Dodgers 3B Max Muncy (oblique) returns to IL
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team believes the injury will not end the 34-year-old Muncy's season, but he missed three months with a Grade 1 oblique strain midway through the 2024 season.
Muncy made the most of his eight healthy games this month as he racked up four home runs, nine RBIs and nine walks while fashioning a .348/.531/.870 slash line. That pushed his season numbers to a .258 average with 17 homers and 64 RBIs in 89 games.
His .880 OPS ranks as his best showing since he forged a .249/.368/.527 slash line in 2021, which earned Muncy his second National League All-Star team nod as well as 10th place in NL Most Valuable Player voting.
To fill Muncy's spot on the active roster, the Dodgers picked up utility infielder Buddy Kennedy off waivers from Toronto. Rookie Alex Freeland, who has batted .176 with no extra base hits in 12 games since making his MLB debut on July 30, is expected to be the regular third baseman.

Three homers send Royals past Rangers for 5th straight win
August 20 - Bobby Witt Jr. clubbed his 100th career homer, Vinnie Pasquantino and Mike Yastrzemski also went deep, and the Kansas City Royals won their fifth straight game, beating the visiting Texas Rangers 5-2 on Tuesday. Pasquantino and Yastrzemski each homered in a second consecutive contest for the Royals, who have taken the first two contests in the current three-game series and are 7-1 on their 10-game homestand. Kansas City improved to 5-0 vs. Texas this season. After the Royals snapped a 2-2 tie when Jonathan India was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the seventh, Witt broke the game open with a two-run homer, well over the center field fence off Cole Winn, an inning later. At 25 years, 66 days old, Witt is the youngest Royal to reach 100 homers. He became the fourth player ever with at least 100 home runs and 100 steals in his first four major league seasons, joining Bobby Bonds, Darryl Strawberry and Julio Rodriguez. Kansas City starter Seth Lugo yielded only two runs, on solo homers to Corey Seager and Joc Pederson, in 6 1/3 innings. He permitted three hits and two walks while striking out five. Lugo dueled with Texas' Merrill Kelly, whose only hits allowed in six innings were two homers. He fanned three without issuing a walk. Losers in 10 of 12, the Rangers managed just four hits on the night. With two outs and nobody on in the first inning, Seager cleared the wall just to the right of center field. However, Pasquantino delivered his own two-out homer over the right-center-field wall in the bottom of the frame. Texas went back ahead in the fourth when Pederson turned on a Lugo pitch and sent it well into the right field seats. Two innings later, Yastrzemski went deep to right field with two outs, tying the game again. Kansas City took the lead in the seventh when Pasquantino doubled off Hoby Milner (1-3) and made it to third on back-to-back infield singles from Maikel Garcia and Randal Grichuk. Winn took over on the mound and plunked India to bring home the tiebreaking run. Winn then fanned John Rave and got Kyle Isbel bounced into an inning-ending 3-2-3 double play. Kansas City's Angel Zerpa (4-1) threw 1 1/3 innings in relief, and John Schreiber handled the ninth inning for his first save of the year. --Field Level Media

After pitcher's duel, Tigers top Astros with bases-loaded walk in 10th
August 20 - Gleyber Torres walked with the bases loaded in the 10th inning as the host Detroit Tigers edged the slumping Houston Astros 1-0 on Tuesday night. With two outs, Torres took a 3-2 pitch from Kaleb Ort (2-2), who issued two other walks (one intentional) in the inning. Ghost runner Wenceel Perez scored the lone run. The game featured a pitcher's duel between American League All-Stars Hunter Brown and Tarik Skubal. Houston's Brown gave up five hits and struck out six in six innings, while Skubal limited the Astros to three hits and fanned 10 in seven innings. Will Vest (6-2) pitched the last two innings to pick up the win. Houston was shut out for the fourth time in five games and hasn't scored a run in 28 innings. Detroit had two baserunners on with two out in the first, as Torres singled and Riley Greene drew a walk. Spencer Torkelson then grounded out. Both starters recorded two strikeouts in the second. Skubal also got some help from center fielder Perez, who caught Christian Walker's fly ball at the wall. In the third, Houston's Chas McCormick drew a two-out walk and Jeremy Pena singled. Skubal then struck out Carlos Correa. The Tigers had runners at the corners in the bottom of the third on singles by Trey Sweeney and Torres, but Kerry Carpenter lined into an inning-ending double play. Houston nearly ended its scoring drought in the fourth. Yainer Diaz had a two-out single and tried to score on Ramon Urias' double. Diaz was called out at home and the Astros challenged it but, after a lengthy review, it was confirmed. Skubal struck out the side in the fifth, then Detroit had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Zach McKinstry led off with a triple. He held at third on Dillon Dingler's grounder before Sweeney struck out. Brown walked Colt Keith, then retired Torres on a fly ball. Skubal finished his stellar outing with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh. Houston was unable to advance the ghost runner in the 10th against Vest, who allowed one hit and struck out one in his two innings. --Field Level Media

Braves erase 6-run deficit to slay White Sox
August 20 - Drake Baldwin delivered a two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning as the Atlanta Braves rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the visiting Chicago White Sox 11-10 on Tuesday. Atlanta scored five runs in the seventh to pull within 10-9 before capping the rally on Baldwin's bases-loaded single to right. Michael Harris II and Jurickson Profar each delivered a two-run homer to stay hot for Atlanta, which has won five of its last six games. Harris extended his hitting streak to 12 games and gave the Braves a first-inning lead with his second homer in as many games, a two-run shot against Shane Smith. Chicago moved ahead with three runs in the third against Bryce Elder when Edgar Quero scored on Mike Tauchman's groundout and Teel doubled in two runs. The Braves regained the lead on Profar's two-run shot in the fourth. The 437-foot blast was Profar's 10th homer of the season and fourth in his last three games. Smith pitched six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Chicago knocked Elder out of the game in the fifth while scoring five runs on five hits. After Miguel Vargas and Lenyn Sosa each singled in a run, Andrew Benintendi walked to load the bases before Luis Robert Jr. doubled in two to make it 8-4. Elder gave up eight runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three. --Field Level Media
