Ditcheva outclasses Inaba despite hand injury

BBC News19-07-2025
Dakota Ditcheva shrugged off an injured hand as she outclassed Sumiko Inaba to win by unanimous decision at the PFL Champions Series in South Africa. The Manchester fighter never looked in danger as she pummelled Inaba throughout, before easing off in the final round after telling her corner "I've broken my hand".Inaba couldn't capitalise as Ditcheva cruised to the final bell, using kicks to keep the American at bay as she extended the unbeaten start to her career to 15."I think I injured my left hand. I think I'm gutted because I've been out for so long and then I'm injured again, but I hope you guys enjoyed it," said a teary Ditcheva. The bout was the 26-year-old's first in eight months after becoming the first British woman to win an MMA world title in November.Ditcheva had voiced her frustrations pre-fight at the eight-month lay-off but confirmed after beating Inaba she has signed a new deal with the PFL."I have just re-signed with PFL, we've come to a great agreement and I'm gonna look forward to the next few years together in front of crowds like this. You guys really set a standard," she revealed. The fight card was also the first major MMA event to take place in Africa and Ditcheva paid tribute to the crowd, adding "that was the best walkout I've ever had, thank you so much".
Ditcheva had been vocal about her time away from the cage in the build-up to the bout, blaming a lack of credible opponents for the delay. She cruised through the PFL flyweight tournament last year with four straight stoppages and, with many of her opponents fighting in this year's competition, saw little value in entering it again. She was eventually paired up with Inaba based on the 34-year-old winning eight of her nine professional bouts, while Ditcheva added "there is no denying her skill level".Although Inaba showed courage and admirable durability throughout, the Briton remained a class above.Inaba started by pushing forward but it didn't take long for Ditcheva to initiate the clinch and take control - as she would throughout the fight - to land a number of damaging knees. She stunned Inaba in the second round with an elbow and flurry of strikes, but Inaba showed grit to take the flyweight champion to the third round for the first time in six bouts.
With the crowd chanting her name, Ditcheva landed more crunching knees from the clinch before adopting a more careful approach after injuring her hand after a punch. Inaba was already too worn down to take advantage, however, as her opponent used kicks to maintain distance before showboating and cupping her ears to the crowd in victory. In the main event, Spain's Costello van Steenis beat American Johnny Eblen to win the PFL middleweight title in a remarkable finish. With Eblen seemingly heading towards a decision victory, Van Steenis secured a rear-naked choke, forcing the submission with just nine seconds of the bout remaining.

UFC fight descends into bloodbath as both fighters are left unrecognizable in Las Vegas

UFC stars Chris Duncan and Mateusz Rebecki were left unrecognizable after their co-main event descended into a bloodbath on Saturday night. The lightweight stars faced off at UFC Vegas 108 and made sure to give fight fans their money's worth as they viciously battled throughout their three-round bout. Heading into the fight, Scottish star Duncan was the bookie's underdog but you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise given Rebecki's state by the end of the fight. The Polish fighter was left disfigured, bloody and bruised after being on the receiving end of a striking clinic from his Scottish counterpart. It was enough to earn Duncan a unanimous decision victory, however, some would argue that the Scottish star hardly 'won' given the brutal damage he also suffered. The 32-year-old had nasty cuts across his face - including one deep gash right below his left eye that appeared to cause him some concern during the fight. However, in the end, Duncan battled through and it was Rebecki who wore the scars of defeat upon his face come the final bell. Notably, Rebecki's right eye had become incredibly swollen throughout the fight and the Polish star was hardly able to see out of it by the final round. The judges scored it 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 in Duncan's favor, which saw him extend his professional MMA record to 14-2 - in one of the biggest upsets of the night. The bout was so thrilling that it caught the attention of a number of prominent names within the UFC. Recently retired star Dustin Poirier wrote: 'Bravo men!! What a WAR!! You both should be proud'. Though it may be hard to believe, prior to their fight in Vegas, Duncan and Rebecki were teammates and both trained with American Top Team. Speaking ahead of the bout, Rebecki revealed: 'For me, it's difficult. We live together. He lived behind my wall. It's a funny situation because nobody in the world has that situation. 'You have teammate and an opponent in a place where you live. It's hard for your mind, but you can be better because you see how he trained. 'If you rest, your opponent go to training. When I see he go training and running, I want to do more. A couple minutes more running or go earlier to sleep. 'Do more than him. It's motivation. Stressful of course, but I didn't want to fight with him because he is my teammate.' In the end, it wasn't meant to be for Rebecki on the night and the pre-fight favorite picked up another loss - moving his record to 20-3. The gruesome scenes comes just a week after one fighter was left with gruesome injuries at UFC Abu Dhabi. UFC fighter Mohammad Yahya suffered a horrifying eye injury which saw it swell up to the size of a tennis ball after a brutal beatdown from Steven Nguyen. The 32-year-old knocked down his rival six times, smashing the record for total number of knockdowns in a single fight in the championship's history. The previous record of five was shared by Jeremy Stephens (who defeated Gilbert Melendez in 2017) and Forrest Petz (who defeated Sammy Morgan in 2006).

Ex-Premier League ace signs deal for I'm A Celeb All Stars 11 years after being first star kicked off show

FORMER Premier League ace Jimmy Bullard is to appear on I'm A Celebrity All Stars. The ex-Fulham midfielder, 46, who later hosted Sky's Soccer AM, has negotiated a deal to take part in the Ant and Dec-hosted ITV series. 1 It comes after the Sun on Sunday previously revealed Harry Redknapp, former West Ham manager, where Bullard played in the youth team, has also signed up. Jimmy, famous for his catchphrase 'Football's always the winner', originally took part in I'm A Celeb back in 2014 and had a lads' 'bromance' with eventual winner Racing superbike champ Carl Fogarty, 60. A source said: 'Jimmy had a brilliant time in the original series he took part in and it really opened the door to his broadcasting career. 'He was voted off first last time and he felt he had a lot more to give. "Now he's got the chance to get stuck in again, although he's a bit older so he is worried he might find it harder to rough it. 'His banter is still on top form though. Producers are hopeful he'll have a bromance with Harry Redknapp, who is also taking part.' All Stars will be filmed this autumn in South Africa and be screened in the New Year - after the main version of the I'm A Celebrity show in Australia goes out in November and December. Other celebs taking part in the All Stars version include Strictly love rat Seann Walsh, 39, and Towie star Gemma Collins, 44, who lasted only three days in 2014. All Stars last aired in 2023 when singer Myleene Klass won and it was filmed in South Africa's Kruger National Park. ITV declined to comment.
