OFFICIAL: Orlando Pirates say goodbye to midfield star

Orlando Pirates are starting to clear surplus playing personnel from their squad. Here's the latest on a breaking departure.
Orlando Pirates have taken to X to say farewell to former Gallants midfielder Miguel Timm. The 33-year-old has become a bit-part player in the Bucs engine room. Thalente Mbatha and Makhehlene Makhaula are the preferred duo, while even attacking midfielder Kabelo Dlamini has been used in a more withdrawn role ahead of Timm.
Meanwhile, Innocent Maela got a rare start as Pirates drew 1-1 with Magesi in their final Betway Premiership clash of the campaign. It was Maela's swansong appearance after which he got a standing ovation and sendoff by the home fans. Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring for the Buccaneers in the 7th minute, and Zimbabwean veteran Edmore Chirambare equalised for the visitors on 32 minutes.

Pirates to recruit former Real Madrid opposition analyst?
Thabiso Sesane started the campaign in domineering form, becoming a pillar in the heart of their defence. It was, therefore, a massive blow to the club and player when he was cruelly struck down with a serious tendon injury in February. The rupture was deemed bad enough for the 24-year-old to undergo surgery. Full recovery could take anywhere between four and six months. If Sesane's rehabilitation goes well, he could be back in time for the start of the 2025-2026 season. Orlando Pirates fans are expectant on Soweto Derby Day. Image: BackpagePix

Chaos, crisis and close calls: The bottom four had it all

Magesi FC won the Carling Knockout by beating Mamelodi Sundowns in Bloemfontein in November. Meanwhile, they finished the Betway Premiership in 13th Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix As the curtain falls on the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season, the spotlight shifts from the title chase to the turmoil at the bottom of the table. In the first part of our season review we look at four clubs faced humiliation, heartbreak and hard lessons in survival — or in Royal AM's case, expulsion. From chaotic boardrooms to sacked managers and historic cup wins, here's how it all fell apart at the bottom of the Betway Premiership Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ 16th | ROYAL AM Royally messed up the standing of the league Royal AM were a disgrace to top-flight football. Their season was marred by administrative ineptitude, culminating in their expulsion — and leaving the PSL with egg on their face. What should have been a sporting story turned into a legal circus, largely due to club president Shauwn Mkhize's failure to meet her duties as a law-abiding citizen. This opened the door for SARS to pursue liquidation proceedings. The PSL's delayed response only worsened matters. Royal AM had consistently shown disregard for the league's statutes, governance, and ethics. Their mere participation this season disrupted fixtures and undermined the league's integrity. The good and the bad: Nothing good came from their campaign. Their chaotic involvement brought disrepute to the league and compromised the PSL's obligation to complete the season with 16 teams. Star player: None | Young Turk (U23 player): None | Player on the transfer radar: Siphiwe Cele What's to come: Thankfully, nothing. Admin scrolled a little bit too far 🥹🏆 Guess we've always been a team that never says die#iamCityFC — Cape Town City FC (@CapeTownCityFC) May 31, 2025 15th | CAPE TOWN CITY Up and down, and not a lot to show for it The Citizens were inconsistent throughout the campaign and must now battle Orbit College and Casric Stars in the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs. Two coaching changes didn't help. Eric Tinkler was dismissed after a string of poor results, and his replacement, Muhsin Ertugral, initially sparked hope by defeating both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs 1-0. However, the revival was short-lived, and results plummeted again, leading to Ertugral's departure as well. The good and the bad: Ertugral's brief spell included those memorable wins over the Soweto giants. But a 13-match winless run severely damaged their season. Though they picked up four points in their last two matches, a 15th-place finish is a fair reflection of their campaign. Star player: Thulani Serero | Young Turk: Jaedin Rhodes | Player on the transfer radar: Darwin Gonzalez What's to come: Their recent points haul provides hope. They possess enough quality to see off Casric Stars and Orbit College and secure their PSL status. To every supporter who stood by us, thank you! Your loyalty, patience, and belief meant everything this season. We see you. We appreciate you, Matsatsantsa. 💙#MatsatsantsaUnified #ForTheBadge — SuperSport United FC (@SuperSportFC) May 29, 2025 14th | SUPERSPORT UNITED That's the way the cookie crumbles SuperSport United clung to their top-flight status by a thread, finishing just one place above the play-off zone. This was unfamiliar territory for a side known for regular Top 8 finishes. But years of financial difficulties finally caught up with them, as even former head coach Gavin Hunt admitted it was hard to run a tight ship without resources. Amidst speculation of a sale and name change, the team suffered on the pitch. The sacking of Hunt — a man who had just marked his 1 000th league game as coach — was a brutal end to a season already laden with distress. The good and the bad: There was a glimmer of pride as players Neo Rapoo, Thato Sibiya, Thabang Mahlangu and Lazola Maku helped Amajita win the Under-20 Afcon. But domestically, it was all downhill. Star player: Siphesihle Ndlovu | Young Turk: Neo Rapoo | Player on the transfer radar: Ime Okon What's to come: Uncertain. A potential sale and rebranding as Bloemfontein Celtic looms.

Hugo Broos' backup brigade: five players who must impress in Bafana Bafana friendlies

BAFANA Bafana coach Hugo Broos will be looking to expand his player pool in the upcoming two friendlies. | BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix Bafana Bafana have been on an upward trend and will be eager to maintain their impressive form when they face Mozambique and Tanzania in two upcoming international friendlies. The first match kicks off this Wednesday against Mozambique at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium (3pm kick-off). Coach Hugo Broos will be without several key players, particularly those from Mamelodi Sundowns, who are preparing for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which begins in under two weeks. This presents Broos with an ideal chance to test the depth of his squad and provide fringe players an opportunity to stake a claim. Here's a look at five players who need to make a strong impression: Sipho Chaine Orlando Pirate's Sipho Chaine celebrates his team's third goal during their league game against Kaizer Chiefs in March ORLANDO Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine is one player who has put up his hand with the absence of Ronwen Williams at Bafana Bafana. | AFP Image: AFP The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has been biding his time behind Ronwen Williams, who is firmly established as the national team's first-choice keeper. With Williams unavailable, Chaine now has the chance to impress Broos and possibly challenge for the number one spot. The 28-year-old has shown steady improvement under Jose Riveiro and played a key role in Pirates' recent successes. Now, with a rare opportunity at the international level, Chaine must deliver standout performances in these friendlies to put real pressure on Williams. Mbekezeli Mbokazi One to keep an eye on Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has received his maiden call-up to the national team by Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix At just 19, Mbokazi has captured the attention of the South African football world after being promoted from the reserve team to the Buccaneers' senior squad, where he hardly put a foot wrong in the few appearances he made for the Sea Robbers last season. Touted as a future star, Mbokazi has already featured in high-stakes matches and could be in line for his international debut. Should he get a run, these friendlies will test whether he can replicate his club form on the international stage. Oswin Appollis Oswin Appollis of Polokwane City. Image: Backpagepix It hasn't been the smoothest season for the versatile midfielder, whose Polokwane City side just secured a top-eight finish on the final day of the campaign with a goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs. However, Broos has previously shown faith in players who may be out of form, helping them rediscover their best. Appollis will be hoping for similar support as he aims to return to top shape and prove his worth in the national setup. Patrick Maswanganyi Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi. With uncertainty surrounding Themba Zwane's future at Sundowns, Maswanganyi now has a golden chance to make the attacking midfield position his own, especially with vital World Cup qualifiers on the horizon.
