he returned in 2023 to make a commencement speech just four months after saving the life of Hamlin on national TV for the world to see.
"All the attention I've received for simply doing my job has been overwhelming," Kellington said in his speech. "I've said repeatedly that I am not a hero, but I will tell you what I was that day, I was ready.'
Because Kellington was ready on that particular night, Hamlin not only survived but he put together the best season of his career in 2024, starting 14 games and recording his first two career interceptions.
The remarkable story of Hamlin doesn't exist without Kellington. In 2023 Kellington received a vote for NFL MVP from the Associated Press, and he was among a crew of Bills training staff who were presented the Pat Tillman Award at the 2023 ESPYs from an emotional Hamlin.
The Panthers hired not only a well-experienced professional in his field, but also a life-saver who proved his worth on the world's biggest stage under the most possible pressure.
'When unexpected doors open, or life changes course, trust that your experiences have led you there and you will be ready,' Kellington said in his commencement speech at OSU. "Understand this: small things done with passion and intention have the potential to make a lasting impact with ripple effects that you may never understand.'

Bears-Bills preseason game drew 5.1 million viewers

It wasn't a competitive game even by preseason standards, but Sunday's Bears-Bills game still drew an impressive audience. Fox announced that 5.1 million viewers watched the Bears' 38-0 blowout win, which Josh Allen and the rest of the Bills' starters watched from the sideline. That's Fox's biggest preseason audience in five years and an 11 percent increase from Fox's audience for the comparable preseason game last year. The big audience is a sign that, even as the Bills and many other teams increasingly keep their starters on the bench in the preseason, Americans are hungry enough for football that they'll watch any NFL game.

Bears vs. Bills preseason matchup earns record TV ratings

Love him or hate him, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams certainly can draw a crowd. That was evident on Sunday night when the Bears welcomed the Buffalo Bills to town for a prime-time preseason matchup. The Bears easily defeated the Bills 38-0 in their first preseason shutout since 1994, but all eyes were tuned in to FOX to see what Williams would do in his first game under new head coach Ben Johnson. According to FOX Sports PR, Sunday night's game drew in 5.1 million viewers. It was the most-viewed preseason game since 2021, when they broadcasted the Hall of Fame game, the first preseason game in nearly two years due to COVID-19. Viewership was up 11% compared to last year's standalone preseason game between the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. Even with the Bills sitting reigning MVP Josh Allen and the vast majority of their starters, this game was appointment viewing, with so many people curious as to how Williams would look in his first preseason action. The second-year quarterback delivered with an impressive outing, going 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown during the first quarter. TTime will tell whether Williams and the starters will see action on Friday night in their preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. If this was it for Williams in the preseason, though, he made sure to shine in front of a large audience on national television.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow sets ‘close to perfect' bar for himself in 2025

The post Bengals QB Joe Burrow sets 'close to perfect' bar for himself in 2025 appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Cincinnati Bengals are hoping that this season is the year they will be able to break their two-year playoff drought and get back to Super Bowl contention in the AFC. In 2024, the Bengals saw a career year out of Joe Burrow, but the team's defense took a major step back, causing Cincinnati to miss the playoffs for a second straight season. Recently, Burrow sat down with NFL Network's Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network to set a lofty goal for himself for the upcoming 2025 season. 'For myself, I expect to be close to perfect. I think I'm at that level at this point,' said Burrow, per Tom Pelissero on X, formerly Twitter. It's certainly within the realm of possibility for Burrow, who has quickly established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league during his young NFL career, but is looking to help his team bounce back after a rough couple of seasons. Can the Bengals compete? A large part of the reason that the Bengals have struggled over the last couple of seasons is the team's propensity to get off to poor starts early on. This continued once again last year, when Burrow and the Bengals inexplicably dropped a home game to the lowly New England Patriots to open up the season in what was arguably Burrow's worst game of the campaign. Putting yourself behind the eight ball year after year is certainly not a recipe for success at the NFL level, and the Bengals will hope to avoid giving themselves another early hole to dig out of this year. Thankfully, the Bengals have what should be an easy opponent to open up the season this year in the Cleveland Browns, albeit on the road. Burrow and his teammates are surely aware of the pressure that will be on them in that game to set the tone for the season early and get off to a good start in 2025. In any case, the Bengals and Browns are set to hit the field on September 7 at 1:00 PM ET from Cleveland.
